1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReports of iTunes Match libraries stuck on Waiting, Uploading, or Uploaded do not automatically mean a worldwide outage. The first check is Apple’s System Status page: its current snapshot lists iTunes Match as available. If the service is available, the cause is more likely to be an account, subscription, Sync Library, file, metadata, eligibility, or track-processing problem.
Before removing songs, rebuilding a library, or signing out, make a separate copy of your original audio files and library data. Apple states that Sync Library and iTunes Match are not backup services: Apple’s support guidance and subscription documentation both warn against treating them as your only copy.

What the status labels actually mean
| Status | Meaning | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Matched | Apple identified a catalog equivalent. | It does not guarantee that your original master or lossless file is preserved in the cloud. |
| Uploaded | Apple stored your file because it did not, or could not, match it to a catalog item. | It is not necessarily a failure; rare or alternate releases may correctly remain uploaded. |
| Waiting or Uploading | The source library is still processing, or processing has stalled. | It does not by itself establish a global outage. |
| Ineligible | The item cannot enter the cloud library under the account, file, content, or service rules. | It does not identify one guaranteed cause. |
Apple’s Windows documentation says matched tracks are supplied as 256 kbps, DRM-free AAC, while unmatched material remains at its original quality: iCloud Music Library in iTunes. Keep lossless or otherwise important originals in your own backup.
Check whether iTunes Match is down
Use Apple’s status page first
Open Apple System Status and look for iTunes Match and related Apple Music or iCloud services. An “Available” entry means Apple is not reporting a broad incident; it cannot rule out a library-specific processing failure.

Use outage reports only as supporting evidence
A third-party monitor such as IsDown’s iTunes Match page can show whether other users are reporting symptoms, but Apple’s own status page should control your decision to wait for a service incident.
Recent Apple Community threads describe libraries stuck at Waiting or large groups remaining Uploaded (Waiting report; Uploaded report). These are user reports, not confirmation of a universal outage.
Verify the account, subscription, and Sync Library
The computer containing the intended local library must have an active iTunes Match or Apple Music subscription, use the Apple Account attached to that subscription, be online, and have Sync Library enabled. Every destination device must use that same account and setting. If Sync Library is missing, Apple says the common explanations are an unqualified subscription or a different Apple Account: Apple’s setup guide.
Mac Music app
- Open Music.
- Choose Account in the menu bar and verify the Apple Account.
- Choose Music > Settings > General.
- Turn on Sync Library, then select OK.
- At the bottom of the sidebar, select Updating Cloud Library to see progress.
Apple Music for Windows
- Open Apple Music and select your user name at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Confirm the Apple Account.
- Open Sidebar Actions > Settings > General.
- Turn on Sync Library and watch the progress indicator.
Legacy iTunes for Windows
Older iTunes uses the label iCloud Music Library rather than Sync Library. Do not apply current Music-app menu paths to that older interface.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Apple Music and tap the account or profile icon.
- Confirm the Apple Account.
- Go to Settings > Music and turn on Sync Library.
Correct the source Mac or PC first. Repeatedly toggling Sync Library on a phone cannot make an unprocessed source library upload.
Inspect Cloud Status on the source computer
- Open the library’s Songs view.
- Show Cloud Status and Cloud Download. On Mac use View > Show View Options; on Windows right-click the column-heading bar.
- Compare one working song with one affected song and record their statuses.
- On Mac, choose File > Library > Update Cloud Library.
Apple’s missing-song guidance explains this inspection and update process: Check Cloud Status and resolve missing music. Keep the source computer connected and the app open long enough for processing; Apple says an interrupted upload can resume when the app is reopened after reconnection: Apple’s subscription support page.
Fix the case that matches your symptoms
Everything is Waiting or Uploading
- Recheck the Apple Account and subscription on the source computer and destination devices.
- Confirm Sync Library is enabled on the source computer.
- Check Apple System Status and leave the source online while processing continues.
- Use Update Cloud Library, then test one or two tracks after the source finishes.
If every track remains stalled after these checks, contact Apple Support rather than deleting the library.
Some songs remain Uploaded
Uploaded can be a successful outcome. Apple may have no equivalent catalog release for a demo, bootleg, live recording, edit, rare edition, or other different master. Metadata or audio differences, duplicates, a changed catalog entry, or an incomplete process can also explain it. Do not delete an Uploaded track merely because it is not Matched.

A track is Ineligible
Check these possibilities:
- The purchase belongs to another Apple Account.
- The library contains a duplicate.
- The file is damaged, offline, or no longer at its recorded path.
- It is unsupported content such as a video, voice memo, audiobook, or podcast.
- The library or file exceeds a service constraint.
- Subscription or authorization state is inconsistent.
An Apple Community response highlights another-account purchases and duplicates as common explanations, but this is community troubleshooting rather than a formal Apple diagnosis: Ineligible-status discussion.
Songs appear but are greyed out or will not play
Separate visibility from playability. Verify the account, Sync Library, internet connection, authorization, and Cloud Status, then try a cloud download on the destination device. Apple’s troubleshooting steps are at Missing or greyed-out songs.
Limits, file rules, and regional differences
| Rule | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Up to 100,000 songs | Apple’s iTunes/Windows documentation states this limit excludes songs or music videos purchased from the iTunes Store. |
| 200 MB per file | Stated in Apple’s iTunes/Windows documentation; current app presentations can differ. |
| Matched quality | 256 kbps, DRM-free AAC for the cloud version described in Apple’s Windows guide. |
| Availability | Apple Music and related features vary by country or region. |
See the detailed documentation at iTunes for Windows, Apple Music for Windows, and Apple’s Internet Services Terms. Extra iCloud Drive storage does not establish a higher music-library limit.

Re-add one non-critical track
First confirm the file plays locally and that a separate backup exists. Record its playlist membership, rating, artwork, and metadata. Remove the library entry without selecting any option that deletes the source file, then re-add that one file and observe Cloud Status. This community-used technique is not a guaranteed Apple fix; test it on a non-critical song before considering more.

Check external drives and multiple libraries
A track can appear in the database while its external drive is disconnected, and a Mac can open a different Music library from the one containing the originals. Reconnect the drive, verify the file path, and confirm you opened the intended library before importing anything again.
Library rebuilding is a last resort
Rebuilding can lose playlists, ratings, play counts, artwork, file paths, or cloud state. Export playlists and copy the library database before attempting it. There is no universal Apple-confirmed rebuild procedure for this specific failure, so seek Apple Support if account and track-level checks do not resolve it.
Choosing another home for your collection
| Service | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| iTunes Match | Apple-focused users who want personal music across Apple devices and maintain independent backups. | Matching is not guaranteed, matched files may be 256 kbps AAC, and it is not a backup. |
| Apple Music | People who want Sync Library plus a full streaming catalog. | Requires a region-dependent subscription and remains unsuitable as the only backup. |
| YouTube Music uploads | A simple personal upload locker; Google supports FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, and WMA and up to 100,000 songs. | It does not provide Apple-style matching; uploaded music is playable only by the uploader, including family plans. See upload limits and formats and uploaded-content access. |
| Plexamp/Plex | Listeners who want control of original files and metadata on a computer, NAS, or server. | Requires storage, setup, maintenance, and suitable remote access. Product information: Plexamp. |
None of these options replaces a local and preferably separate offline backup of the original files and library data.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- All songs affected: check account, subscription, Sync Library, authorization, and Apple System Status.
- Only some songs affected: inspect Cloud Status, file paths, duplicates, eligibility, and catalog differences.
- Songs visible but unavailable: check destination account, Sync Library, Cloud Download, authorization, and catalog availability.
- Considering deletion or a rebuild: stop until a verified backup exists and you have tested a single non-critical track.
