YouTube Shorts can be up to three minutes long if a video is square or vertical and meets YouTube’s classification rules. The change took effect for qualifying uploads on October 15, 2024, bringing Shorts to TikTok’s documented three-minute baseline while still leaving some TikTok accounts with access to longer videos.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
The maximum is three minutes for a qualifying square or vertical upload. YouTube announced the change on October 3, 2024, with Shorts product lead Todd Sherman saying, “Starting on October 15, you can upload Shorts up to 3 minutes long.” YouTube described the longer limit as a response to creator requests and introduced it alongside updates including templates, a refreshed player and trends features. When does YouTube classify a video as a Short?
For standard channels, YouTube Help says uploads made on or after October 15, 2024 are categorized as Shorts when they are square or vertical and no longer than three minutes. Uploads made before that date retain their previous long-form classification, even if they meet the current length and shape criteria. Official Artist Channels and channels linked to a music Content Owner have separate date treatment in YouTube’s guidance, so those channels should check the applicable Help rules rather than assume the standard-channel cutoff applies. How the new limit compares with TikTok
The change puts YouTube’s maximum closer to TikTok’s longer-video strategy, but the two platforms do not have identical limits or creator systems.

TikTok’s viewing-time figure helps explain why longer videos matter to its strategy, but it does not show that longer clips will perform better on either platform. The platforms’ discovery surfaces, monetization eligibility, music-rights rules and editing tools also differ; duration is only one part of the comparison.
What three minutes changes for creators
The extra time gives creators room for fuller tutorials, demonstrations, explainers, story episodes and commentary without a video being classified as long-form solely because it exceeds one minute. Whether to use all three minutes depends on whether the material holds attention; a longer ceiling is permission, not a recommendation to stretch a clip.

- Keep the video square or vertical if Shorts classification is important for a standard channel.
- Compare performance across durations using retention, completion rate, rewatches, comments and subscriber conversion.
- Choose the length that serves the story or explanation; YouTube has not announced a guaranteed performance uplift from the change.
Can a three-minute Short earn Shorts revenue?
Yes. YouTube says eligible three-minute Shorts can participate in Shorts-feed revenue sharing. Eligibility is not automatic for every upload, and music rights can affect what happens to a video.
Check Content ID claims on longer Shorts
YouTube Help records a rule dated September 24, 2026: new Shorts longer than one minute but under three minutes with an active Content ID claim are no longer automatically blocked. That does not mean a claim is harmless; claims and removals can still affect a video.
