The footage is notable for showing the moment beneath the surface: white shark expert Gregory Skomal said it was the first underwater video of shark depredation he had seen.
What the footage shows
Skerry’s video captures the shark emerging from murky water, rising from below and taking the fish from the side. The action happened in less than a second, he said. National Geographic’s October 1, 2026 report describes the fish as hooked; it does not identify the fish species or give a precise offshore location.
Skerry worked with local charter captains and spent several days trying to record the behavior, using real-time reports about where fish were being taken. His stated aim was to help people understand the region’s recovering large-predator population: “My goal was to help people understand that this place, Cape Cod and the Gulf of Maine, has a healthy, recovering population of large predatory sharks, particularly great whites.”
What shark depredation means
Depredation is when a predator removes or damages a fish while it is being captured or harvested. Anglers may notice it as bite-shaped pieces missing from a fish or return with only its head. The behavior is often observed from above the water, if it is seen at all; Skerry’s footage gives an underwater view of one such event.

How narrow is the “first-ever” claim?
The footage should not be described as the first time a shark has taken a hooked fish, the first instance of depredation, or the first footage of a shark feeding on a line. The specific novelty claim is narrower: Skomal, a senior marine fisheries scientist at Massachusetts Marine Fisheries and a white shark expert who reviewed the video, said it was the first video he had seen showing depredation from underwater. National Geographic presents the footage as the first such underwater record reported by the publication.
Why Cape Cod fishermen are seeing the behavior
National Geographic places the encounter in the context of a rebound in great white sharks in the western North Atlantic over roughly the past 20 years, particularly around Massachusetts. The report points to protected gray seals as an attraction for sharks, but neither that broader context nor the footage establishes why this particular shark took this fish.

- Gray seals: NOAA Fisheries estimates cited by National Geographic put the regional gray seal population at 30,000 to 50,000. This is an estimate, not an exact current count.
- Shark visits: A 2023 study estimated that about 800 great whites visited Cape Cod waters between 2015 and 2018, as reported by National Geographic. That figure describes the study period, not the current population.
- Captain observations: Charter captain Hap Farrell reported at least 50 depredation instances during the previous summer. This was his observation, not a systematic official count. Farrell said, “There have been more and more sharks hitting fish. What we come back with is just the head, and the sharks will come right up to the boat, within four or five feet, chasing what’s left.”
What is known about effects on fishing
Fishermen in the report describe lost catch and damaged gear and express concern about their businesses. National Geographic says official figures for the local economic effect are unavailable, so these reports should not be treated as a measured estimate of regional losses.
The report also notes an April study finding that shark depredation has affected anglers and fishermen in U.S. Atlantic waters for more than a century. That historical finding does not establish a quantified local time series for the current Cape Cod pattern.

What NOAA plans to do
According to National Geographic, NOAA intends to tag sharks in areas at high risk of depredation, monitor their activity and test deterrents. These are planned research and monitoring efforts, not evidence of a proven solution for anglers. Skomal cautioned about the challenge: “There is certainly no silver bullet.”

The recording documents a shark taking a fish underwater; it does not show a shark approaching or threatening a person. National Geographic notes that the chance of a shark attack remains low and references a fatal Massachusetts attack in 2018. The footage alone is not a basis for drawing broader conclusions about the safety of a particular beach or fishing trip.
