Frinkiac is a fan-made search engine that matches The Simpsons dialogue with corresponding video frames. Type a remembered line, open the matching scene, and turn it into a captioned still, GIF, or multi-panel comic. A major rebuild described by the creators on May 4, 2026 expanded the archive, search system, browsing tools, and editors.
What is Frinkiac?
Frinkiac is a quote and scene-search tool, not a general image search engine. It indexes subtitle dialogue, associates that text with frames extracted from episodes, and lets users browse, caption, animate, and share the results. It is useful for finding a half-remembered exchange, checking the visual context around a line, or making a Simpsons reaction image without installing editing software.

The project is unofficial and fan-made, not a product presented by Fox, Disney, or The Simpsons production team. The creators first announced it publicly on February 2, 2016, with nearly three million screenshots from seasons 1–15. Seasons 16 and 17 were added later. Those early descriptions explain Frinkiac’s origins, but they no longer describe its reported current coverage.

How Frinkiac connects a quote to a screenshot
Frinkiac does not understand an episode like a human viewer or search by plot synopsis. Its central link is subtitle timing:

- Subtitle text and timecodes are extracted.
- Subtitle lines are associated with frames from the corresponding point in the episode.
- Your search terms are matched against the indexed dialogue.
- Nearby or nearly identical results are ranked and deduplicated so a common phrase is easier to browse.
The original implementation divided scenes into 100 equal-sized buckets, compared average frame colors, and saved frames when the visual difference crossed a threshold. Subtitle timecodes were then correlated with those selected images. The original technical explanation is documented by the creator at the 2016 launch post.
The 2026 rebuild uses PostgreSQL full-text search with linguistic stemming, relevance ranking, neighboring-subtitle context, and deduplication. Broad matching improves recall, while results containing all of the query terms receive stronger ranking. The creator also described re-extracting subtitles to correct timing offsets. That improves alignment, but it cannot guarantee that every subtitle appears over the exact facial expression you remember. The 2026 post says the search indexes were changed from GIN to RUM indexes on May 4, 2026; that is an implementation detail rather than a user setting.
How to find a Simpsons scene by quote
- Open Frinkiac.
- Enter an exact line, a distinctive phrase, or one memorable word.
- Submit the search and compare the result thumbnails, subtitle overlays, and episode labels.
- Open the closest result. Use the filmstrip to scrub nearby frames or move frame by frame.
- Read the surrounding transcript, which the creators describe as covering roughly 30 seconds on either side of the selected point.
- Use season filters when a broad query produces too many matches.
- Choose a still, GIF, or comic, then share or copy the resulting URL or embed code.
For a reliable search, start with the most distinctive word, add a second or third word from the same exchange, and try a shorter fragment if the full sentence fails. Inspect several adjacent frames rather than assuming the first result is the best one. The interface described in the 2026 update also includes season pills, classic-season presets, saved ranges, local search history, Favorites, Recent Creations, and keyboard shortcuts including /, arrow keys, Enter, Escape, Space, and ?. Labels and layout can change as the site is updated.
What Frinkiac searches well
- Exact or nearly exact dialogue.
- Distinctive words or short fragments.
- Several words from one exchange.
- Phrases that cross a subtitle boundary, where neighboring-subtitle context can help.
What it does not primarily search
- Visual descriptions such as “Homer eating a doughnut.”
- Plot summaries such as “the episode where Homer goes to space.”
- Character names by themselves.
- Nonverbal moments with little or no dialogue.
Make a Simpsons meme or still image
Select a representative frame and open the image editor. The current creator-described workflow supports text overlays with adjustable font, size, color, and alignment, plus direct dragging on the canvas. You can create a single-panel captioned image, copy its URL, or use browser and device sharing tools. The newer editor is more capable than the original single-image “Meme It” workflow described in 2016.

Make a GIF
A GIF uses a short sequence around the selected moment rather than one still. The 2026 editor is described as a timeline with a filmstrip, trim handles, a draggable playhead, frame-by-frame scrubbing, play/pause controls, automatically prepopulated subtitle overlays, smart loop detection, and undo and redo. The finished animation has a shareable result page with social-preview metadata.
Trim tightly around the reaction or exchange you need. Output quality, file size, and behavior on mobile can vary by browser and device, so preview the result before posting it.
Build a multi-panel comic
The 2026 rebuild adds a comic builder rather than limiting users to one captioned frame. You can select frames from any episode and, when starting from a multi-line caption, create one panel per subtitle line. Layouts include horizontal, vertical, grid, and single-panel formats.
- Drag panels into a new order.
- Use a separate filmstrip for each panel.
- Add multiple text overlays to a panel.
- Adjust each overlay’s font, size, color, and alignment.
- Use multi-select editing, undo, and redo.
- Share an unfinished composition through URL-serialized editor state and restore it later.
A comic can also be collapsed back into a single-panel layout when that better suits the output.

What episodes and seasons does Frinkiac cover?
In a May 4, 2026 modernization post, the creators reported 4,990,964 frames across 802 episodes and the movie, with every episode available for browsing and filtering. Treat those figures as a dated creator-reported snapshot, not a permanent specification: the database and interface may change.

The creator says the new frames were re-extracted at higher resolution than the original 640×480 material, but the cited update does not specify a replacement resolution.
Why a remembered quote may not appear
- Your wording may be a paraphrase. Try a shorter fragment or alternate wording.
- Subtitle text may differ. Contractions, spelling, punctuation, or transcription choices can change the indexed phrase.
- The line may cross captions. Search one distinctive word at a time, then inspect the surrounding transcript.
- The scene may be mostly visual. Frinkiac depends on dialogue, so a silent gag may have little searchable text.
- The quote may come from another version. A dub, translation, or online transcript can use different wording.
- A common word creates noise. Add two or three distinctive terms and filter by season.
- The frame may not be perfectly timed. Subtitle offsets and editing rhythm mean the most expressive nearby frame can be just before or after the indexed one.
Visual search by describing an image is not a normal available feature: the creator described that project as unfinished and disabled behind a feature flag.
Is Frinkiac official, and can you use its images?
Frinkiac should be treated as an unofficial fan project. The available creator material does not establish a license from Disney, Fox, or the rights holders to reproduce the show’s frames, dialogue, characters, or branding.
Whether a particular meme, GIF, repost, or commercial use is lawful depends on facts including purpose, transformation, amount used, market effect, distribution, and jurisdiction. Fair-use analysis is not an automatic exemption for every fan creation. If you plan to use an output in advertising, merchandise, a monetized channel, or other business activity, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer and consider permission from the relevant rights holders.

The creator’s 2026 description says Favorites, search history, and Recent Creations are stored client-side with localStorage and require no account. The core search and creation workflow is therefore described as account-free, although a live site’s sign-in or sharing requirements can change.
The rebuild includes controls designed to wrap on mobile and a compact mobile transcript. Editors remain interactive applications, so desktop and mobile browsers may differ in available space and behavior. The creators also said the service was being run in-house with a Cloudflare-connected CDN and cautioned that this arrangement could be less highly available in some respects. Do not treat Frinkiac as guaranteed-on-demand infrastructure.

Morbotron applies the same dialogue-to-screenshot idea to Futurama, making it the natural choice when the remembered line is from that series.

Image search can be useful for finding an already-published meme or promotional still, but it is less structured for locating a specific spoken line.
Manual capture
If the moment has no dialogue, is missing from the archive, or must come from a particular version, manual capture from video you are legitimately allowed to access gives you more control. It requires separate editing tools and does not remove copyright considerations.
