The first widely documented live audio-and-video broadcast over the internet took place on June 24, 1993. The band Severe Tire Damage performed at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto, California, and the show was transmitted over the MBone (Internet Multicast Backbone). Remote listeners and viewers reportedly received it as far away as Australia.
It was not a YouTube- or Twitch-style broadcast. The event used experimental multicast networking and specialist software, so “livestream” is a modern label applied to an early live internet broadcast.
The short answer: June 24, 1993
Severe Tire Damage’s Xerox PARC performance is the best-supported answer when “first livestream” means a live performance carrying both audio and video over the internet. The band’s historical account identifies the date, location and international reach, while the MBone technical history documents the audio-and-video multicast.
The claim should be phrased as the earliest widely documented live audio-and-video internet broadcast, not as proof that no earlier experiment existed. Some accounts mention MBone audio/video experiments in 1992, but they provide less specific documentation than the 1993 performance.

How the first livestream worked
A live performance at Xerox PARC
Severe Tire Damage played from the patios of Xerox PARC in Palo Alto. Researchers connected the performance’s audio and video to the internet as it happened, turning a band rehearsal-space-style event into a practical demonstration of networked media.
The MBone’s multicast design
The MBone was an experimental multicast network layered over the internet. Instead of sending a separate copy of a stream from the source to every viewer, multicast could distribute one stream through participating network nodes. That reduced duplicated traffic when early connections had very limited capacity.

Whether you need a top-down overhead shot, a side-angle view, or a straight-on framing, you can lock your device securely into place with a simple twist—no extra tools required.
Multicast also made the setup demanding. Viewers needed compatible software, access to the MBone infrastructure and network paths that supported the experiment. There was no universal browser player, creator account, public chat, automatic transcoding or content-delivery network.
What viewers experienced
By modern standards, the broadcast was primitive: low-resolution moving images, limited frame rates, telephone-like audio and delays caused by packet loss and synchronization problems. A historical account of the event describes those bandwidth and timing constraints in the context of early internet video at History of the Internet: Severe Tire Damage.
Why different sources give different dates
| Milestone | Date | What happened | Why it is cited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early MBone experiments | 1992 or earlier claims | Some accounts describe early audio/video multicasts. | They may predate 1993, but the events are less specifically documented. |
| First widely documented live audio/video performance | June 24, 1993 | Severe Tire Damage performed at Xerox PARC over the MBone. | Best answer to the general “first livestream” question. |
| First major rock-band internet broadcast | November 18, 1994 | The Rolling Stones transmitted about 20 minutes from their Dallas concert over the MBone. | A major celebrity and promotional milestone, not the first livestream. |
| Prominent live sports web stream | September 5, 1995 | ESPN SportsZone carried live audio of a Yankees–Mariners game using RealAudio. | An important commercial web broadcast, often misidentified as the first livestream. |
A 1997 Washington Post technology timeline is one source that mentions 1992 MBone audio and video. That is best treated as an earlier experimental claim, not a replacement for the better-documented 1993 performance.

The Rolling Stones’ 1994 concert
On November 18, 1994, the Rolling Stones sent approximately 20 minutes from their Cotton Bowl concert in Dallas over the MBone. Contemporary coverage described it as the first major rock concert broadcast in cyberspace, while also noting that Severe Tire Damage had already made a live MBone broadcast in 1993.
This distinction matters: the Stones were among the first famous mainstream acts to broadcast online, not the first act to livestream. See the Washington Post report and Severe Tire Damage’s historical archive.
What ESPN changed in 1995
On September 5, 1995, ESPN SportsZone streamed live radio coverage of a New York Yankees–Seattle Mariners baseball game. Users reached the broadcast through ESPN’s website and listened with RealAudio. Contemporary reporting called it the first baseball game broadcast live via the World Wide Web.

The event helped move live internet media from research demonstrations toward ordinary public web use. A corporate filing records the broadcast as live radio streamed to thousands of subscribers worldwide using technology developed by Progressive Networks, later known as RealNetworks. A prerecorded movie delivered over the internet is streaming, but it is not necessarily live. Historical timelines identify Wax or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees as an early streamed film; that is a separate milestone from a performance transmitted while it happened. The categories should be kept distinct:
- the first streamed film;
- the first live audio transmission;
- the first live audio-and-video transmission;
- the first live concert;
- the first major commercial webcast;
- the first live sports web broadcast; and
- the first consumer-platform livestream.
See the Timeline of online video for the separate film-streaming history.

How the 1993 event differs from livestreaming today
The technical definition is simple: live media delivered over an internet network in real time. The consumer definition is broader in experience, usually involving a public platform, browser or app, creator tools, moderation and a large audience.
Broadband, web video players, smartphones and commercial platforms later made live video practical for ordinary users. Those developments created the mass-market livestreaming era in the late 2000s and 2010s; they did not move the technical starting point to that period.
A precise way to state the answer
If a single date is required, use this formulation: June 24, 1993, when Severe Tire Damage performed at Xerox PARC and transmitted live audio and video over the MBone. Add “widely documented” because earlier experimental claims exist and because “livestream” was not the standard term at the time.
