If you are 18 or older, sign in and enable Reddit’s mature-content setting. On Reddit.com, go to Settings → Preferences and turn on Show mature (18+) content. Android users find it under Avatar → menu → Settings → View options. On iPhone or iPad, Reddit currently manages this control through a browser, not the iOS app. If posts load but media is obscured, change the separate blur setting. A locked setting or verification prompt requires resolving the account’s age status; there is no legitimate bypass.
The labels below reflect Reddit’s documented interfaces as of August 18, 2026; Reddit can move or rename controls.
Identify what is actually failing
| What you see | Most likely explanation |
|---|---|
| An NSFW subreddit or post will not open | Mature content is disabled, an age check is incomplete, or the community/post is private, quarantined, removed, deleted or banned. |
| Posts appear but images or videos are blurred | Blur mature (18+) images and media is still enabled. |
| No NSFW control in the iPhone app | Reddit says the iOS app does not manage this setting; use mobile or desktop web. |
| The toggle is greyed out or keeps reverting | The account may be classified as under 18, require regional age confirmation, or contain incorrect age information. |
| Reddit asks for a selfie, ID or age confirmation | An account- or region-specific age-assurance process is required. |
| Search does not show adult communities | Mature search results may be excluded, or the community may be private, unavailable or no longer indexed. |
Reddit states that mature content is for users aged 18 or older. That is separate from the ordinary minimum age for using Reddit, which is generally 13 but can be higher under local law. See Reddit’s age requirements.
Fix NSFW access on Reddit.com

- Open Settings, then the Preferences tab.
- Under content preferences, enable Show mature (18+) content.
- Choose whether to leave Blur mature (18+) images and media enabled. With blur on, you can reveal eligible items individually; with it off, media is shown immediately.
- Reload the subreddit or post.
Reddit documents these web controls, including the separate blur preference, at How do I view NSFW communities?

Check the account age
Under-18 accounts cannot unlock mature content by changing a preference. Reddit may also have inferred an age range, received an age signal from Apple or Google, or require a regional check. Confirm that you are signed into the intended account and that its age information is correct.

Complete an official age check
Depending on location and device, Reddit may direct you to Apple or Google age signals or to Persona for a selfie or government-ID check. Reddit says it receives the verified age or status rather than storing submitted identity photos itself; this is Reddit’s description of its process, not an independent audit. Start only from Reddit’s own prompt or help center.
If verification fails
- Confirm the correct Reddit account is active.
- Retry in Safari, another standard browser or desktop web instead of an embedded browser.
- On iOS, make the setting change on the web, not in the app.
- Check whether the account’s birthday or age classification is wrong.
- Use Reddit’s age-information correction route described in Why is Reddit asking for my age?.
- Contact Reddit support if the verification loop continues.
Regional age-verification rules
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and can change. Enabling a preference alone may not satisfy a local age-assurance rule.

- Keep Information Privacy: Effective "black out" privacy from side views outside the 60-degree viewing angle. - Easy Installation: Choose between 2 simple Options; Slide-On/Off or Mounted. Not touchscreen compatible
- United Kingdom: Reddit requires age confirmation for restricted material, potentially through an Apple account or Persona. See Reddit’s UK guidance.
- European Union, EEA and Switzerland: Reddit may request confirmation when it has information suggesting a user is under 18 and the user attempts to view mature content. Methods can include Apple signals or Persona. See the DSA guidance.
- Australia: The general platform minimum age is 16, but under-18 users cannot access mature content. Reddit describes an open-bank-account check through Persona’s ConnectID integration among possible routes. See the Australia guidance.
- Brazil: Under-16 users face Brazil-specific parental-approval or suspension rules, and under-18 users cannot access mature content. Reddit says Android users may share age-range information through a Google account. See the Brazil guidance.
- United States and elsewhere: Do not assume every account receives the same prompt. Device, account signals and local requirements affect the flow, while Reddit’s mature-content rule remains 18+.
If only one subreddit or post is unavailable
An NSFW preference cannot restore content that is unavailable for another reason. Check whether the community is private, quarantined, banned, deleted or renamed, or whether the post was removed. Confirm the direct URL and try the community while signed in. A regional restriction or separate policy action can also apply.
If search cannot find NSFW communities
First enable mature content. Then check the search preference for including NSFW results; this option is explicitly documented in Old Reddit. A private, deleted, banned or unindexed community will not appear merely because the account is allowed to view mature material.
Profile NSFW labeling is a different setting
Your profile can be marked mature independently of whether you can view mature posts. If the profile label itself is wrong, Reddit documents a separate web control and explanation at Why was my profile marked NSFW?
Quick Recap
Bestseller No. 3
What not to do
- Do not submit identity documents to unofficial “Reddit verification” websites.
- Do not falsify a birthday or attempt to bypass a minor-account restriction.
- Do not treat a VPN as an age-verification solution; it is not an official method and can create additional regional or account problems.
- If a third-party Reddit app behaves differently, test the account on Reddit.com or an official app before concluding that the account itself is blocked.
Final checklist
- Sign in to the intended Reddit account.
- Confirm you meet Reddit’s 18+ requirement and any local rule.
- Enable mature content on the correct platform.
- Disable the separate blur setting if you want immediate media display.
- On iPhone or iPad, change the control through Reddit.com and restart the app.
- Reload the page or app.
- Complete only Reddit’s official age-verification flow if prompted.
- Request an age-information correction or contact Reddit when the account is misclassified or verification will not complete.
