For a DIY setup, verify your channel, connect OBS to YouTube with a stream key, test your upload connection, and plan around YouTube’s automatic archive threshold: streams under 12 hours are archived automatically. If you want uploaded videos to loop from the cloud instead of keeping a computer running, StreamNeo is an alternative for YouTube streams.
What a 24/7 study livestream involves
YouTube has no separate “study with me” livestream mode. It is a regular livestream with a study-focused scene: for example, a desk view, a timer, quiet study ambience, or breaks between work periods. You can stream through an encoder such as OBS or use YouTube’s webcam workflow. An encoder is useful if you want control over scenes and overlays; webcam streaming is simpler.
“24/7” describes your intended schedule, not a YouTube uptime promise. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish that one broadcast will remain live indefinitely or produce a complete archive beyond that duration. Decide whether to run shorter sessions or a longer broadcast, and check current behavior in Live Control Room before relying on a long stream for its replay. YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance explains the documented threshold.
Check channel eligibility before setup
- Your channel must be verified and must not have a livestreaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube’s general minimum age to livestream is 16.
- If your channel has an active restriction, do not try to bypass it by switching to another channel.
Confirm the current requirements on YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page before scheduling. Choose an accurate title and description, and make the scene your own. Scheduling can show the stream as upcoming and let viewers opt in to notifications; see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose the format and equipment
Encoder or webcam
For a fixed desk camera, scenes, or overlays, use an encoder. A webcam workflow is a simpler option if you only need a camera feed. YouTube also supports mobile and console livestreaming, and says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin. YouTube’s livestreaming tips describe its supported approaches.
OBS Studio is an optional free, open-source encoder. Download it from the official OBS Help Portal. A webcam is optional if you want a face-on or room view; you can also make a study scene around a desk, books, or a timer without buying one.

Horizontal or vertical framing
Choose framing for the scene and the way you want viewers to find and use the stream. YouTube’s format comparison says vertical live streams can be discovered in the Shorts feed. Horizontal streams retain clickable links in chat and support live pre-roll and mid-roll ads. These feature differences can change, so check YouTube’s current format comparison before deciding. A horizontal frame is often easier to compose around a full desk, but that is a framing choice, not a platform rule.
Set up YouTube Studio and OBS
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for the event. The key tells your encoder where to send the feed, so treat it like a password. Do not share it publicly. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps and stream settings guidance.
- Enter them in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key as prompted. If you use a custom server setting, enter the server URL and key from Live Control Room. Labels may vary by OBS version or connection method.
- Build and check the scene. Add the camera or other intended visuals, and check that text, timer, and desk framing are legible at the viewing size. Check the microphone and desktop audio meters; mute sources you do not want on the stream.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Begin sending the feed before the planned start, then confirm YouTube receives a stable preview and that audio and video look right. Start the public event in Live Control Room when ready.
- Test the actual viewing path. Check that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on a phone. If you configured a backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it works. YouTube’s preparation and monitoring advice is at its livestreaming tips page.
YouTube’s documentation emphasizes encoder preparation and monitoring; it does not prescribe one universal OBS bitrate or resolution for every connection and scene. Select settings your actual outbound connection can sustain, then test them before announcing a long session.

Plan for connection and power interruptions
Measure outbound upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate; its streaming tips specify 20% additional upload capacity. Shared household connections can reduce the capacity available to your stream, so test during the hours you expect to go live. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Watch the incoming preview and continue monitoring audio and video during the broadcast.
- If OBS reports dropped frames or the stream becomes unstable, lower the streaming load or address the network connection. OBS says Wi-Fi may be unstable and recommends wired networking when possible: OBS connection troubleshooting (dated 2024-09-30).
- Ethernet is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee against disconnections.
- If power interruptions are a known issue at your location, a UPS for the computer and router is an optional continuity measure. Choose runtime based on your equipment load and battery capacity; there is no universal size recommendation here.
No India-wide upload reliability or power-outage figure is established by the cited platform and OBS guidance. Test your own connection and equipment rather than relying on a national average.

Protect the stream from copyright and policy problems
Use original material or content you have the rights to stream, including music and visuals. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it detects content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and issue a warning; it can interrupt or terminate a stream if the material continues or a strike applies. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary worldwide rights for live content and to comply with applicable laws and regulations in the territory where they stream. This is not India-specific legal or tax advice. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and check authoritative local guidance for questions about your circumstances.

Understand archives, monetization, and repetitive formats
Replay and long sessions
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not assume that a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be fully archived. If a replay matters, plan a session length within the documented threshold or make another recording plan, and confirm available controls in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder and stream settings guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
Revenue and originality
YouTube lists advertising, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue features. Availability depends on monetization and feature eligibility; ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Watch Page ad and Premium revenue also require accepting the Watch Page Monetization Module when eligible. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Monetization policies apply to livestreams. YouTube’s policy page records a July 15, 2025 clarification that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under “inauthentic content,” which is ineligible for monetization; the page says the reused-content policy did not change in that update. A consistent study format alone does not establish a violation, but make the scene and presentation original rather than presenting copied or mass-produced loops as original live work. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Wrong server URL or stream key, or the encoder is not sending | Compare OBS’s connection details with the current event in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password and replace it if exposed. Check YouTube’s encoder setup. |
| Dropped frames or unstable video | Available upload capacity is insufficient or the connection is unstable | Test outbound speed, leave upload headroom, check whether other devices are using the connection, and try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable. Refer to YouTube’s bandwidth tips and OBS troubleshooting. |
| Music or another source interrupts the stream | YouTube detected third-party content, or the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel | Remove or replace the material with content you have rights to use. If you have a license, ask the rights owner whether the channel needs a Content ID allowlist entry. See YouTube’s copyright guidance. |
| The broadcast replay is missing or incomplete | The stream exceeded YouTube’s documented automatic archive threshold | For future streams, plan around the under-12-hour automatic archive guidance and verify current archive behavior and settings in Studio. |
| The event cannot be viewed as expected | Visibility, event setup, or audience-side access may not match the plan | Check the event’s accessibility on the channel/watch page and a phone before the scheduled start, as advised in YouTube’s livestreaming tips. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube study stream made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps the channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and does not go live from a camera.
