Kodi 21.2 “Omega” is a legitimate stable point release, published on January 19, 2025. It concentrates on bug fixes and compatibility rather than new features. It can normally be installed over Kodi 21.0 or 21.1, but it is no longer the newest Omega build: Kodi 21.3 followed it in December 2025. For a new installation in 2026, use the newest stable release compatible with your device; keep 21.2 when a tested add-on, device image, or troubleshooting guide specifically depends on it.

What Kodi 21.2 is
“21.2” is a maintenance release in the Kodi 21 “Omega” generation. It is not Kodi 22 and does not introduce a major interface redesign or add-on API transition. Its purpose is to correct regressions, improve platform compatibility, and stabilize playback, networking, PVR, and add-on behavior.
The official announcement describes a bug-fix release. The fixes are targeted: they can resolve a symptom listed below, but they do not guarantee that every library, server, HDR setup, skin, or third-party add-on will work.

The dates are listed in Kodi’s release history. Mirror metadata can show January 18 for 21.2 because publication and mirror time zones differ. Kodi’s later announcement is at kodi.tv/article/kodi-21-3-omega-release/.
What Kodi 21.2 changed
Library, sources, and playback
- Images in a
season.actorsfolder are no longer ignored. - Movie-library addition performance was brought closer to Kodi 20 “Nexus” levels in the affected regression area. Scan speed still depends on library size, storage, network shares, metadata providers, artwork, and add-ons.
- Playback from some UPnP servers, including UMS and Gerbera, was improved.
- Blu-ray menu items that could disappear because of multithreading timing were corrected.
- Video bookmarks are no longer incorrectly deleted when chapters are present.

Music
For some albums stored in MKA containers, Kodi 21.2 fixes incorrect or missing duration information for the final track.
Plug-ins and add-ons
Context-menu entries supplied by plug-ins were restored. Kodi also backported updated translation strings across binary add-ons, including audio, inputstream, peripheral, screensaver, virtual-filesystem, and visualization components.

This does not certify every community skin, repository, or streaming add-on. Those projects set their own Kodi-version and dependency requirements.
SMB and FTP
- On POSIX platforms, users can again enter credentials while browsing SMB shares.
- cURL was updated to 8.10.0 to address problems with FTP sources using TLS.
A server can still reject correct-looking credentials because of permissions, firewall rules, DNS, SMB protocol settings, account policy, or certificate and encryption configuration. Do not enable obsolete protocols or weaken security simply to accommodate an old server.
PVR and live television
The release fixes electronic-program-guide search, recording resume points that were not honored, “user has no access / server” errors after broadcasts shifted, and the default “show info” action for PVR items. Results still depend on the tuner, backend server, guide data, network, and PVR client add-on.
Android
- Joystick support was improved.
- A possible crash when
getInterfaceNamereturned null was fixed. - Paused playback can resume through a play/pause media-key press.
- A black screen when returning from a minimized state was addressed.
Phones, tablets, Android TV, Google TV, and Fire TV can use different packages, architectures, store channels, and rollout schedules. ARM and x86 builds are not interchangeable, and a store update can be delayed or staged.

Linux
- Memory corruption with high-quality video scalers was fixed.
- A possible infinite loop involving GBM and a failed DRM atomic commit was addressed.
- On Wayland, a windowed Kodi session should no longer grow larger at every start when display scaling is enabled.
Distribution repositories, Flatpak, Kodi-specific repositories, and media-center distributions such as LibreELEC publish on different schedules. Use the package source supported by your distribution rather than mixing packages casually.
Windows
- Crashes when accessing a computer through Remote Desktop Protocol were fixed.
- The built-in Wake-on-LAN feature was corrected when it failed to wake servers.
- A possible crash involving environment-variable names longer than 64 characters was addressed.
- HDR problems under some Windows 11 version 24H2 conditions were fixed.
- Support for wide-color-gamut displays on Windows 11 version 24H2 was improved.
These HDR changes are conditional; display, GPU, driver, Windows HDR settings, renderer settings, and source metadata can still prevent HDR output.
macOS
Kodi 21.2 fixes a crash that could occur while detecting optical media. This is a macOS fix and should not be generalized to every Apple platform.
Should you install 21.2 or 21.3?

There is no general reason to present 21.2 as the current latest version. Kodi’s release history identifies 21.3 as the later stable Omega point release.

- Back up userdata. Protect the library database, artwork, settings, skin configuration, and add-on data. The exact folder varies by operating system.
- Use an official channel. Download from kodi.tv/download/ or use the supported store or distribution repository. Avoid unofficial “fully loaded” packages, random APK mirrors, and pirated builds.
- Install over Kodi 21.x. Kodi generally supports an in-place update from an existing 21.x installation; uninstalling first is normally unnecessary.
- Launch and verify. Check the home screen, library, video and audio playback, passthrough, subtitles, network shares, PVR, skin, and essential add-ons.
- Isolate failures. If the problem remains, test with add-ons disabled or a clean profile. Restore the backup if the working setup is more important than the update.
A clean installation is appropriate for a corrupted profile, crashes before the home screen, incompatible leftover skin settings, or a deliberately clean test. It should not be the first step for a routine 21.1-to-21.2 update.
Windows crash warning: the Visual C++ runtime
Kodi warns that binary add-ons updated while Kodi or its Visual C++ runtime remains old can cause crashes. The 21.2 Windows installer includes the updated runtime. If you remain on 21.1, Kodi points to Microsoft’s Visual C++ redistributable.
- Close Kodi completely.
- Back up the userdata folder.
- Install the appropriate newer Kodi package over the current installation.
- Restart Kodi and confirm the runtime was updated.
- If crashes continue, disable third-party add-ons or switch temporarily to a clean profile.
- Re-enable add-ons one at a time to identify a conflict.
Other causes, including an incompatible skin, corrupted userdata, GPU drivers, and hardware acceleration, can survive a reinstall.
Platform-specific distribution notes
- Windows: Match the package to the Windows installation and use the official installer or Microsoft Store channel. Store timing can differ from direct downloads.
- Android: Confirm the device type and CPU architecture. Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV, phones, and tablets may receive packages through different channels.
- Linux: Check whether your distribution repository, Flatpak, Kodi repository, or LibreELEC image supplies the build. Do not assume one universal command.
- macOS: Use the macOS build appropriate to the hardware and keep the optical-media fix in context.
- Raspberry Pi and embedded systems: The Kodi release page does not prove that every operating-system image or third-party media-center distribution offers the same build immediately. Follow that image’s update channel or the official download page.
Troubleshooting after an update
SMB still fails
Recheck the username, password, server permissions, firewall, routing, DNS, SMB protocol policy, and NAS account restrictions. The 21.2 credential-entry fix does not override server-side policy.

HDR still does not work
Confirm the Windows 11 version, display and GPU capability, driver, Windows HDR setting, Kodi renderer configuration, and source metadata. The 21.2 fix covers particular 24H2 circumstances, not all HDR systems.
An add-on or skin stops working
Check its maintained repository for compatibility and dependencies, then update or replace it. Kodi’s binary-add-on updates do not make every third-party component compatible.
The update is missing
A staged store rollout, repository lag, architecture restriction, or operating-system policy can delay availability. Check the official Kodi channel for your platform rather than installing an unrelated package.
Library scanning remains slow
21.2 addresses a known regression, but metadata services, artwork, network storage, disk speed, library size, and add-ons still determine scan time.
Bottom line
Kodi 21.2 is genuine, stable, and useful for its targeted fixes, especially the Windows runtime and HDR-related corrections, Android resume and black-screen fixes, Linux display and DRM fixes, networking changes, and PVR repairs. It is not a feature overhaul and is not the latest Omega point release. Use 21.3 for a new installation when compatible; update an existing 21.x setup only after backing up userdata and checking the add-ons and platform channel that matter to you.
