What happened to Showbox?
Showbox historically attracted viewers with free movies and series, search and browsing, streaming, and in some versions downloads distributed outside mainstream app stores. Reporting in 2018 linked Showbox distribution sites with copyright litigation and settlements, including warnings that the app was not a legitimate way to view copyrighted films: TorrentFreak’s report.
Current websites using the Showbox name are not a clearly verified continuation of one official service. Unrelated pages make their own claims about security, legality and downloads; those claims are not authoritative. Treat “Showbox APK” search results as a security risk rather than as a dependable streaming recommendation.

The best services in detail
Tubi: best overall
Tubi is the clearest starting point for most former Showbox users. It offers free, ad-supported movies and television, promotes no subscription fee or credit-card requirement, and lists apps for the web, Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation and selected smart TVs.
Its strength is on-demand browsing: search for a title, open a movie or episode and watch when you choose. Advertising and a rotating, market-specific catalog are the trade-offs. An account is useful for synchronization and watchlists, but availability and sign-in behavior can differ by device.
Pluto TV: best for a traditional-TV experience
Pluto TV combines scheduled, linear channels with an on-demand library. It suits viewers who prefer turning on a guide and browsing whatever is airing. The same service also provides selectable movies and shows, but a linear channel does not guarantee that a desired title is available at the moment you search for it. The U.S. lineup and account experience can change, so check the current service interface.
The Roku Channel: best for Roku users
Roku documents free movies, current-season episodes, classic programs and live-TV-style programming through its ecosystem at Roku Support. The Roku Channel offers both on-demand and live content with advertising and has the smoothest integration on Roku devices and Roku TVs. Web and non-Roku availability depends on current regional support, and some separately offered content may be paid or require an add-on.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Plex: free streaming with optional personal media
Plex provides a licensed, ad-supported catalog of movies, television and live channels across many devices. It also organizes media that you already own through a personal server. Installing Plex does not unlock every movie you want, and its free catalog is not a substitute for unauthorized files. Personal-media features can require additional setup, while the free streaming section is the simpler part of the service.
Prime Video’s free section: formerly associated with Freevee
Amazon has folded the Freevee-associated experience into the broader Prime Video environment. Selected movies and shows can be watched free with ads without necessarily paying for Prime, while rentals, purchases, paid channels and Prime-included titles appear in the same interface. Look for “free with ads” or equivalent labeling before pressing play. Provider pages at JustWatch still use Freevee terminology, so the name can be confusing. Amazon’s current storefront is Prime Video.
Kanopy: best ad-free option for eligible viewers
Kanopy offers ad-free films and series through participating public libraries and universities, using a library card or university login. Its collection is particularly useful for documentaries, independent and international cinema, classics and educational material. It is curated rather than a high-volume source of current blockbusters. Institutions may impose viewing-ticket or other local limits, so check your library’s rules.
Hoopla: library borrowing across formats
Hoopla lets patrons of participating libraries borrow movies and television alongside ebooks, audiobooks, comics and music. Access conditions and monthly borrowing allowances are set by each library. It is a strong supplement to Kanopy when your library supports both platforms, but it is not a universal service and should not be assumed to be ad-free in every circumstance.

YouTube’s free movies: useful but inconsistent
YouTube Movies includes officially licensed free films from studio and independent distributors. The selection is less centralized and predictable than a dedicated streaming app, and search results can mix free viewing, rentals, purchases, subscriptions and unofficial uploads. Use verified studio or distributor listings and the free category; JustWatch’s U.S. YouTube Free page is a useful directory.
Choose by viewing need
Movies and television on demand
Start with Tubi. Plex, Prime Video’s free section, Kanopy, Hoopla and YouTube Free add alternatives with different catalogs and eligibility rules.
Live channels and scheduled programming
Choose Pluto TV first, then The Roku Channel or Plex. These services use the FAST model: free ad-supported streaming television with scheduled linear channels. On-demand services such as Tubi let you select a title directly instead.
Documentaries and independent cinema
Kanopy is usually the strongest fit when a participating library or university provides access. Hoopla can broaden library borrowing, while Tubi and Plex offer ad-supported documentaries whose availability rotates.

Android, Fire TV and smart televisions
Install the official app from Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, Roku’s channel store or the television manufacturer’s supported store. Tubi lists broad device support on its official page; other platforms vary by country and model. Do not assume that an APK offered by a website is an official Android or Fire TV app.
One particular movie or show
Use JustWatch rather than installing multiple apps. Search the title at JustWatch U.S. Movies, filter for free or the equivalent price category, distinguish ad-supported, library, subscription, rental and purchase results, and confirm the listing on the provider’s own site. JustWatch is a guide, not the host of the stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding “free”
- Free with ads: Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex’s free catalog, YouTube Free and Amazon’s free section show advertising.
- Free through a library or university: Kanopy and Hoopla depend on institutional participation and local policies.
- Free inside a broader paid ecosystem: Prime Video mixes no-cost programming with Prime titles, rentals, purchases and channels.
- Paid services: Subscription platforms may offer newer releases or fewer interruptions, but they are not free Showbox replacements.
Safety and legality checklist
- Avoid “Showbox latest version” pages, modified APKs, fake download buttons and apps with unverifiable publishers.
- Do not disable device security protections or grant unrelated permissions merely to install a streaming app.
- Use official app stores and the service’s own domain; keep your operating system and apps updated.
- Never enter payment credentials into a clone site or a page that redirects through suspicious pop-ups.
- Expect malware, credential theft, browser-notification abuse, aggressive advertising and fraudulent redirects from unofficial installers.
- A VPN can help privacy on public Wi-Fi, but it does not legalize unauthorized streaming. It can also trigger captchas, location errors, verification requests, slower playback or regional-catalog problems.
Why a title may disappear
Streaming rights expire, catalogs rotate, countries receive different licenses and a movie can move from free viewing to a rental or subscription. Availability guides can also lag behind a provider. Recheck JustWatch, then open the provider’s own title page before signing up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Showbox still an official streaming service?
There is no reliable basis for treating the many current Showbox-branded websites as one verified official continuation. Historical reporting connected Showbox distribution sites with copyright disputes, and current clone sites’ security claims are unverified.

Is Tubi safer than a Showbox APK?
Tubi is a licensed service available through official apps and its own website, making it a lower-risk choice than unknown APK sites. No online service should be described as absolutely risk-free.
Can I use Kanopy without a library card?
Usually you need access through a participating public library or university. Eligibility and any viewing limits are set by the institution.
Is Plex completely free?
Plex’s ad-supported streaming catalog is free, while optional personal-media features and other products may involve additional setup or payment. Its free catalog is separate from media you organize yourself.
What should I do if a movie is unavailable everywhere free?
Check JustWatch for a current legal rental, purchase, subscription or library option. Free availability can change as licensing agreements expire.
