Google launched Chromecast with Google TV in 2020, not 2026. It added a Google TV home screen and a voice remote to the familiar HDMI dongle; a 1080p HD edition followed in 2022. Google replaced the Chromecast line with the Google TV Streamer in 2024, so shoppers looking for Google’s current streaming hardware should compare that device with any remaining Chromecast stock.

What “Chromecast powered by Google TV” means

Chromecast with Google TV was both a streaming device and a software experience. The compact dongle plugged into a television’s HDMI port, while Google TV provided an on-screen interface for browsing movies, shows, live TV and apps. Unlike earlier Chromecast devices, it could be operated directly with its included voice remote rather than requiring a phone for every viewing session.

Google Assistant voice search and Google Cast were also part of the experience: viewers could search by voice or send compatible media from a phone, tablet or Chrome browser. Google TV here means Google’s modern TV interface on Android TV-based devices, not the separate television platform Google introduced in 2010. Google’s 2020 launch announcement describes the combined interface and Chromecast features.

Which device launched, and when?

Device Launch timing Video capability U.S. launch price Status
Chromecast with Google TV (4K) September 30, 2020 Up to 4K HDR at 60 fps $49.99 Discontinued; remaining stock varies
Chromecast with Google TV (HD) September 22, 2022 Up to 1080p HDR $29.99 Discontinued; remaining stock varies
Google TV Streamer (4K) Announced August 6, 2024; available September 24, 2024 Up to 4K HDR $99.99 Google’s Chromecast successor

The dates and launch prices are from Google’s announcements for the 2020 4K model, the 2022 HD model and the Google TV Streamer. Prices are U.S. launch prices, not a guarantee of current pricing.

What the 2020 4K Chromecast offered

The original Chromecast with Google TV brought the remote-and-interface experience to the Chromecast line. Google specified output up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second, with HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support. It also supported Dolby audio pass-through. The dongle connected over HDMI and used Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; its compact design was intended to sit behind the television.

The included remote had a Google Assistant button. The device had 8 GB of advertised storage and 2 GB of memory, according to Google’s product information. Available storage for apps is lower than the total because system software and preinstalled apps use some of that capacity.

“Up to 4K HDR” describes device capability, not a promise that every video will play in that format. A compatible television and connection, a 4K/HDR version of the title, sufficient network bandwidth, and any required service subscription or account tier all matter. App-specific resolution, HDR and audio support can vary.

How the 2022 HD version differed

The HD edition was a lower-cost option for 1080p televisions, not a higher-end replacement for the 4K model. It delivered up to 1080p HDR while retaining the Google TV experience, voice remote and core casting functions. Google announced it at a U.S. launch price of $29.99 and initially made it available in 19 countries.

Google Streamer 4K – Fast Streaming Entertainment with Voice Search Remote, Watch Movies, Shows, Live Channels and Netflix in HDR, Smart Home Control, 32 GB Storage, Porcelain

Google’s launch announcement also included six months of Peacock Premium as a promotion at the time. That was a historical launch offer, not a current benefit to assume when buying an old unit.

Resolution is the clearest difference between the HD and 4K models, but it is not the only consideration when buying discontinued hardware. Check the exact model, condition, available storage, seller and any applicable support information rather than assuming an older device has the same internal performance or practical lifespan as current hardware.

What replaced Chromecast?

Google announced the Google TV Streamer (4K) in August 2024 as the replacement for Chromecast. It is a larger set-top-box-style device rather than a dongle hidden behind the TV, and it retains Google Cast functionality. Google presented it as a more capable streaming device and a smart-home hub; it is not simply a Chromecast renamed.

Google lists 32 GB of storage and 4 GB of memory for the Streamer, compared with 8 GB and 2 GB for the older 4K Chromecast. Its video support includes 4K HDR and Dolby Vision. Google also identifies Dolby Atmos support, Google Home and Matter hub functionality, a built-in Thread border router, and a remote with a customizable button. Google’s U.S. Store page lists the Streamer at $99.99; regional pricing and promotions may differ.

Google Chromecast (3rd Generation) Media Streamer - Black
  • Expand your home entertainment without buying a new TV; Google Chromecast lets you stream your favorites from your phone, tablet, or laptop; no remote needed
  • Chromecast is easy to set up up; just plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming to turn your TV into a smart TV; it works with almost any TV that has an HDMI port
  • Works with the apps you already know and love; enjoy shows, movies, music, games, sports, photos, live TV, and more from over 2,000 streaming apps in up to 1080p
  • With Chromecast, you can stream, pause, play, or adjust the volume right from your phone with just a tap; while you’re streaming, you can still use your phone as you normally do
  • Mirror your laptop screen or turn your tablet into an even better entertainment system; surf the web or see your media on the big screen

One practical detail: Google says the Streamer requires an HDMI 2.1 cable, sold separately. It also needs external power. Do not assume the HDMI cable is in the box when planning a purchase.

Specifications and the displayed U.S. Store prices come from Google’s product page. The older Chromecast’s displayed price does not establish that it is still being manufactured: Google says production ended and remaining units would be sold while supplies lasted, as described in its Chromecast history.

Which one should you buy now?

Choose the Google TV Streamer for a new Google streaming device

For a new purchase, the Streamer is the straightforward choice if you want Google’s current hardware, use a 4K television, need more app storage, or would make use of Google Home, Matter or Thread integration. Its higher U.S. listed price buys more memory and storage and adds smart-home functions, but the device is larger and requires a separately purchased HDMI 2.1 cable.

Consider remaining Chromecast 4K stock only at a meaningful discount

The discontinued 4K dongle may suit someone who specifically wants a compact form factor and finds a genuine, unused unit at a substantial discount. It offers Google TV and 4K HDR, but has much less storage and memory than the Streamer and lacks the newer hub features. Check that the seller and condition are trustworthy; Google’s page displaying the product is not proof of current production or broad availability.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Consider the HD model for a 1080p television

If the TV is limited to 1080p and cost is the priority, an authentic HD unit from a reputable seller may be adequate for basic Google TV and casting. It cannot output 4K, and the $29.99 figure was its 2022 U.S. launch price—not a verified current price.

Keep an existing Chromecast if it still meets your needs

Owners do not need to replace a working device simply because Google introduced a successor. Consider changing it if storage constraints, performance, a new television, or a need for Streamer-only smart-home features is getting in the way. The available facts here do not establish a universal end date for software support, so do not infer one from the product’s launch date alone.

Compatibility details worth checking

Dolby Atmos and audio pass-through

Dolby audio pass-through is not the same claim as a device independently decoding and delivering every Atmos format. Google’s product information says Chromecast with Google TV can pass through Dolby Atmos-compatible content, but achieving an Atmos effect requires a compatible sound system. The television or receiver, soundbar, content service and title must also support the relevant audio format. Google’s technical product information explains the pass-through qualification.

Power and setup

Both Chromecast devices and the Streamer need external power; do not plan on HDMI alone powering them. Google’s setup requirements for the Chromecast include an HDMI-equipped TV, Wi-Fi, a Google Account, a nearby electrical outlet and a compatible mobile device for setup. The Streamer’s separately sold HDMI 2.1 cable is an additional consideration.

Remote and casting expectations

The remote is central to the Google TV interface, while casting remains useful for sending supported content from another device. A product labeled Google TV Streamer still supports Cast, even though it is no longer a Chromecast-branded dongle. Google’s support site provides model-specific help for remote pairing, resets and other Chromecast issues: Google Chromecast Help. Google’s Streamer technical information also identifies remote compatibility details: Google TV Streamer technical specifications.

Stock and seller checks

  • Confirm whether a listing is for the 4K Chromecast, the HD Chromecast or the Google TV Streamer.
  • For discontinued models, verify that the device is genuine, unused if advertised as new, and sold by a reputable retailer.
  • Compare the price with the current Streamer listing rather than treating an old launch price as a current bargain.
  • For a used device, ask about included remote and power accessories and check the return policy.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
