Disney and OpenAI announced a three-year licensing agreement on December 11, 2025, intended to let users create short, prompt-driven Sora videos featuring more than 200 Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters and related visual elements. That announcement described future products and a proposed $1 billion Disney investment in OpenAI; it did not establish that every element closed or launched. Sora’s consumer web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026, and its API ended on September 24, 2026.
What Disney and OpenAI announced
The agreement was presented as a three-year license for short social videos that users could prompt, view and share through Sora. The licensed material was described as covering more than 200 characters, along with costumes, props, vehicles and iconic environments from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars.

The announcement also said ChatGPT Images could generate still images using the same intellectual property. These were separate announced capabilities, not evidence that every character or format became available in every OpenAI product.
Which characters were named?
The announcement listed examples rather than publishing a complete public catalog. Named Disney and Pixar characters included Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba and Mufasa.

The important boundary: no talent likenesses or voices
The announcement expressly excluded talent likenesses and voices. It covered fictional characters and associated visual elements, not an actor’s performance, face or voice. A generated image of a character therefore should not be treated as authorization to reproduce the likeness or voice of the person who played that character.

Was the deal legally completed?
The release said the transaction remained subject to definitive agreements, corporate and board approvals, and customary closing conditions. Consequently, the announcement alone is not proof that the license or investment completed.
The sources reviewed do not establish whether the broader relationship was completed, amended, cancelled or terminated after Sora was discontinued. The final legal disposition remains unverified.

What happened to Sora?
OpenAI’s help information gives two separate shutdown dates:
- April 26, 2026: Sora’s web and app experiences were discontinued.
- September 24, 2026: The Sora API was discontinued.
As of October 2, 2026, neither of those Sora access routes is available. The shutdown notices do not, by themselves, resolve the status of Disney’s license, investment or other planned collaboration.

Safety, provenance and creator rights
The announcement committed both companies to age-appropriate policies and other reasonable controls, prevention of illegal or harmful content, respect for content owners’ rights in model outputs, and respect for individuals’ control over their voices and likenesses. It did not publish a detailed technical specification explaining how licensed Disney characters would be enforced.
Separately, OpenAI’s general Sora safety materials describe visible and invisible provenance measures, C2PA metadata and watermarks on many outputs. Those general measures should not be assumed to be special terms of the Disney license.
