Munn pretended to object to Swift’s win, in a gag that CMT likened to Kanye West’s 2009 interruption of Swift. Years later, Munn was quoted describing the exchange as a bit they had planned. Neither account establishes what their private relationship was then or is now.
What happened at the 2013 People’s Choice Awards?
At the Jan. 9, 2013 ceremony, Munn was presenting and Swift was accepting an award. In its report the next day, CMT described Munn as pretending to be angry about Swift’s win and holding onto the trophy as Swift approached. Swift laughed and said, “This always happens.”
Why did the exchange look like a conflict?
CMT framed the gag as a parody of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when Kanye West interrupted Swift during her acceptance speech. The setup borrowed the shape of a familiar public slight: a winner approaching for an award while someone else appears to withhold it. Without knowing it was a bit, viewers could read the scene as genuine awkwardness or hostility.
What did Munn later say about the joke?
A May 2025 retrospective by Glamour Buff quoted Munn discussing the episode in an E! interview. Munn called it “a whole bit that we planned and it was supposed to be funny,” and added that she had not wanted to take Swift’s award. This is a secondary account quoting Munn; it supports describing the exchange as planned, but does not independently establish the full context of the interview.

Does this show that Munn and Swift had a feud—or are friends?
No. The contemporaneous CMT account documents how the public exchange was presented, and Munn’s later attributed explanation characterizes it as a planned joke. Those sources do not establish a lasting feud, a continuing friendship, or the private feelings either woman had. Headlines asking whether they have a rift or are friends pose questions; they are not proof of either relationship.
