First check whether the picture is already black in OBS’s preview. If it is, troubleshoot the source and capture settings; if the preview looks right but the live audience sees black or buffering, investigate the output and network instead. The right fix depends on your source type, operating system, OBS version, and—on some Windows laptops—which GPU OBS uses.
Find where the picture disappears
- Check the OBS preview. If the source is black there, check that the source is visible in the scene, then troubleshoot its type and capture settings.
- If the preview is correct, check the stream itself. Confirm OBS is streaming and inspect playback at the destination. A black or buffering live output with a correct preview is not the same symptom as a black capture source.
- Identify the source and system. Note whether you use Display Capture, Window Capture, or Game Capture, along with your operating system and OBS version. On a Windows laptop, also check whether it has integrated and discrete GPUs.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide distinguishes desktop or single-window capture from Game Capture. The available capture sources and troubleshooting steps vary by operating system.
Match the fix to your capture source
Display or window capture
Use Display Capture when you need the desktop, or Window Capture for one application window. On macOS, OBS provides a macOS Screen Capture source; follow the instructions for your macOS and OBS versions rather than applying Windows-specific fixes.
Game Capture
Game Capture is a Windows-only source in OBS’s Quick Start documentation. If it is black, make sure you are troubleshooting the Game Capture source rather than changing unrelated display-capture settings.

Check visibility and scene setup
- In the OBS scene, confirm the source is enabled and not hidden behind another source.
- Confirm the selected source is the window, display, or game you intend to capture.
- If you change the source type, use the matching OBS guidance and test the result in preview before relying on it.
Windows laptop: check GPU assignment
On a laptop with integrated and discrete GPUs, the captured application and OBS can end up using different GPUs, which may interfere with capture or performance. OBS’s Laptop Troubleshooting and GPU Selection Guide discuss GPU assignment; the recommended GPU depends on the capture source, so do not assume one setting fits every setup.
- Identify whether the blank source is Game Capture, Window Capture, or Display Capture.
- Use OBS’s current GPU-selection instructions for your Windows version and source type. The guides make different recommendations for different capture types.
- Apply the operating-system setting as directed. Restart OBS if the setting or guide calls for it, then check the preview again.
The laptop guide recommends leaving OBS on the high-power GPU in the cases it describes. Treat that as guidance for those circumstances, not a universal rule for every laptop or capture source.

Windows Display Capture: try the documented capture method
OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guide documents a newer Display Capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or higher with OBS 27 or higher. In that context, the source’s default capture method is Automatic; if Automatic does not work, the guide suggests manually trying “Windows 10” as the capture method.
- Open the Display Capture source’s properties in OBS.
- Check the capture method. If it is set to Automatic and the source remains black, try “Windows 10” as directed by OBS.
- Recheck the preview. If the option is absent or the behavior differs, consult guidance for your current OBS and Windows versions.
This is a version-specific Windows instruction, not a fix to apply on macOS or Linux. The cited guidance does not establish that the same behavior applies to every later Windows build.

Distinguish a black source from encoding or connection trouble
Black in the OBS preview
Focus on source visibility, source type, capture method, and—where relevant—GPU assignment. Reducing bitrate or changing network settings will not normally address a source that is already blank in the preview.
Choppy output or rendering and encoding overload
If the image is present but output is choppy, OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide points to rendering or encoding strain, including overloaded GPU resources. Reducing scene complexity or lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce load. These are performance measures, not guaranteed fixes for a black preview.

Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as connection problems between your computer and the streaming ingest server, or as a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide recommends wired networking as one step to investigate. Follow that branch when the stream disconnects or drops frames; it is separate from capture-source troubleshooting.

- Open the actual scene and confirm the intended source is visible in the OBS preview.
- Start a test stream and check playback at the destination, not just in OBS.
- Watch OBS’s status indicators for rendering or encoding strain, dropped frames, and disconnections.
- Test for a few minutes at minimum, as OBS recommends before relying on settings. For a 24/7 use case, a longer validation period is a prudent extra check, but OBS does not specify a guaranteed duration or promise uninterrupted streaming.
A successful test confirms only that the setup worked during that test; it does not establish guaranteed uptime for an unattended stream.
