Anna’s mother confessed in a letter, identifying Rachel as her first victim. Alice later killed Helen Wang and Zoe Harper, then planted evidence to make Lexy Jones—later identified as Catherine Kelly—look responsible.
How the finale reveals Alice as Rachel’s killer
The finale overturns Alice’s apparent dementia. She has been pretending, and her mind remains sharp. During the year Anna withdrew after baby Charlotte’s death, Alice watched Anna’s old recordings and found a birthday video that changed everything.
The footage shows Anna being sexually assaulted while Rachel, Helen and Zoe watched without intervening. Alice interpreted their failure to help as complicity. She decided that each woman should be punished for what she believed they had enabled.
Rachel was the first victim
Netflix’s finale explanation identifies Rachel as Alice’s first murder. The killing takes place in the woods. The episode depicts Alice stabbing Rachel repeatedly before walking home through the rain.

Rachel’s affair with Jack adds a personal trigger
Alice also saw Rachel having sex with Anna’s estranged husband, Jack, shortly before the murder. That discovery intensified Alice’s anger and immediately preceded Rachel’s death, although Alice’s wider motive was revenge for Anna’s assault.
Was Lexy really the killer?
No. Lexy Jones was the series’ central misdirection. She is later identified as Catherine Kelly, the girl connected to the old assault. Alice had worked as Lexy’s housekeeper and knew the lake house well enough to plant clues that appeared to implicate her.

Alice intended the evidence to send Lexy to prison for life. Detective Priya shoots Lexy before that frame-up can achieve its intended result, but the apparent case against Lexy is still exposed as Alice’s construction.
What happened in Anna’s birthday video?
The recording captures Anna being sexually assaulted while Rachel, Helen and Zoe watch. The finale does not present the three women as the attackers; Alice’s belief is that their refusal to intervene made them responsible. The video therefore supplies the emotional and factual basis for Alice’s killings.

Showrunner and creator William Oldroyd said the adaptation needed the video because “We thought the video camera would be more visual.” It turns a past event into something the audience can see at the same moment Alice discovers it.
What Alice’s confession letter says
Alice explains her actions in a letter to Anna. She writes, “I’m writing this now, baby, because soon you’ll be a mother again,” and describes a mother’s love as “constant. Continual. Relentless.” The letter confirms that Alice planned the murders as an act of protection and revenge, rather than as random violence.

Anna knows Alice’s secret because she has read the confession letter. Jack does not know that his mother-in-law killed his sister Zoe. In the final exchange, Anna and Alice share a smile. The moment signals that Anna understands the truth and chooses to remain silent, leaving Jack unaware of Alice’s full role.
How the television ending differs from Alice Feeney’s novel
The television adaptation and Alice Feeney’s novel share the identity of the killer: Alice. Their reveal mechanics and emphasis differ, however.
| Element | Television adaptation | Alice Feeney novel |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal mechanism | Childhood video footage combined with Alice’s confession letter. | The perspective structure delivers the twist differently; the novel does not specify a single equivalent visual reveal. |
| Alice’s motive | The video makes her interpretation of Anna’s assault and the women’s non-intervention immediate and visual. | Alice remains the killer, but the motive is presented through the book’s different perspective structure. |
| Lexy/Catherine | Alice uses her housekeeper access and knowledge of the lake house to plant evidence against Lexy. | The treatment differs from the series; the novel does not establish an identical frame-up sequence. |
| Epilogue emphasis | Anna’s silence, her reconciliation with Jack, the adoption of Meg and the pregnancy frame the final smile between Anna and Alice. | The novel’s emotional emphasis differs from the television epilogue. |
Oldroyd said the twist surprised him when he read the novel: “I could usually spot whodunnit. But with this one [while reading], I was really blindsided, really surprised and I thought well, that’s great, that’s what you want, isn’t it?”
