Eligible Premium listeners in supported markets can switch between them from DJ’s own settings. “Bilingual” means selectable English and Spanish DJ modes—not necessarily one session that automatically code-switches between languages.
What changed with Spotify’s bilingual DJ?
Spotify’s underlying product is still DJ (beta): a personalized listening experience that combines music selections with spoken commentary. Spotify added a Spanish voice and language option rather than creating a separate recommendation system.

Spotify announced Livi on July 17, 2024, describing Quiroz Roa as a Spotify music editor based in Mexico City. The company said it developed the voice with Mexican identity and dialect in mind while incorporating feedback from Spanish-speaking listeners. See Spotify’s announcement at Spotify Newsroom.
The voices are modeled on real people; that does not mean those employees personally narrate every recommendation. Spotify’s system generates the spoken presentation around each listener’s personalized session.

Is Spotify DJ really bilingual?
It is bilingual in the practical sense that eligible users can choose English or Spanish for DJ. Spotify’s support documentation presents the choices as separate settings: English – DJ X or Spanish (Mexico) – DJ Livi (Spotify Support).
That setting should not be read as a promise of seamless bilingual conversation. It controls DJ’s spoken language and voice; it does not necessarily translate every song title, artist name, recommendation label, playlist, or other Spotify interface text. Music metadata generally remains as officially supplied by the rights holder.
What does “Spanish (Mexico)” mean?
Livi is not documented as a neutral Spanish voice or as a menu of regional dialects. The current control is specifically labeled Spanish (Mexico). Spotify’s launch materials emphasized Livi’s Mexican identity and dialect, so listeners elsewhere may hear a regionally marked voice rather than a version tailored automatically to their country.

There is no documented selector for separate Castilian, Caribbean, Central American, or South American Spanish voices. Spotify also has not promised that Livi dynamically changes dialect according to a listener’s account region.

How to start Spotify DJ
The most dependable route is through Search, although Spotify’s placement can vary by app version, platform, and account.
- Open the Spotify mobile app.
- Tap Search and enter DJ.
- Open the result labeled DJ and start listening.
Depending on your account, you may also see DJ on the Home page or a DJ button in the Now Playing bar. During a session, a DJ control or Switch it up option may let you move to a different mood or group of recommendations. Spotify’s current instructions are at Spotify Support.

How to switch from DJ X to DJ Livi
- Open a DJ session.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the DJ card. On iOS the dots are horizontal; on Android they are vertical.
- Choose DJ language.
- Select Spanish (Mexico) – DJ Livi or English – DJ X.
This changes DJ’s language and voice, not the language of the entire Spotify app. Menus, device settings, playlist names, and catalog metadata may remain unchanged.
Can you speak or type requests to DJ?
Spotify’s documented DJ controls can include:
- A text box for typing a request.
- A microphone button for speaking a request.
- Suggested requests supplied in the DJ interface.
- A DJ control for changing the session’s mood or direction.
The selected voice and the language of your request are separate concerns. A listener can choose Livi, type or speak a request, and still receive music whose titles and artist names remain untranslated. Results depend on listening history, Spotify’s personalization systems, catalog availability, and the wording of the request. Because DJ remains a beta experience, controls and behavior can differ between accounts and may change.
Who can use DJ Livi?
Spanish DJ launched for Spotify Premium listeners in markets where DJ was available. The initial rollout included Spain and selected Latin American markets: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

That launch list is not a guarantee of current access in every country. Spotify’s May 7, 2026 update said DJ had expanded to more than 75 markets and added French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese voices. Livi and X are therefore the original Spanish and English choices, not Spotify’s only DJ voices globally. See Spotify’s 2026 expansion announcement.
Premium eligibility is still necessary, but it is not sufficient by itself: market availability, account rollout, app version, and platform can affect whether DJ appears. Spotify lists DJ among Premium features in the United States at spotify.com/us/premium.

Use this practical sequence:
- Confirm that the account has an eligible Premium plan.
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Search for DJ exactly; searching for “AI DJ,” “Livi,” or “X” may not surface the feature.
- Close and reopen Spotify.
- Sign out and sign back in if DJ is still absent.
- Check whether the account’s country or region is supported.
- Try the mobile app, where Spotify documents the controls.
Changing Spotify’s general app-language setting will not necessarily activate Livi, because DJ language is configured inside the DJ experience. These steps are troubleshooting suggestions, not guarantees of access where Spotify has not enabled the feature.

What DJ is—and what it is not
DJ is designed for discovery and hands-off listening. Spotify says it can combine favorites, songs you have not heard in a while, and new releases, then introduce them with commentary. That makes it useful when you want a changing, mood-based session without building a queue manually.
- Good fit: passive discovery, personalized mixes, and Spanish commentary from Livi.
- Less suitable: listeners who need exact sequencing, dislike spoken interruptions, or want a fully manual playlist.
- Important limitation: “AI” does not mean DJ can play every requested track, understand every prompt perfectly, or explain every recommendation with complete accuracy.
If you want precise control, a manually curated playlist or Spotify’s other discovery formats, such as Mixes and daylist, may be a better choice. Upgrading to Premium solely for DJ may also be a poor fit if DJ is unavailable in your market or you do not want voice commentary.
