The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, now known as Allen Family Philanthropies, announced $9,427,545 in grants on September 24, 2024, for eight nonprofit arts and culture organizations in downtown Seattle. The two- and three-year awards are intended to expand cultural spaces, artist support, and free or low-cost public programming.
Who received the downtown Seattle grants?
The package supports organizations spanning waterfront programming, independent artists, film, music, museums, theater, studios, and community arts spaces. Friends of Waterfront Park received the largest award, while the remaining grants address access, operations, facilities, and public engagement.
| Organization | Award and term | What the grant supports | Primary audience or setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friends of Waterfront Park | $5,000,000 over three years | Community-led cultural programming at Waterfront Park | Residents and visitors; waterfront public space |
| Shunpike | $1,627,545 over three years | More equitable access to expertise, opportunities, and business services | Independent artists and arts groups |

| Common Area Maintenance | $200,000 over three years | A second Belltown site, additional low-cost studios, and broader programming | Artists and local community members |
The itemized awards total $9,427,545. The terms are multi-year commitments rather than one-time payments: six organizations receive three-year awards, while Seattle Art Museum’s grant runs for two years.
What will the funding change?
More public and free programming
Waterfront Park, Seattle Symphony, SIFF, and Seattle Art Museum will use support for programming that reaches residents and visitors. The museum’s award is specifically designed to restore the evening portion of Free First Thursday and help it become financially self-sustaining.

Better conditions for artists
Shunpike’s grant focuses on practical business services and opportunities for independent artists and arts groups. Common Area Maintenance adds low-cost studio capacity, while Base Camp Studios combines accessibility work with artist support and operational stability.
Stronger venues and access
The grants also pay for physical and organizational improvements. Theatre Off Jackson’s award covers staffing and facility updates; Base Camp Studios will improve access to its gallery and community space; and SIFF’s funding includes accessibility improvements and expanded community engagement.

Why downtown Seattle?
The foundation’s announcement describes downtown Seattle as a central arts and economic hub: it contains two-thirds of Seattle’s art-sector jobs and 10% of the city’s residents. The grant mix reflects that concentration, pairing public-facing cultural activity with the facilities, studios, services, and staffing that allow organizations to keep operating.
Anh Nguyen, director of Arts, Youth, and Communities at the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, said: “A vibrant arts and culture sector is critical for our economy and an essential element of any thriving community.”

How this relates to later statewide funding
In August 2025, ArtsFund identified Allen Family Philanthropies as the former Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and reported a separate $10 million Community Accelerator round for 930 Washington arts and culture grantees. That program brought its three-year total to $30 million, but it is distinct from the $9,427,545 downtown Seattle package announced in 2024.

The most visible results should appear through Waterfront Park programming, SIFF community activities and screenings, Seattle Symphony events and public art at Benaroya Hall, Seattle Art Museum’s Free First Thursday evenings, and expanded or improved artist and studio spaces. Each organization controls its own schedule and implementation, so event dates and admission details should be checked with the organization before attending.
