Prices, catalogues, sports rights, ownership and even platform names have moved on. The list below preserves the ten services commonly identified in 2022, explains the audience each served best, and then separates the changes a 2026 subscriber needs to know.
The order is an editorial comparison for Indian viewers, weighted toward Indian and regional catalogue (25%), originals (20%), sports and live television (15%), international content (10%), 2022 price/value (15%), usability (10%), and free or bundled access (5%). It is not an audited ranking by subscribers, revenue or watch time.

What each platform was best for in 2022
1. Disney+ Hotstar
Hotstar combined major Indian television, regional programming, Disney, Marvel and Pixar with cricket and other live sports. The practical choice was between a mobile-only plan and tiers designed for larger screens; catalogue access and live-sports rights were separate questions. It was the strongest all-round pick for families, Hindi viewers and sports fans, provided the relevant tournament rights were included in the plan.
#1 Best Overall

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
2. Amazon Prime Video
Prime Video was part of the wider Amazon Prime membership, so its value depended on whether a household also used delivery and other Prime benefits. It offered Indian originals alongside licensed international titles. A title displayed in the app was not necessarily included: rentals, purchases and add-on channels could appear beside subscription content. In 2022 it was the best bundle for regular Amazon customers, rather than automatically the cheapest video-only service.
3. Netflix
Netflix stood out for a deep international catalogue, Indian originals and a consistent app experience. The 2022 Indian structure described Mobile, Basic, Standard and Premium plans, with differences in resolution, supported devices and simultaneous viewing rather than a completely different catalogue. It suited viewers who prioritised series and films over live sports or conventional Indian television, but its broad catalogue did not make it the lowest-cost option for every household.
4. SonyLIV
SonyLIV brought Sony network programmes, Indian originals and event-based sports such as WWE where rights applied, plus selected international content. The historical Premium prices were ₹299 monthly, ₹699 for six months and ₹999 annually. Rights, profiles, downloads and screen rules can change, so “sports service” should always mean a named competition and season. It was a focused alternative for Sony viewers who did not need a generalist global library.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
5. ZEE5
ZEE5’s advantage was breadth across Hindi and regional television, films, originals and live channels. The 2022 description cited more than 90 live-TV channels, a publisher figure that should not be treated as a permanent catalogue guarantee. It was a natural choice for Zee network households and multilingual Indian families; title availability still varied by language and licensing window.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →6. ALTBalaji
ALTBalaji concentrated on Indian original series and was positioned as a low-cost Hindi scripted service. The source described ₹43 monthly and ₹300 annual plans and some telecom partner access, all historical figures. Content could be adult-oriented, so age ratings and household controls mattered. Include it as a 2022 recommendation, but verify the current brand and whether a standalone subscription exists before presenting it as a purchase today.
7. Voot
Voot was associated with Viacom18 programming from Colors and MTV, including reality shows, Hindi television and regional content, with free and paid viewing options. It belongs in a 2022 snapshot, not an unqualified current-buying guide. India’s newer government list highlights Jio Hotstar and other active services, while Voot appears in an older platform list.
Rank #3
- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
8. Sun NXT
Sun NXT was the specialist choice for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam households, carrying Sun Network serials, films, music videos and live television. The 2022 source claimed a library of more than 4,000 items; treat that as a publisher statement rather than a timeless count. For a South Indian family, its language depth could be more useful than a larger generalist catalogue.
9. aha
aha was the Telugu-first specialist, built around regional originals and films, with Tamil offerings where available. A language-specific service can outperform a larger platform when most viewing is in that language, even if its wider catalogue is narrow. The original 2022 coverage supplied little detail, so current plans, title availability and any Tamil tier should be checked directly at aha.
10. Viki Rakuten
Viki Rakuten served a different need from the Indian broadcaster platforms: Korean, Chinese, Japanese and other Asian dramas and films, often differentiated by subtitle coverage and territory. It was a sensible tenth entry for viewers seeking East Asian programming, but not for households whose priority was cricket or Indian television. Indian catalogue access and subscription terms should be confirmed at Viki.

Why 2022 “market share” did not produce one reliable ranking
Different published estimates used different denominators. One 2022 page reported Netflix and Amazon Prime at 20% each, Disney+ Hotstar at 17% and ZEE5 at 9% (OTTList). A business-school case extract instead reported Hotstar at 27%, Amazon at 21%, ZEE5 at 10%, Voot at 6%, JioCinema and SonyLIV at 4% each, with Netflix lower (case extract). Subscriber share, paid subscriptions, reach, watch time and app activity are not interchangeable. For that reason, this article uses transparent editorial use-cases instead of claiming an objective number-one service.

Disney+ Hotstar became JioHotstar
Current Indian government material lists Jio Hotstar among active platforms (Ministry of Information and Broadcasting). JioStar announced monthly, quarterly and annual JioHotstar options effective January 28, 2026; check the live signup page for the exact tier and price before paying (JioStar).
Voot is a historical reference
Do not send a reader to Voot without current verification. The Ministry’s current list names active services such as Jio Hotstar, SonyLIV, Sun NXT and ZEE5, while Voot appears in an older government platform list (older list).

Amazon MX Player moved into Prime Video
Amazon announced that MX Player and Prime Video were being unified in India, combining free and paid streaming in one destination (Amazon India). MX documentation says existing memberships were discontinued after the 2026 transition, while MX content remains available through free, ad-supported viewing or Prime Video (MX Player support).
Bundles matter more than a single app
Jio’s OTT pages advertise combinations including Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, SonyLIV, ZEE5 and Sun NXT (Jio OTT plans). Airtel Xstream and Tata Play Binge offer other bundle routes. A bundle can lower the effective cost when the qualifying broadband or mobile plan is already needed, but each app may retain separate logins, screen limits and ad policies.
How to choose without overpaying
- List the languages and three programmes your household actually watches.
- Decide whether a named sport or tournament is essential; verify the current rights and plan.
- Choose mobile-only, television-compatible or premium video quality according to your devices.
- Check whether an existing Amazon, Jio, Airtel or Tata Play plan already includes access.
- Confirm that “included” excludes rentals, purchases, premium channels and add-ons.
- Compare monthly, quarterly and annual billing, taxes, ads, simultaneous screens and download rules on the official checkout page.
Verdict
There was no universal 2022 winner. Disney+ Hotstar was the broadest sports-and-family choice; Netflix led for international originals; Prime Video made most sense with Amazon benefits; ZEE5 and Sun NXT served Indian-language households; SonyLIV filled a focused sports-and-Sony niche; aha and Viki rewarded specialist tastes. In 2026, choose by the exact language, sport, device and bundle you need, and treat every old price, right and platform name as date-bound.
