How to Run a 24/7 Candle or Fireplace Stream With a Black Screen

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a long YouTube candle or fireplace ambience stream with the screen black and audio playing, but YouTube’s official guidance does not prescribe a specific black-screen OBS setup or endorse that format. You need a livestream-enabled channel, rights to both the sound and any visuals you use, an encoder sending a stable feed, and a plan for monitoring and preserving any replay. For a truly continuous broadcast, also account for what happens if your computer, connection, or stream fails.

What a black-screen fireplace stream involves

A black-screen ambience broadcast sends video and audio to YouTube while showing a black image rather than a visible fireplace. You might choose that presentation for a dark room, to reduce visual distraction, or to focus on the sound. The stream still needs a video signal as well as audio; do not assume that YouTube or your encoder will automatically turn an audio-only source into the black-screen presentation you want.

YouTube’s published encoder instructions cover connecting an encoder, selecting stream settings, and checking stream health. They do not document the exact OBS scene or audio-routing steps for this particular setup, and they do not make a policy determination about it. Configure and test your own scene, verify that both the black image and intended audio reach the preview, and describe the broadcast accurately rather than using the black screen to mislead viewers.

Before you go live

Check channel eligibility and activation

Your channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says first-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the night you want to broadcast. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Clear rights to the audio and video

Use a recording you own or have permission to broadcast. Clear rights separately for the fireplace visuals and for music, crackling, or other sounds; a license for a clip should expressly cover livestreaming or broadcast use. Material being available online does not make it safe to rebroadcast.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve rights issues before you depend on a long broadcast.

Set up and test the stream

  1. Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule an encoder-based livestream. In the stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: it directs the encoder’s feed to your broadcast and lets YouTube accept it. Do not share it publicly. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the workflow.
  2. Build the black-screen scene and audio path. In your encoder, arrange a black video source and the authorized fireplace audio source. Confirm that the audio is routed to the stream and is audible at an appropriate level, while the video output remains black. These are practical configuration steps, not an OBS recipe specified by YouTube. Check the encoder’s own audio meters and preview the incoming feed in YouTube Studio.
  3. Choose an encoder profile your connection can sustain. YouTube’s current settings guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p60. These are platform ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that your computer or internet connection can sustain them. For a black image, a higher frame rate or resolution may not add visible detail; choose a profile that fits your actual output and available upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
  4. Preview before starting the public broadcast. Verify that the preview is black, the fireplace sound is present and clean, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. Confirm that the title and description accurately explain what viewers will hear and see. Do not rely on an untested scene or audio route for an overnight stream.
  5. Leave upload headroom and monitor health. YouTube’s networking advice recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. Other people and devices using the same connection, as well as brief network interruptions, can reduce available upload capacity. Test at the intended bitrate and monitor Live Control Room stream health and status messages while the broadcast runs. See encoder settings guidance and YouTube streaming tips.

Can you leave it running overnight or all day?

Yes, if the channel, encoder, power, and internet connection keep the broadcast online. An overnight test is a sensible first step before committing to a longer session. A local-computer setup depends on that computer and its network remaining available; sleep settings, restarts, power loss, or a connection drop can stop the feed. Check stream health during the run rather than assuming that a broadcast which started successfully will remain uninterrupted.

If you need an uninterrupted presence, distinguish “the stream is live” from “a complete replay will be saved.” YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, record locally as a backup and/or plan separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours. Verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on a particular transition between sessions. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance.

Local encoder or cloud-hosted stream?

A local encoder gives you direct control over the scene and can make local recording straightforward, but the computer and home connection must remain available. A hosted service can keep an uploaded recording streaming from the cloud without leaving your computer on; compare source and audio support, recovery behavior, monitoring, service terms, and whether you can keep a local backup before choosing one. Do not assume any service guarantees a complete YouTube archive or uninterrupted uptime.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. That can suit a rights-cleared fireplace recording when you do not want a computer or home connection to stay on. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, support for the upload quality up to 4K 60fps without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; the same features are available on each plan, with billing lengths from a day to a year and cancellation any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.

Troubleshooting

  • You cannot start a livestream: Check channel verification, livestream eligibility, and whether first-time activation is still pending; YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
  • The preview is not black or the audio is missing: Check the encoder scene’s video source and audio routing, then preview again before going live. The official YouTube pages do not specify an OBS black-screen configuration, so confirm the result in your own encoder and YouTube preview.
  • The stream health is poor or the feed drops: Check the selected bitrate against real upload capacity, reduce it if the connection cannot sustain it, and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Check for competing network use and watch Live Control Room status messages. See YouTube encoder settings and streaming tips.
  • The video is replaced or the stream is interrupted: Check for a third-party content match and confirm that broadcast rights cover both audio and visuals. If licensed content is still being matched, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
  • You cannot find the replay: If the broadcast ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube may not have captured it. Use a local recording or shorter sessions when preserving the replay is important. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
