This is the standard 9/6 schedule documented by Wizard of Odds. Confirm the exact awards in the game you are using: some implementations alter the royal payout or other rows.

What “9/6” means
The first number is the full-house award and the second is the flush award when betting one credit: 9 and 6. “9/5,” “8/5” and “6/5” describe weaker schedules. The shorthand does not describe every line, so compare the complete table, including royal and straight-flush awards. Never judge a game by its title alone.

Beginner strategy that is sensible, not perfect
- Keep any made winning hand; do not break a straight, flush, full house or four of a kind to chase something rarer.
- Keep a pair, including a lower pair. Keep a pair of jacks, queens, kings or aces.
- Keep four cards to a flush, straight or royal draw when that draw is stronger than the alternatives.
- Do not automatically hold every high card, and do not assume a kicker belongs with a high pair.
- Close decisions depend on the pay table. Use a chart or analyzer rather than an “always chase the royal” rule.
Examples
- A♥ A♣ 7♦ 4♠ 2♥: hold the aces and draw three.
- J♠ 8♦ 5♣ 3♥ 2♠: a beginner normally holds the jack and draws four; a chart can resolve marginal alternatives.
- 9♥ 10♥ J♥ Q♥ K♥: hold all five; it is a straight flush.
- A♠ K♠ Q♠ 7♠ 2♠: hold the four-card royal draw.
- 5♣ 5♦ 9♠ 9♥ K♣: hold both pairs rather than discarding a made hand to chase a full house.
- Three to a royal versus a made low pair: consult a pay-table-specific trainer; there is no universal shortcut.
Practice with a strategy trainer
The Wizard of Odds Jacks or Better page provides free practice and analysis tools. It lists approximate full-pay 9/6 returns of 99.46% with simple strategy, 99.52% with intermediate strategy and 99.54% with optimal strategy. Use the trainer to learn decisions, not to predict the next card.
What 99.54% return does—and does not—mean
Wizard of Odds calculates approximately 99.5439% theoretical return for full-pay 9/6 Jacks or Better under optimal strategy. That is a long-run mathematical expectation for a specific pay table and near-perfect decisions, before altered schedules, promotions, wagering rules or playing errors. It is not a promise that a session—or a free demo—will win.

Each hand is independent; a losing streak does not make a win due. The same analysis reports a standard deviation of about 4.42 and a royal flush roughly once every 40,601 hands in its model. Those figures apply to the stated rules, not every online implementation. A demo has no practical monetary RTP because no money is risked or paid.
