A betrayal, a secret identity or an unexpected inheritance can now arrive in a single phone-sized episode—and end just as the next revelation begins. Kwai’s reported interest in roughly two-minute “mini soap operas” fits a fast-growing format known as the microdrama or short drama. The strategic bet is not simply on shorter episodes: it is on turning a short-video feed into a discovery path for serial stories that can bring viewers back and, potentially, persuade them to pay.
There is an important qualification: available reporting establishes the broader microdrama trend, but does not confirm Kwai’s specific investment, launch date, commissioned slate, app placement or business terms. The format and its market can be assessed; the precise shape of Kwai’s initiative remains unverified.
What is a two-minute mini soap opera?
A microdrama is a scripted serial released in brief installments, commonly around one to three minutes long. Many are made for vertical phone screens, though “short drama” and “vertical drama” are not interchangeable: the first describes episode length and serialized structure, while the second describes the viewing frame. Some short dramas are horizontal, and some vertical ones run longer than two minutes. CGTN’s report on production and format describes the mobile-oriented form.
A series may contain dozens of episodes—sometimes 50 to 100 or more—so the accumulated story can approach the length of a television movie or feature. The familiar soap-opera ingredients are heightened: romance, revenge, family disputes, secret identities, wealthy heirs and abrupt reversals. The distinctive feature is how those stories are paced for short, sequential viewing: a hook arrives quickly, the stakes rise, and an installment often ends on a cliffhanger. The Los Angeles Times’ account of Chinese microdramas describes the genre and its episode structure.

“Two-minute” should be read as a shorthand for the format, not a fixed runtime for every episode. Reported examples span roughly a minute to several minutes, depending on the production and platform.
What is Kwai actually betting on?
The reported Kwai initiative is best understood as a test of whether a short-video platform can extend its existing viewing habit into a longer, serialized relationship with a story. Kwai is associated with Kuaishou, the Chinese short-video company; the claim that it is pursuing a distinct mini-soap-opera initiative should be treated as reported rather than as a fully documented public commissioning plan.
The available evidence does not establish whether Kwai is commissioning original dramas, licensing completed series, distributing third-party shows, or combining those approaches. It also does not settle whether the programming would live in the main Kwai app, a separate product, mini-programs or paid partner apps; whether the effort is domestic or international; or which languages and markets would be served. Those are consequential product questions, not details that can be inferred from the format alone.
The strategic logic is nevertheless clear. A short-video service already trains viewers to watch vertical video and offers a feed through which a story can be sampled. A drama could give users a reason to continue beyond a single clip and return for the next installment. Recommendation systems may help match genres, actors or plot premises to viewers, but that potential is not proof of a particular Kwai commissioning or recommendation practice.
Discovery is not the same as drama capability
Distribution is a plausible advantage for a social-video platform: trailers, opening scenes or free episodes can be surfaced where users already browse. But reach does not automatically supply strong scripts, consistent production, rights control, localization expertise or a sustainable payment experience. The central operational question is whether Kwai is building those capabilities itself or adding another content category to its existing feed; the available reporting does not answer it.

How microdramas differ from ordinary short videos
| Ordinary short video | Microdrama |
|---|---|
| Often designed to stand alone | Built as an installment in a continuing story |
| Frequently creator-led, unscripted or informational | Scripted and produced as a drama |
| A clip may work even when seen out of order | Usually depends on sequential viewing and accumulated plot |
| Performance is often judged clip by clip | Success also depends on whether viewers finish an episode and continue to the next |
| Advertising, sponsorship or creator commerce are common revenue routes | Advertising may sit alongside episode unlocks, virtual currency or subscriptions |
The difference matters because the story itself can support a sequence of commercial decisions. A platform might offer previews or early chapters free, then ask viewers to watch ads or pay to continue. Dedicated short-drama apps use versions of this approach; it is a possible model for a social platform, not a confirmed Kwai product feature.
How the business could work
Microdrama is not one business model. A service can mix revenue sources, and the right combination depends on audience size, payment habits, market and rights arrangements.
Advertising
Free episodes can be supported by in-feed ads, rewarded video, sponsorships or branded integrations. A large free audience may be valuable even when relatively few viewers pay, but advertising revenue depends on attention and ad demand—not downloads alone.
Episode unlocks and virtual currency
Some services let viewers watch an initial run of episodes for free and charge to unlock later chapters, sometimes through in-app currency. A cliffhanger can encourage the next episode, but a paywall can also frustrate viewers if the cost of completing a series is unclear. No Kwai-specific unlock price or payment arrangement is established here.
Subscriptions
A subscription could provide an ad-free experience, catalog access or a periodic episode allowance. That is a possible industry model, not evidence that Kwai offers a microdrama subscription.

Licensing and adaptation
A successful story may be licensed to another service, remade for a new market, compiled into longer episodes or adapted from web fiction. Each route raises rights questions: who controls the underlying story, the script, performances, local remake rights and distribution in each territory?
Testing concepts with a feed
A platform could use trailers or early installments to gauge response to a premise before investing in wider promotion or additional production. That is a strategic inference about what feed distribution can enable, not a verified description of Kwai’s internal process.

Why the format can be cheaper to experiment with—and why that does not guarantee profits
Industry coverage describes microdramas as relatively fast and inexpensive to produce compared with conventional film and television. Short installments can use a limited number of locations, a compact cast and quick production schedules; popular web fiction may also provide adaptable story material. CGTN’s reporting discusses production speed, while People’s Daily Online covers international growth and production economics.
Lower production costs can make a slate of experiments less risky than a small number of expensive series, but they do not make every title successful. One report cited a breakout drama said to have generated about $35 million on a budget below $200,000. That is an exceptional reported case, not a representative return: revenue is not the same as producer profit, and the figures do not by themselves account for marketing, platform shares, rights or other costs.
For Kwai, the meaningful calculation would include the cost of acquiring or making a series, marketing it, localizing it and bringing viewers back, compared with advertising and payment revenue actually retained. A high view count or download total cannot answer that calculation.

Why China’s market matters
The format’s strongest established center is China. Reporting citing Chinese industry data estimated that short dramas had reached 662 million domestic viewers by the end of 2024 and put the sector’s 2024 revenue at about 50.5 billion yuan, or roughly $7 billion. The reported revenue exceeded China’s theatrical box office that year. These are estimates for the broader short-drama market, not Kwai results; the total depends on how “short drama” is defined and which advertising, platform payments and related distribution revenues are counted. China.org.cn’s account of the market reports the audience and revenue figures.

Short-drama apps and vertical series have gained visibility outside China, with the United States often described as a particularly valuable market and Latin America and Southeast Asia as important growth regions. Estimates need careful handling: one report citing Sensor Tower put short-drama app downloads above 370 million globally in the first quarter of 2025; another cited roughly 950 million worldwide downloads through March 2025. The totals appear to use different app sets, date windows or category definitions, so they should not be added together or treated as directly comparable. Downloads indicate installations, not active viewers, completed series or paying customers.
International competition includes dedicated services such as ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, GoodShort and My Drama. Their presence shows that the opportunity is not confined to a social-video feed. EFE’s report on the overseas expansion and platform landscape discusses the international push. Conventional streamers bring established catalogs and subscriptions; TikTok and YouTube have discovery and advertising strengths. These are different product positions, not proof that any one category is permanently unable to adopt another’s features.
Localization is more than subtitles
Stories built around family hierarchy, wealth, romance, crime or revenge may have immediately legible stakes, but their assumptions do not travel automatically. Dialogue, humor, gender roles, family structures, legal norms and class signals can all require adaptation. Overseas distribution may involve dubbed imports, subtitled originals, remakes or locally produced dramas; without confirmed Kwai programming details, it is not possible to say which route the company would use.

Why Quibi is a warning, not a direct comparison
Quibi launched a premium short-form mobile video service in the United States and shut down in 2020, fewer than seven months later. Its failure is relevant because it shows that “short and made for phones” is not, on its own, a winning proposition. But Quibi’s Hollywood positioning, higher-budget content and subscription-led strategy differed from the high-volume, cliffhanger-driven microdrama model. The Los Angeles Times’ comparison provides context for both the format and Quibi.
The useful lesson is not that short-form scripted entertainment cannot work. It is that format novelty has to be paired with a clear reason to watch, an affordable route through the story, repeat use and economics that hold up after promotion.
What could stop Kwai’s strategy from working?
- Weak completion and retention: Viewers may sample a dramatic opening without returning for the next episode or finishing a season.
- Payment friction: Unlocks can convert enthusiasm into frustration if costs accumulate or the payment model is not transparent.
- Story fatigue: Repeated twists and familiar premises can make a fast format feel formulaic.
- Uneven quality and rights: Rapid production does not ensure consistent writing or performance, and adaptations require clear control of underlying stories and distribution rights.
- Localization costs: Dubbing, translation and cultural rewrites can add expense; literal translation may leave a story emotionally flat.
- Regulatory differences: Content rules and payment requirements vary by jurisdiction. Reporting describes regulatory attention in China and elsewhere, but the available sources do not establish a complete, current rule set for a particular Kwai product or market. EFE’s coverage addresses oversight and overseas expansion.
- A distribution brand without a drama identity: A strong feed can deliver discovery, but viewers may need a reason to trust the service for a complete premium story.
What would show whether the bet is working?
Downloads and headline market estimates are not enough. A serious evaluation of a Kwai microdrama business would need to distinguish viewing, retention and economics. The most useful measures would include:
- Episode completion and continuation rates, plus day-one, day-seven and day-30 viewer retention.
- The share of viewers who reach a paywall and then convert to paid viewing.
- Revenue per paying user and the split between advertising and in-app purchases.
- Cost per completed series, customer-acquisition cost and localization cost by market.
- Original versus licensed titles, and the share of viewers watching in Kwai’s main app versus a separate product.
- Refunds, complaints and evidence that viewers understand the total cost of continuing a series.
Those measures would separate curiosity from durable demand. They would also clarify whether Kwai’s advantage is audience discovery, a growing drama library, paid viewing—or some combination.
