The 2021 Kindle Paperwhite remains an excellent book reader when its price is clearly below the current model. Its 6.8-inch, 300-ppi E Ink screen, adjustable warm light, USB-C charging, long battery life and IPX8 water resistance still cover the needs of most novel readers. It is not, however, the fastest or newest Paperwhite: Amazon’s 2024 model has newer hardware, a 7-inch display and a longer claimed battery life.

That makes this a value-focused recommendation rather than a blanket “best Kindle” verdict. Buy the 2021 Paperwhite discounted, refurbished or used in excellent condition; choose the 2024 Paperwhite when the price gap is small; and keep your 2021 model if it still works well.

At a glance

Best for Novel readers wanting a large monochrome screen, warm light and water resistance at a reduced price
Not ideal for Color content, handwriting, serious PDF work, rapid scrolling or physical page-turn buttons
Main strengths 6.8-inch 300-ppi display, warm light, IPX8 rating, USB-C, strong battery life and Kindle ecosystem
Main weaknesses Manual brightness, occasional menu lag, flush-screen reflections, plastic construction and no page-turn buttons
2026 buying advice Buy only when meaningfully cheaper than the 2024 Paperwhite
Upgrade advice Existing 11th-generation owners generally do not need to upgrade solely for a newer model

The 2021 Paperwhite was announced on September 21, 2021, with shipping beginning October 27. Amazon’s launch announcement lists the core specifications and the separate Signature Edition features: Amazon’s announcement.

What exactly is the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite?

This is commonly called the 11th-generation Kindle Paperwhite and, in some naming schemes, the fifth-generation Paperwhite. The standard model launched with 8GB; Amazon later offered a 16GB version. The Paperwhite Signature Edition is a related but distinct device with 32GB, automatic brightness adjustment and wireless charging. Kindle Paperwhite Kids uses the same general hardware family with child-focused extras.

  • Broad Device Compatibility: This page turner is designed to work seamlessly with most capacitive touchscreen e-readers and smart devices, providing flexible use across different reading platforms. It supports Kindle series (Paperwhite, Oasis, Scribe, Voyage, Kids Edition), iPad, iPhone, Android tablets, Microsoft Surface, and Kobo e-readers. Please note that it is not compatible with Kindle 7th/8th Generation or Amazon Fire HD 10 (10th and 11th Generation).
  • Quiet Operation and Extended Battery Performance: Designed with soft silicone buttons, this page turner provides a quiet and smooth clicking experience, making it suitable for nighttime reading or use in silent environments without disturbing others.Equipped with USB C fast charging, the device fully charges in about 1.5 hours and supports weeks of use on a single charge. • 2 in 1 Wireless Camera Remote Shutter: This device also functions as a wireless camera remote shutter for smartphones. It allows you to take selfies, group photos, and videos without assistance. Ideal for travel, vlogging, and outdoor photography, providing easy hands-free control anytime.

Do not assume that a standard Paperwhite has the Signature Edition’s light sensor or wireless charging. Those features are documented separately in Amazon’s launch details.

Design and handling

The reader weighs about 205 grams and measures approximately 174.2 Ă— 124.6 Ă— 8.1 millimeters. It has a black plastic rear, a flush-front screen, a bottom-mounted power button and USB-C port. The bezels provide a useful grip, and the matte back is easier to hold than a glossy tablet.

There are no physical page-turn buttons: tapping or swiping the touchscreen advances the book. That keeps the sides uncluttered but is a real disadvantage for readers who want tactile controls. The flush display looks modern, although its top layer can reflect more light than a recessed screen. At 205 grams it is comfortable for many reading sessions, but it is not the lightest Kindle.

Display and warm light

The 6.8-inch glare-free E Ink panel runs at 300 pixels per inch, displays 16 levels of grayscale and has a flush front. Text is crisp, outdoor readability is strong, and the larger area is a noticeable improvement over the 6-inch 2018 Paperwhite. It remains a black-and-white display: color covers, magazines and illustrations are rendered in grayscale.

A slider changes the front light from cool white to warmer amber. That is useful in bed or when matching the room’s lighting, and many readers prefer the less bluish appearance. It is a comfort preference, not a clinically established treatment for eye strain or sleep. Dark mode is also available.

On the standard model, both brightness and warmth are adjusted manually. Automatic brightness belongs to the Signature Edition, as noted in TechRadar’s review.

  • Secure Clip & Responsive Control: Designed with a stable, non-slip clip that stays firmly in place without damaging your screen. Enjoy fast, accurate page turning every time for a smooth reading experience.

Reading and software experience

For books, Kindle’s software remains the main attraction. You can change font family and size, margins and line spacing; look up words in the dictionary; use X-Ray where a title supports it; organize the library with filters and collections; and synchronize progress through Whispersync across Kindle devices and apps. Kindle Store integration is convenient, and Bluetooth supports Audible playback for compatible titles and markets.

Page turns are faster than on older Paperwhites. Amazon claimed a 20 percent improvement over the previous generation, while reviewers found the difference noticeable. That is not the same as tablet-like speed: E Ink refreshes remain visible, and opening books, scrolling lists and navigating menus can still feel slow. WIRED reported occasional lag and screen flashes during menu use: WIRED’s review.

The trade-off is a relatively closed ecosystem. Sideloading is possible, but obtaining and managing books from outside Amazon is less direct than on more open e-readers. The Paperwhite is a poor substitute for a tablet when you need a web browser, interactive books, handwriting, rich annotations or fast-moving content.

Battery, USB-C and water resistance

Amazon rates the battery for up to 10 weeks, based on about 30 minutes of reading per day, wireless turned off and the light at level 13. That is a controlled manufacturer estimate, not a normal result for intensive reading. Higher brightness or warmth, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Audible playback all reduce endurance. The conditions are listed on Amazon’s product specification page.

Charging uses USB-C. Amazon’s launch material says a full charge takes about 2.5 hours with a 9W adapter or larger; the standard package includes the cable, not a wall charger. Actual time depends on the charger and the battery’s state.

The IPX8 rating is designed for accidental immersion and reading around a bath, pool or ocean. It is not permission for deliberate underwater use, and testing does not guarantee protection from saltwater, chlorine, soap or impact. On a used unit, drops, repairs, aging seals and battery wear mean the original rating is not proof that the individual device remains watertight.

Storage and different kinds of content

Eight gigabytes is generally sufficient for novels. Storage matters more when your library includes Audible downloads, manga, comics, illustrated books or large PDFs. File sizes vary widely, so a book-count promise is not meaningful. Choose 16GB if you regularly keep graphic or audio content offline; the 32GB Signature Edition is aimed at heavier libraries.

The 6.8-inch monochrome screen is workable for simple, reflowable documents but frustrating for complex PDFs, textbooks, charts and technical layouts. Zooming and panning are slow, and pages designed for large paper remain difficult to read. If writing, handwriting or serious document review is central to your use, a larger device such as Kindle Scribe is a better match.

How it compares with alternatives

Device What you get Who should choose it
Paperwhite 2021 6.8-inch, 300-ppi monochrome E Ink; warm light; IPX8; USB-C; 8GB at launch or later 16GB Readers finding a substantial discount or good used price
Paperwhite 2024 7-inch display, newer hardware, claimed battery life up to 12 weeks and current-generation availability New buyers when the price gap is small, or anyone prioritizing speed
Current basic Kindle Smaller, lighter and less expensive; current model is not waterproof and is rated for up to six weeks Budget and indoor readers who do not need warm light or water resistance
Paperwhite Signature Edition (2021) 32GB, automatic brightness and wireless charging; core reading experience is otherwise similar Users with large audio/comic libraries or a modest premium for convenience
Kindle Colorsoft Color display for covers, children’s books and illustrations Readers for whom color matters more than the sharpest monochrome text
Kindle Scribe Large writing-capable screen for notes and documents PDF-heavy work, handwriting and annotation rather than compact reading

Current-model specifications and observed prices change by country and promotion. TechRadar’s comparison lists the 2024 Paperwhite at a $159.99 US list price, with a $124.99 sale price at the time of its update, and the basic Kindle at a $109.99 list price. Check the live listing before buying: TechRadar’s current comparison. The 2024 Paperwhite’s upgrade implications are discussed in TechRadar’s Kindle guide.

Is it an upgrade over the 2018 Paperwhite?

For a 2018 owner, this is a meaningful hardware refresh: the screen grows from 6 to 6.8 inches, warm light is added, USB-C replaces Micro-USB, the claimed battery life increases, page turns improve and the interface is newer. The upgrade is less compelling if you read occasionally, are happy with cool lighting and Micro-USB, and do not need a larger display or water resistance.

Who should buy the 2021 Paperwhite?

First-time buyers

Choose it when the price is clearly below the current Paperwhite and you want warm light, waterproofing and a larger screen. A basic Kindle is better if minimum weight and minimum cost matter more.

Basic Kindle owners

The larger screen, warm light, longer claimed endurance and IPX8 protection justify the move for long reading sessions, night reading or poolside use.

Existing 2021 owners

Keep the device if the battery and screen are healthy. The 2024 model is faster and slightly larger, but current buying guidance does not identify a working 11th-generation Paperwhite as an urgent upgrade.

Night, travel and water-side readers

Warm light, dark mode, USB-C and the compact waterproof design make it especially practical for bedsides, flights and holidays. Treat used units cautiously around water because seal condition cannot be verified from the model name.

Audiobook, manga and comic readers

Bluetooth and Kindle software support Audible in compatible markets, but 8GB fills sooner with audio and graphic files. Prefer 16GB or 32GB when the price difference is reasonable.

PDF-heavy readers

Do not buy it as a document workstation. Choose a larger writing-capable reader or tablet for textbooks, technical PDFs, charts and annotation.

What to check when buying used

  1. Generation and storage: verify that the listing identifies the 2021 11th-generation model, not the 2018 Paperwhite.
  2. Screen: display a white page and a dark page to look for dead pixels, bright spots, lines, uneven lighting and persistent ghosting.
  3. Touch: swipe and tap across the entire panel, especially near the edges.
  4. USB-C: ensure the cable fits securely and charging starts reliably.
  5. Battery: ask how quickly it loses charge during ordinary reading; “up to 10 weeks” is not a used-device guarantee.
  6. Water history: do not assume an older or dropped unit is still sealed to IPX8.
  7. Account: confirm the previous owner deregistered it.
  8. Lock-screen advertising: check whether sponsored screens are present and whether removal is available in your market.
  9. Cover fit: verify that any case is made for the 6.8-inch 2021 design.

Final verdict

The 2021 Kindle Paperwhite is still a very good dedicated e-reader, but its value is now price-dependent. Buy new only when it is meaningfully discounted below the 2024 Paperwhite. A clean refurbished or used unit can be an excellent bargain if its battery, screen, port and account status check out. Choose the 2024 model when the prices are close or you want the fastest current hardware. If you already own the 11th-generation Paperwhite and it works properly, there is no compelling need to replace it simply because a newer Paperwhite exists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the standard 2021 Paperwhite have automatic brightness?

No. Brightness and warm-light intensity are adjusted manually. Automatic brightness is a Signature Edition feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the 2021 Paperwhite replace a tablet for PDFs?

No. Its monochrome 6.8-inch screen is best for reflowable books; complex PDFs, textbooks, charts and handwriting are better on a larger device.

Is a used 2021 Paperwhite still waterproof?

The model is IPX8-rated, but an individual used device may have compromised seals after drops, repairs or age. Treat water resistance as uncertain.
