Greg Hildebrandt, the Detroit-born illustrator whose brilliant-blue Star Wars poster helped define the original film’s late-1970s identity, died on October 31, 2024, aged 85. He was also half of the Brothers Hildebrandt, the twin team whose Lord of the Rings calendars made their fantasy art internationally famous.

Who was Greg Hildebrandt?

Gregory “Greg” Hildebrandt was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 23, 1939. His twin brother, Tim Hildebrandt (1939–2006), was his principal artistic collaborator; together they worked under the name the Brothers Hildebrandt. Greg died on October 31, 2024, at age 85.

An obituary described Hildebrandt as a master of light and color. His career moved across fantasy and science-fiction illustration, comics-related work, trading-card art and licensed properties, including major assignments for Star Wars and Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

The Star Wars poster that made the brothers famous

Lucasfilm credits Greg and Tim Hildebrandt with painting the iconic blue Star Wars artwork used in the original film’s late-1970s marketing and merchandising campaign. The brothers completed the poster art in about 36 hours.

The image appeared far beyond cinemas: on T-shirts, buttons, pin-up posters, newspaper advertisements and other promotional material. Its saturated blue palette and dramatic figures became inseparable from the first Star Wars phenomenon, introducing the film to audiences who encountered the artwork before or alongside the movie itself.

More Star Wars work

The brothers’ franchise work continued after the original campaign. Lucasfilm records 100 pieces created for the 1996 Shadows of the Empire multimedia project, as well as illustrations for the Star Wars Great Big Flap Book associated with The Phantom Menace. Greg later produced Star Wars artwork for Oreo packaging, extending his contribution from theatrical promotion into later licensed products.

Did the Brothers Hildebrandt illustrate Lord of the Rings?

Yes. The Brothers Hildebrandt gained international prominence through calendars published in 1976, 1977 and 1978 depicting J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Their Middle-earth images were reproduced in calendars, art books, posters and merchandise, giving a large audience a visual vocabulary for Tolkien’s characters and landscapes before later screen adaptations defined the look of the stories for many viewers.

The Tolkien calendars also established the brothers as leading fantasy illustrators rather than artists known only for one film campaign. Their wider portfolio included other fantasy and science-fiction subjects, work connected with DC and Marvel, and collectible art such as trading cards.

Greg Hildebrandt’s career in context

Although the brothers’ names are closely linked, Greg’s career continued after Tim’s death in 2006. He remained active in licensed illustration and other commercial art, including the later Star Wars projects documented by Lucasfilm. The distinction matters: some of the best-known images are joint Brothers Hildebrandt works, while later assignments identify Greg as an individual artist.

How his family described him

Jean Scrocco, Hildebrandt’s wife and longtime collaborator, announced his death in a statement expressing that she had lost her life partner and best friend. She also noted that they had worked together for 45 years. Hildebrandt’s funeral-home obituary remembered his lifelong calling in similarly direct terms: he said that art had chosen him rather than the other way around.

Books and collected art

Readers looking for reproductions can start with The Art of the Brothers Hildebrandt and Star Wars: The Art of the Brothers Hildebrandt, both listed among collected works in a December 2024 reference compilation. Editions, availability and rights can vary, so check the specific publication details before buying.

Why Greg Hildebrandt’s work still matters

Hildebrandt’s importance rests on the reach of his images as much as on their draftsmanship. The blue Star Wars poster transformed a film advertisement into a durable piece of popular visual culture, while the Tolkien calendars demonstrated how illustration could shape a reader’s imagined Middle-earth across years of repeated viewing. Together, those bodies of work connect twentieth-century fantasy illustration, film merchandising and the collecting culture that grew around both.
