In his October 29, 2024 interview on NPR’s Fresh Air, Alex described a family story that begins with immigration and childhood, follows the brothers into music and the formation of Van Halen, and grows out of the grief left by Eddie’s death from cancer in 2020.
What Alex Van Halen said about Eddie
Alex presents Eddie first as his brother, not simply as a guitar hero. The book’s official description calls it “a love letter to his younger brother, Edward,” a phrase that captures its perspective: this is a firsthand family memoir rather than a neutral biography of the band.
Alex told Fresh Air host Tonya Mosley that “We left a lot unfinished.” The line explains both the book’s emotional urgency and its limits. He is preserving memories after Eddie’s death while acknowledging that no memoir can resolve everything between two people who shared a lifetime.
Grief is the book’s starting point
Eddie died of cancer in 2020. Alex wrote Brothers in the aftermath, using the memoir to work through loss and to preserve the shared history that existed before the fame. The interview therefore reads less like a conventional promotional account of a rock career and more like an elder brother remembering the person behind the public legend.

Where the memoir begins
From the Netherlands to the United States
The narrative starts with the brothers’ arrival in the United States from the Netherlands. Their parents and the experience of building a life in a new country are part of the foundation, rather than background details added after the band story.
Their father’s musical influence
Alex discusses their Dutch father, a jazz musician, and the musical environment in which both brothers grew up. That family influence helps explain why the memoir treats music as a shared language before it treats it as a route to celebrity.

How the Van Halen story enters the book
The interview follows the brothers into the band’s formative period. Alex describes Eddie’s development as a guitar player and the partnership that became Van Halen in 1974 with David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony.

David Lee Roth and “Beat It”
Alex also discusses David Lee Roth’s role and Eddie’s famous guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.” These subjects connect family memories to the moments when Eddie’s playing reached audiences far beyond Van Halen.
Does Brothers cover Van Halen’s entire career?
No. Available interview coverage describes a deliberately bounded narrative centered on the brothers’ early life and the first era of Van Halen. It is not presented as a complete account of every later lineup, album, tour, or internal dispute. Readers seeking a full band chronology should treat Brothers as Alex’s personal account of the formative years, and check the specific edition for its exact endpoint.

That narrow scope is part of the book’s purpose. Alex is writing about a relationship and a family history, not attempting to document every event in Van Halen’s subsequent career from an outside historian’s position.
