5 TV settings to dramatically improve picture quality and gaming performance

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most televisions leave the factory in a showroom-friendly mode: bright, cool, saturated and heavily processed. Five reversible changes can make films look more natural, stop distracting brightness shifts and help a console or PC use the signal your TV actually supports. Menu names vary by brand, firmware, input and region, so make each change while viewing the source you want to improve. Picture settings commonly save separately for each HDMI input and for SDR and HDR; treat the recommendations below as starting points, not universal calibration values. RTINGS explains the input- and content-specific limitations.

1. Replace Vivid or Dynamic with an accurate picture mode

Choose Filmmaker Mode where available. Otherwise try Movie, Cinema, Professional, Custom or Expert. These presets generally reduce showroom-style saturation, edge enhancement and unnecessary processing. Filmmaker Mode is often the most accurate starting point, although it can look less bright and may restrict some controls.

Brand Modes to try
Samsung Movie or Filmmaker Mode
LG Filmmaker Mode, Cinema or ISF Expert
Sony Professional, Custom or Cinema
TCL/Hisense Movie, Theater, Cinema or Filmmaker Mode, depending on model

Use a warmer color temperature

Set Color Temperature to Warm, Warm 1, Warm 2 or the equivalent. Warm presets are usually closer to the reference white point used for mastering, while Cool often adds a conspicuous blue cast. It may look yellow for the first few minutes; that is an adaptation issue, not proof that the setting is wrong. Labels differ between manufacturers, and personal preference remains valid.

For a bright daytime room, a brighter preset can be practical. For films, judge the mode using skin tones, neutral whites and shadow detail rather than showroom impact. Do not copy exact calibration numbers from another TV: even units of the same model can vary. Model-specific examples such as LG Gallery 2026 and Sony X90L settings are documented by RTINGS for LG Gallery 2026 and the Sony X90L.

2. Turn motion interpolation down for films

Set motion interpolation to Off or its lowest level for movies and scripted series. Look for Motion Smoothing, Smoothness, Judder Reduction, Motionflow, TruMotion, Auto Motion Plus, Picture Clarity or Motion Clarity. High settings create the “soap-opera” appearance by inventing intermediate frames.

On supported Samsung TVs, the controls are under Settings → Picture → Expert Settings → Auto Motion Plus Settings/Picture Clarity Settings; choose Off or Custom. Samsung’s instructions describe the available options. Sony calls its system Motionflow and uses CineMotion for filmed 24-frame-per-second material; its help guide notes that availability varies by model, country and content.

When a little smoothing helps

  • Sports and live broadcasts: Low or Custom can reduce blur.
  • Movies: Off or minimum preserves the intended cadence, though slow pans may show native 24fps judder.
  • Gaming: Use Game Mode and VRR rather than heavy interpolation.

Black-frame insertion or a “Clearness” control is different from ordinary interpolation: it can reduce brightness and introduce flicker. A 120Hz panel also does not require motion smoothing to operate at 120Hz.

3. Disable brightness-changing eco features when consistency matters

Turn off or reduce Energy Saving, Eco Mode, Ambient Light Sensor, Auto Brightness, Adaptive Brightness, Eco Sensor and Automatic Contrast if the picture keeps dimming or changing during a program. On current Samsung models, the path is Settings → All Settings → General and Privacy → Power and Energy Saving → Energy Saving Solution. Samsung documents that menu; Tom’s Guide reports an immediate brightness change on some Samsung sets.

This is a consistency-versus-efficiency choice: disabling these controls can increase electricity use. Keep them enabled if lower power consumption, nighttime comfort or reduced light output is more important. OLEDs can also dim large bright scenes through panel-protection behavior; that is not necessarily an eco setting and cannot always be disabled safely.

4. Tune local dimming on LED and Mini-LED TVs

Local dimming applies mainly to LED, QLED, Mini-LED and full-array LCD televisions. It is not the same on OLED, whose pixels are individually emissive and have no conventional backlight. Start an LCD set at Medium or High, then watch a dark scene containing subtitles or small bright objects.

  • Dolby Atmos Audio: Advanced spatial audio processing can be found in movies, TV shows, and video games.
  • Keep the higher setting if blacks and HDR highlights improve without distracting artifacts.
  • Reduce it if you see halos, blooming, brightness pumping or lost shadow detail.
  • On inexpensive LCDs, High can look worse; the best setting is model-dependent.

Local dimming changes brightness in separate backlight zones to improve contrast. Sony describes Auto Local Dimming in its support documentation. Do not disable it automatically: removing it can make an LCD’s contrast substantially worse. On OLED, investigate OLED/Panel Brightness, Peak Brightness, tone-mapping and panel-protection controls instead.

5. Enable enhanced HDMI for consoles and PCs

For the HDMI input connected to a console, graphics card or 4K streaming device, enable the TV’s high-bandwidth or enhanced signal format. Names include Samsung Input Signal Plus, LG HDMI Deep Color or 4K Deep Color, Sony Enhanced Format, and TCL/Hisense Enhanced, HDMI 2.1 Mode or HDMI Signal Format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the device and identify the exact HDMI input.
  2. Open that input’s HDMI, External Devices, Inputs or General settings and enable Enhanced/high-bandwidth mode.
  3. On the console or PC, verify 4K, HDR, 120Hz, VRR and the desired color format.
  4. Enable Game Mode or Game Optimizer; use ALLM and VRR where supported.
  5. Restart the source if the signal does not renegotiate.

Enhanced mode cannot create capabilities absent from the TV, source or cable. Ports may differ: for example, Sony’s X90L documentation identifies HDMI 3 and 4 as HDMI 2.1-capable while HDMI 1 and 2 are HDMI 2.0. Its Dolby Vision-specific enhanced option can restrict 4K to 60Hz. See the X90L port and format examples.

Sony recommends Game Mode for low input lag and Graphics or Game Mode for clear PC text and 4:4:4 chroma. LG’s Game Optimizer guidance covers ALLM and VRR controls.

Controls to leave alone until you have a specific problem

Brightness, black level and panel light

Do not enter a universal “Brightness” number. On many TVs, Brightness or Black Level sets the video black point, while Backlight, Panel Brightness or OLED Pixel Brightness controls overall light output. Too low a black level crushes shadow detail; too high makes blacks gray. Restore defaults unless a test pattern or source mismatch demonstrates a problem. RTINGS’ calibration guide explains the distinction.

Sharpness and noise reduction

Extra Sharpness can add halos and ringing rather than detail. Leave it near the neutral point for high-quality HD and 4K; mild processing may help genuinely soft or compressed material. Noise reduction and Reality Creation can remove fine detail, so evaluate them from normal viewing distance. Sony defines these controls in its picture help guide.

Dynamic contrast and HDR tone mapping

Dynamic Contrast and Dynamic Tone Mapping are preference controls, not universal errors. Off is usually the accuracy-oriented SDR choice. In HDR, tone mapping can make highlights look brighter while departing from the intended curve; LG’s accuracy-focused example uses Dynamic Tone Mapping Off but notes that On can improve perceived brightness in some scenes.

Use this quick checklist

Films and series

  • Filmmaker, Movie, Cinema or Professional mode.
  • Warm color temperature.
  • Motion interpolation Off or minimum.
  • Eco and ambient-brightness controls Off if they fluctuate.
  • Medium/High local dimming on capable LCDs, adjusted for blooming.

Console and PC gaming

  • Game Mode/Game Optimizer.
  • Enhanced HDMI on the correct input.
  • 4K, HDR, 120Hz and VRR confirmed on the device.
  • ALLM enabled where available.
  • Correct HDMI 2.1 port and certified cable.

How to compare safely and recover

Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene. Check skin tones, dark shadow detail, bright highlights, slow pans, subtitles over black, a fast game scene and small PC text. Do not judge from a phone photograph: camera exposure and white balance make before-and-after images unreliable.

  • Too dark: raise Backlight, Panel Brightness or OLED Pixel Brightness, not Black Level. A brighter preset may suit daytime viewing.
  • Gray blacks or missing shadows: restore Black Level, then check matching Limited/Full RGB range on the source and TV. Sony lists HDMI video range among its controls.
  • HDR or 120Hz missing: verify the port, Enhanced mode, cable and source settings; restart the device. Avoid a Dolby Vision-specific mode when high-frame-rate gaming requires 4K/120Hz.
  • Motion looks worse with smoothing Off: try Low judder reduction or the TV’s film mode, and reserve a different preset for sports. Native 24fps judder is not necessarily a fault.

Try these free adjustments before buying equipment. Measurement-based calibration with software such as Calman Home, a colorimeter such as the ColorChecker Display Plus or a test disc such as Spears & Munsil UHD HDR Benchmark is for enthusiasts. A new TV is warranted only when hardware limits—panel contrast, brightness, blooming, architecture or HDMI bandwidth—are the real constraint. For 4K/120Hz problems, use a properly certified cable; certification information is available from HDMI.org.
