Short answer: YouTube Premium is worth about $15.99 a month for people who watch YouTube daily, listen with their phone locked, download videos for travel, or want YouTube Music included. It is usually a poor deal for occasional viewers who tolerate ads or already have Spotify or Apple Music and do not need YouTube’s video benefits. U.S. prices and plan availability can change, so confirm the amount shown in your account before subscribing.
What YouTube Premium includes
YouTube Premium is the broad YouTube subscription, not merely an ad-removal switch. Google lists these core benefits across supported accounts and apps:
- Most YouTube-served ads are removed from ordinary videos.
- Videos, music and podcasts can continue playing in the background on supported mobile apps.
- Eligible videos and music can be downloaded for offline use.
- YouTube Music Premium is included.
- Some playback features, including picture-in-picture for eligible content, are available.
- Supported YouTube Kids viewing receives Premium benefits where the service is available.

What “ad-free” does—and does not—mean
Premium removes most ads that YouTube serves around standard videos. It does not erase every promotional message. You may still encounter:

Google documents these exceptions at YouTube’s Premium and Music Premium help page. Therefore, “removes YouTube-served ads from most standard viewing” is more accurate than “zero ads everywhere.”
Background playback turns YouTube into an audio app
Background play lets supported content continue when you lock your phone, switch apps or do another task. It works in the YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids mobile apps where the benefit is available. That makes a long interview, lecture, documentary, podcast or ambient video practical to hear with the display off—without keeping the screen awake.
Offline downloads are app-based access, not permanent files
Premium lets you download eligible content in the relevant YouTube apps for flights, subway journeys, weak-connectivity areas and mobile-data savings. Downloads are controlled by YouTube: they are not DRM-free video files, and access depends on the membership, account, app and YouTube’s download rules. Check your downloads before traveling rather than assuming they remain available indefinitely.

YouTube Premium vs. YouTube Music Premium vs. Premium Lite

Premium already includes YouTube Music Premium, so buying both is generally unnecessary. Google’s plan information is at the plan overview and its duplicate-subscription guidance. Podcasts can still contain creator-inserted branding or promotions even for Music Premium members.

Is YouTube Music a Spotify or Apple Music replacement?
There is no universal winner; the useful comparison is how you listen. YouTube Music is especially compelling if you want official albums alongside music videos, live performances, remixes, covers, DJ sets and other YouTube-native uploads. That mix is different from comparing only the number of licensed songs.
Spotify may suit listeners who prioritize established playlist and social-discovery tools, a dedicated music-service workflow, or Spotify’s Duo and Family structures. Its U.S. plan page lists Individual, Student, Duo and Family options, including two-person Duo and up to six Family accounts: Spotify Premium. Promotional prices on that page are temporary, so do not treat them as a permanent like-for-like comparison.

U.S. prices and plan choices in 2026
Technology outlets reported these U.S. price signals after April 2026 notices. Google does not publish one universal public price table; country, account, offer and billing channel can change the amount. Confirm the checkout screen at youtube.com/premium/inapp.

The increases from earlier reported U.S. prices were covered by TechCrunch. Billing through Apple or Google Play can display a different amount and changes where you cancel; direct YouTube billing is managed separately.

Family
Family supports up to six household members. At $26.99, six fully used seats work out to about $4.50 each, while three seats work out to about $9.00 each; these are simple divisions, not separate official prices. Members must live with the family manager, and household verification can pause access. Do not share with unrelated people at other addresses. See Google’s family requirements.
Two-person
A two-person option exists in some markets for two people in the same household. It is not universally offered, so check the account-specific plan page.
Student
Approved higher-education students can apply through SheerID, may need to upload documentation and must re-verify annually. Eligibility can continue for up to four consecutive years. Start at the student signup page; details are in Google’s student help.

Annual or prepaid
The individual annual plan is paid upfront, does not recur, is available in the United States and selected other countries, and can hold up to 24 months of prepaid access. There is no family annual plan. It generally cannot be paused or refunded, and an existing subscriber may need to cancel before switching. Do not assume it saves money until you compare its current price with 12 monthly payments. Use the annual signup path and read the annual-plan rules.

- Daily viewers: Frequent ad interruption makes the individual fee easier to justify.
- Commuters and travelers: Background playback and downloads are useful on trains, flights and unreliable connections.
- Podcast, lecture and documentary listeners: Screen-off playback extends beyond music.
- Music listeners: Premium can replace a separate music bill if YouTube Music’s discovery and content mix suits you.
- Students: The verified discounted plan is materially easier to justify than the standard rate.
- Households: A legitimately used family plan lowers the effective cost per person.
Who should skip it?
- Occasional viewers who do not mind ads.
- People who rarely use mobile playback, downloads or background listening.
- Spotify or Apple Music subscribers who do not need YouTube’s ad-free video experience.
- Anyone seeking a Netflix-style television and movie catalog; Premium is not that service.
- People wanting permanent ownership of downloaded videos.
- Intended family-plan members who live in different households.
How to decide in four questions
- How often do you watch YouTube? Daily use produces more value than occasional viewing.
- Will you use background playback or downloads? If not, two major mobile benefits go unused.
- Would you otherwise pay for music? Count Premium as a replacement only if YouTube Music fits your listening habits.
- Can you use a household plan legitimately? Sharing only works when members meet Google’s household requirement.
How to sign up, try and cancel
Sign up
- Open youtube.com/premium/inapp.
- Sign in to the Google Account that should receive the benefits.
- Select an eligible trial or Get YouTube Premium.
- Choose a payment method and complete checkout.
The membership follows that Google Account on supported devices where you sign in.
Trials
A payment method is normally required, and the trial renews automatically at the current recurring price unless canceled. Length and eligibility are account-specific; Google says introductory trials may target first-time members or people who canceled at least six months earlier, with only one introductory trial allowed in a 12-month period. Set a reminder several days before the end, record the renewal price, and cancel through the same billing channel. Canceling does not necessarily end benefits immediately; Google says trial benefits generally continue until the trial period ends. See trial terms.
Cancel
Manage a YouTube-billed plan in YouTube’s paid-membership or purchases area. Google Play subscriptions are canceled in Google Play; Apple-billed subscriptions are canceled through Apple. Cancellation normally stops the next renewal while access continues through the paid period; confirm the displayed end date.
Common problems and fixes
- Ads still appear: Check for a live event, Primetime Channel, podcast promotion or creator sponsorship, and confirm you are signed into the subscribing account. See Google’s exceptions.
- Family access pauses: YouTube may be unable to verify that a member lives with the family manager; review household requirements.
- Student signup fails: The institution may not be SheerID-approved, enrollment may be unverifiable, or re-verification may have expired. Use the student help page.
- Annual plan is unavailable: The country may not be supported, an active membership may block switching, or the requested plan may be multi-person. Check annual-plan eligibility.
- Price is unexpected: Apple or Google Play billing, a location-specific price or an account promotion may be responsible.
- Downloads fail: The video may be ineligible, storage may be full, the device may have been offline too long, or membership status may have changed.
- Trial charged: The membership renewed because it was not canceled before the displayed renewal date.
- Workspace account issue: Some Workspace accounts cannot use individual or family signup; Google recommends a personal account unless the Workspace edition is eligible.
Verdict
Choose YouTube Premium when YouTube itself is a daily video-and-audio habit: the combination of fewer YouTube-served ads, screen-off playback, offline access and YouTube Music is the product’s real value. Choose YouTube Music Premium alone when music is all you need. Choose Premium Lite only after checking that its market-specific exclusions do not remove the feature you want. Keep free YouTube if you watch casually, and favor Spotify or Apple Music when dedicated music discovery and playlists matter more than YouTube video access.
