When Netflix shows blank posters, gray placeholders, or a text-only home page, the usual problem is that your device is not maintaining a complete connection to Netflix. Restart Netflix, fully restart the device, then restart the modem and router. If video playback works while artwork is missing, refresh the app or browser data before taking more disruptive steps.
First, identify the failure
| What you see | Likely area | Start here | If it continues |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blank posters or gray boxes everywhere | Network connection, DNS/VPN, app or device software | Restart the device and home network | Test fast.com and another device |
| Artwork missing on one device only | Stale app data, firmware, browser settings, or local security software | Update, sign out, and refresh Netflix data | Reinstall the app or try another browser |
| White page with text but no images | Date/time, browser settings, network filtering, or connection | Check the clock, private browsing, and network access | Test another network and contact its operator |
| Playback also fails | Broader network or Netflix-access problem | Restart the modem/router and test fast.com | Check with your ISP |
| Only one title lacks artwork | Temporary title or catalog-data issue | Search for the title and open its detail page | Try another profile or device, then retest later |
| Downloads are missing | Download, profile, or device-storage issue | Check the Downloads section and profile restrictions | Do not assume missing thumbnails are the cause |
Missing artwork is different from a title being unavailable in your region, hidden by a profile maturity setting, or removed from Downloads. Those conditions affect what you can see, not necessarily whether image files render.
The least-disruptive fix sequence
- Restart Netflix. Close the app or browser tab completely, reopen it, and test several titles.
- Power-cycle the device. Turn off the TV, streaming player, phone, tablet, or computer. For a TV or streaming device, unplug it if possible, leave it fully off for about 15 seconds, then turn it on again. Standby mode may not clear the fault. Netflix documents this procedure at its device-restart guide.
- Restart the modem and router. Turn off the affected device, unplug both network boxes, wait 30 seconds, plug them back in, wait about one minute for reconnection, then restart the device. Netflix identifies a dropped or incomplete connection as a common reason images fail to load: Netflix Help Center.
- Run Netflix’s connection test. On the same network, open fast.com in a browser and let it finish. If the page itself will not load, the device or network is not reaching Netflix normally.
- Temporarily remove connection modifiers. Turn off a VPN or proxy. If you changed DNS on the device or router, restore the default setting, restart Netflix, and test again.
- Update software. Install the newest Netflix app, browser, operating-system, and device-firmware updates. Netflix says an “Update required” message can mean that the browser, operating system, or device is outdated or no longer supported: update guidance.
- Refresh Netflix data. Use the platform instructions below. Sign-out, clearing cookies, clearing app data, and reinstalling can require your account password; clearing app data or uninstalling also removes downloads on many devices.
Smart TV and streaming-player fixes
Restart, then check the network
Use the complete power-off procedure above, followed by a modem/router restart. Open another app on the same device. If other apps also struggle, focus on Wi-Fi or the internet connection rather than Netflix.
Sign out and update
Netflix menu labels differ among Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, consoles, and set-top boxes. In Netflix, look for Get Help, Settings, or Sign out; sign back in and test again. Then update Netflix and the device firmware through the manufacturer’s normal software-update screen.

Reinstall only after the network checks
Reinstalling can sign you out and erase locally stored downloads. Use it when restarting, updating, and signing out have not restored artwork. A factory reset of the television or streaming player is a last resort because it erases device settings and other app logins.
Browser fixes
- Refresh Netflix normally, then open it in a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, script blockers, privacy filters, and security extensions. If thumbnails return, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict.
- Open netflix.com/clearcookies, sign in again, and retest. Netflix’s cookie-reset process signs you out but is less disruptive than deleting every browser cookie.
- Update the browser and try another supported browser.
- Restart the computer and home network.
For a white page containing text but no images, verify that the computer’s date, time, and time zone are correct. School, workplace, hotel, café, and other managed networks may block streaming; switch to a permitted private network or ask the network operator whether video services are restricted. Do not attempt to bypass an organization’s controls. Netflix’s guidance for this symptom is at its white-page troubleshooting page.

VPN, proxy, DNS, Wi-Fi, and firewall checks
VPN, proxy, and custom DNS
Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily and restore the device or router’s default DNS if you changed it. Restart Netflix after each change, then re-enable one setting at a time to identify a conflict. Netflix treats DNS changes as a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed speed or thumbnail fix: browser and connection troubleshooting.
Weak or unstable Wi-Fi
- Move the router and device closer together.
- Keep the router away from other wireless devices and appliances.
- Place it in an open location, not on the floor or inside a cabinet.
- Use Ethernet temporarily, if available, to separate Wi-Fi problems from internet-service problems.
A connection can be good enough for some interface text while image requests time out. If every device on the network is affected, ask the ISP about an outage and provide whether each device uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular data, or a hotspot.

Managed networks and firewall rules
Netflix lists secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com among addresses used in connection diagnostics. They are not a permanent, exhaustive whitelist. Only network administrators should change firewall or DNS rules, and they should use Netflix’s current instructions rather than copying an old list.
How to tell whether Netflix or your network is responsible
- Check Netflix on another device using the same network.
- Try the affected device on a different permitted network, such as a phone hotspot where appropriate.
- Test another app on the affected device.
- Check whether every Netflix profile is affected.
- Note whether playback works even when posters do not.
If the same failure follows your home network across devices, the ISP, router, DNS, or a network policy is more likely. If only one device fails while Netflix works elsewhere, local app, browser, firmware, or security settings are more likely. A one-title problem can be temporary catalog or artwork delivery trouble; search manually, try another profile or device, and retest later. Do not label it a Netflix-wide outage without a current status check.

When to contact the ISP or Netflix
Contact the ISP when fast.com will not load, multiple devices fail on the same connection, other services are also unstable, or the ISP confirms a local outage. Contact Netflix support when other networks and devices work but one supported installation still fails after restarting, updating, signing out, and refreshing data.
Have these details ready:
- Device make and model, operating-system version, and Netflix app or browser version.
- Whether all titles or only some lack artwork.
- Whether playback and search work.
- Whether another profile or device is affected.
- Connection type: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, hotspot, cellular, or satellite.
- Any error code and the result of fast.com.
These comparisons let support distinguish a local device fault from a network-access or service-side problem without erasing your profiles or account.
