Channel 4 is getting hundreds more free TV shows through a major UKTV deal

Channel 4—not U itself—is the streamer getting the boost. On 9 October 2025, Channel 4 announced a multi-year partnership with UKTV, the broadcaster behind the free U service. The plan was for U catch-up programmes and box sets to appear in the Channel 4 app from January 2026, alongside Channel 4’s own programming. The announcement named shows including The Office, Red Dwarf, QI and Big Zuu’s Big Eats.

The service is free with advertising, but “free” does not guarantee every U title, every episode, permanent availability or access outside the UK. The January 2026 date was the announced timetable; the current Channel 4 catalogue should be checked title by title.

What is the rival UK streamer?

The rival in this story is Channel 4’s streaming service, now generally called Channel 4 and formerly known as All 4. UKTV’s U service is not being absorbed. U remains a separate free on-demand platform at u.co.uk, while selected U programming is intended to sit inside the Channel 4 app.

Channel 4 said the multi-year arrangement would widen its catalogue and help UKTV reach Channel 4’s younger streaming audience. The deal was reported on 9 October 2025 by T3.

Which programmes are involved?

The reported examples were:

  • The Office
  • Red Dwarf
  • QI
  • Big Zuu’s Big Eats

These are examples, not a permanent or complete catalogue. Rights can differ by season, episode, territory and expiry date. A programme being listed on U does not prove that the same series is available in Channel 4’s app. U’s own catalogue currently advertises programming such as Parks and Recreation, The Bill, MasterChef Australia, Bangers & Cash, Magnum P.I. and The Brokenwood Mysteries; those examples should not be treated as a list of titles duplicated on Channel 4.

When did the partnership start?

The announcement said the partnership would begin in January 2026, with U catch-up content and box sets entering the Channel 4 app. That is an announced launch window, not proof that every promised programme is live now. On the current service, search for a specific title and check whether it has a complete series, selected episodes or only a limited catch-up window.

Is Channel 4 really free?

Channel 4’s standard streaming service is ad-supported and was described as free in the contemporary report. You may still need an account, a compatible device and an internet connection. Broadband, electricity and hardware are not included in the word “free”, and advertising remains part of the free tier.

The same report mentioned an ad-free option at £3.99 a month in October 2025. That is a historical price, not a verified October 2026 price; check Channel 4’s live subscription page before paying. Watching live television or BBC iPlayer in the UK also has separate TV-licensing implications.

Channel 4, U, iPlayer and ITVX compared

Service Main role Live television Free-access qualification Key limitation
Channel 4 Channel 4 originals plus selected U programming Channel 4 streaming options vary by device and service area Ad-supported viewing is free; an optional paid ad-free tier has been reported Rights, seasons and availability can change
U UKTV’s own free shows and channels UKTV channels and on-demand content through U Promoted as a free service It is a separate app and catalogue from Channel 4
BBC iPlayer BBC programmes, live channels and catch-up Yes UK access and TV-licensing rules apply BBC-focused catalogue
ITVX ITV programmes and acquired content Yes Free advertising tier, with paid options subject to current terms Availability follows ITV’s rights and subscription structure

The UKTV deal makes Channel 4 broader and potentially more competitive with iPlayer and ITVX. It does not make Channel 4 a replacement for either service, nor does it give it the whole U catalogue.

How to watch

  1. Open the current Channel 4 app or visit channel4.com on a supported browser.
  2. Sign in or create a Channel 4 account if prompted.
  3. Search for the programme and open its programme page.
  4. Check the episode list: a title may have a full box set, selected episodes or a time-limited catch-up run.
  5. If it is missing, search the U app or website at u.co.uk; the partnership does not duplicate every title.

Supported routes commonly include smart-TV apps, phones, tablets and web browsers, subject to the device’s operating system and current app support. Update the app and device software, check regional settings and use the latest official app if login or playback fails.

Where does Freely fit?

Freely is a different product from both Channel 4 and U. It aggregates live and on-demand television, using Wi-Fi and compatible hardware, and brings together services from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. See freely.co.uk for compatible televisions and devices.

Channel 4 also launched three Freely live channels—4Reality, 4Homes and 4Life. These are linear streamed channels, not the same thing as the Channel 4 app’s on-demand catalogue. You do not need to buy a Freely television to use Channel 4 or U directly; Freely is an aggregation option for compatible equipment.

What “free” does—and does not—promise

  • It does not remove adverts from the standard Channel 4 experience.
  • It does not guarantee that a U title, season or episode is also on Channel 4.
  • It does not include broadband or the cost of a compatible television or streaming device.
  • It does not guarantee access while abroad; UK streaming rights are commonly territory-limited.
  • It does not mean the same programme will remain available indefinitely.

Verdict

This partnership gives Channel 4 a more useful free-TV catalogue and reduces the need to switch apps for selected UKTV and Channel 4 programmes. It is best understood as a significant expansion of Channel 4, not a merger with U or a wholesale alternative to BBC iPlayer. For the widest free UK viewing, keep the relevant services available and check each app’s current rights rather than assuming one search result represents every platform.
