Press the Roku remote’s Star button four times quickly to stop spoken menus, or turn off Screen Reader under Settings > Accessibility. Separate instructions cover Audio Description and Picture off.

If your Roku TV is reading menus or button presses aloud, press the Star (*) button four times quickly. That toggles Roku’s Screen Reader—formerly called Audio Guide—when its shortcut is enabled. You can also turn it off through Home > Settings > Accessibility > Screen Reader > Off. Roku describes Screen Reader as the text-to-speech feature for menus and other interface text. Roku’s Screen Reader instructions

First, identify which voice you are hearing

What you hear or see Likely feature What to change
The Home screen, settings, highlighted apps, or buttons are announced. Screen Reader (formerly Audio Guide) Turn off Screen Reader.
A narrator describes actions, scenery, expressions, or other visual events during a program. Audio Description Change the program’s audio track in the streaming app.
The TV speaks after you press or hold a microphone button. Voice search or voice control Stop using the microphone control; this is separate from Screen Reader.
The screen is black while audio continues. Picture off or Turn off display Press OK to restore the picture.

Roku’s accessibility features and voice-search functions are separate; names and availability can vary by Roku OS version, TV manufacturer, device type, and country. Roku’s current documentation is specifically framed for supported products in the United States and Canada. Roku accessibility information

Turn off the talking menus

Use the four-press shortcut

  1. Find the remote’s Star (*) button. It is generally below and to the right of the directional pad, not the microphone button.
  2. Press the Star button four times rapidly.
  3. Roku should announce that Screen Reader is off, and menu navigation should stop being spoken.

The shortcut works only if it has been enabled in Accessibility settings. Roku documents the four-press shortcut

Use the Settings menu

  1. Press Home on the Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Accessibility.
  4. Select Screen Reader. On older Roku software or guides, this may be labeled Audio Guide.
  5. Set it to Off.

Roku’s support documentation says the feature reads menus, highlighted items, and other on-screen Roku interface elements. It also lists speech-rate and volume controls. Roku Screen Reader support

Prevent accidental reactivation

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Screen Reader.
  2. Open Shortcut.
  3. Choose Disabled or Off.

Wording can differ by software version. Disabling the shortcut leaves the Screen Reader off unless you turn it on from the menu.

If a narrator is describing the movie or show

When the voice occurs only during a film, episode, or live program and describes visual action, it is probably Audio Description, not Roku’s Screen Reader. Audio Description is an alternate track supplied by the program or streaming service.

There is no universal Roku path for this change: apps, titles, countries, and devices can expose different controls. Roku Community guidance distinguishes menu announcements from program narration and notes that channels may use their own settings. Roku Community discussion of program narration

Screen Reader is not closed captions

  • Screen Reader/Audio Guide: speaks Roku interface text aloud.
  • Audio Description: narrates visual events in a program.

If you meant “turn off the screen”

During playback, press Star (*) > Options > Picture off. Some Roku TVs call this Turn off display. The display goes dark while audio continues; it does not disable spoken menus. Press OK to restore the picture. Compatible Roku voice remotes may also accept “Turn off display” or “Turn off the screen”; Voice Remote Pro can use “Hey Roku.” Roku’s screen-off instructions

Why the Star shortcut may not work

  • The shortcut is disabled: use Home > Settings > Accessibility > Screen Reader > Off, then re-enable or leave the shortcut disabled as desired.
  • You pressed the wrong button: the microphone button is not the Screen Reader toggle.
  • The remote missed a press: try again with four distinct, rapid Star-button presses.
  • Your software uses older wording: look for Audio Guide instead of Screen Reader.
  • Your remote is unavailable or faulty: use the Settings menu, the Roku mobile app where supported, or the TV’s physical controls to reach Accessibility.

Roku states that Screen Reader can be controlled from Accessibility settings, making the menu route the dependable fallback. Roku accessibility overview
