Yes. Connect a compatible USB drive, SSD, hard disk or SD card to your iPad, open Files → Browse, select the device under Locations, and tap the movie. Native playback is easiest with an unencrypted MP4 or MOV containing H.264 video and AAC audio. If Files cannot decode the file, open it in VLC or Infuse instead.
Storage access and playback are separate: iPadOS may mount a drive successfully even when its built-in player cannot handle the movie’s codec, audio, subtitles or DRM.
What you need
- An iPad with USB-C or Lightning, running a compatible iPadOS version. Model support and current Files labels vary, so check your iPad in Settings → General → About and update when appropriate. Apple’s iPadOS guide documents external-drive access: Apple iPad User Guide.
- A USB flash drive, portable SSD, portable hard disk or SD card.
- The correct data-capable cable, adapter or card reader.
- A power source or powered hub if the drive draws more power than the iPad can provide.
- Optionally, VLC or Infuse for formats the built-in player does not support.
Playing directly leaves the movie on the external device. Copying it to On My iPad or to a player’s storage uses internal space but can be more reliable if the connection is unstable.

USB-C iPads
A USB-C iPad can use a USB-C flash drive, portable SSD, USB-C card reader, USB-C hub or a conventional drive with a suitable USB cable. Connector shape does not guarantee a particular USB or Thunderbolt speed; the iPad model, drive, cable and hub determine performance. For watching movies, stable power and a readable filesystem matter more than maximum benchmark speed.

Lightning iPads
Use a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, or Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader. The Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter has a power input that can be connected to a USB power adapter. A flash drive or SD card is generally easier to run than a bus-powered spinning hard disk, and no Lightning adapter can power every hard drive.
Connect the drive and open a movie
- Check whether the iPad has USB-C or Lightning.
- Attach the appropriate data adapter or cable, then connect the drive or card reader.
- Connect the drive’s own power supply, or connect a powered hub. On a Lightning iPad, connect power to the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter when needed.
- Open Files.
- Tap Browse at the bottom. If the sidebar is hidden, tap Browse again.
- Under Locations, tap the external drive’s name.
- Browse to the movie and tap it.
This is Apple’s documented route for external USB and SD storage: Files and external devices on iPad. If Files offers a Share or Open in… command, you can send the file to another player.
Why a movie may not play in Files
A container and its contents are different things. MP4, M4V, MOV, MKV and AVI are containers; the video codec, audio codec, subtitle format, resolution, bitrate and HDR system inside them determine compatibility. Newer iPads generally decode more demanding formats than older models, but no extension guarantees playback.

- H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio in an unencrypted MP4 or MOV is a useful low-friction compatibility target, not a guarantee.
- MKV support depends on the player and on the codecs and tracks inside the MKV.
- A file can show video but have no sound when its audio codec or selected track is unsupported.
- Embedded, external, forced, styled or bitmap subtitles can behave differently between players.
- Very high bitrate or resolution can exceed an older iPad’s practical decoding capability.
- DRM-protected downloads are not ordinary transferable movie files.
Use VLC when you want free, broad compatibility
VideoLAN describes VLC for iOS/iPadOS as free, libre and open source. Its official page lists MKV, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, network streams, cloud integrations and SMB, NFS, SFTP and FTP support: VLC for iOS. The page showed version 3.7.0 when retrieved; the version in the App Store may change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install VLC from the App Store.
- Connect the drive and locate the movie in Files.
- Use Share or Open in VLC, if that action appears.
- If direct opening is unavailable, copy the movie into VLC’s folder under On My iPad, then open it from VLC.
VLC advertises wide format support, but playback still depends on the particular file and iPad. Its library interface is less focused on automatic movie artwork than Infuse.
Use Infuse for a managed movie library
Infuse is aimed at collections rather than one-off playback. Its iPad App Store listing advertises support for MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, HEVC, VP9, AV1, MTS/M2TS, TS, VOB and other formats, plus multiple audio and subtitle tracks, chapters, HDR, Dolby Vision, AirPlay, metadata and USB-drive sources such as SanDisk iXpand: Infuse on the App Store.

The basic app is free with optional in-app purchases. The listing describes Infuse Pro as an optional subscription with a free trial; offers and prices vary by region and can change. Infuse’s listing also states that DRM-protected iTunes Store movies and television shows are not supported as ordinary external files.
- Install Infuse and connect the external drive.
- Use Infuse’s file or storage browser to select the drive, or open a movie from Files with the Share menu.
- Choose audio and subtitle tracks inside Infuse, and allow it to build library metadata if desired.
Format the drive for iPadOS
Apple lists these filesystems for a single-partition external storage device: APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT/FAT64, FAT32 and FAT. The current guide is Apple’s iPad documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- exFAT: usually the most practical choice when sharing a drive between Windows, Mac and iPad, especially for large movies.
- FAT32: broadly compatible but limited to a 4 GB maximum size for one file. This is a filesystem limit, not an iPad playback limit.
- APFS or HFS+: useful in Apple-only workflows and less convenient for Windows sharing.
- NTFS: do not assume normal native iPadOS read support; use a documented compatible format instead.
- Partitions: Apple specifies one data partition. Multiple partitions can prevent recognition or limit access.
Reformatting erases the drive. Back up the movie collection first. Formatting options shown in Files or on a Mac or PC depend on the iPad model and iPadOS release.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The drive is missing from Locations
- Disconnect and reconnect it.
- Confirm the adapter and cable carry data rather than only charging.
- Try another cable, adapter or port.
- Provide power to the drive or hub.
- Test the drive on a Mac or PC.
- Check the filesystem and confirm there is one partition.
- Restart the iPad and update iPadOS if appropriate.
- Back up and reformat only as a last resort.
A low-power SSD or flash drive often works where a bus-powered mechanical disk does not. Symptoms of insufficient power include repeated disconnections, an accessory-power warning, clicking or spinning down, and playback that stops unexpectedly. Apple discusses independent power and powered hubs in its guide: external storage on iPad.
The movie is listed but will not play
- Try VLC, then Infuse.
- Copy a short sample to On My iPad and test it with the drive disconnected.
- Try another file from the same drive.
- Test the original file on a Mac or PC for corruption.
- Only then consider remuxing or converting to H.264/AAC MP4. Preserve required subtitles and audio tracks deliberately.
Video plays without sound
The audio track may use a codec the native player cannot decode, or the selected track may be unsuitable. VLC and Infuse advertise broader audio-track support, but Dolby, DTS, multichannel, HDMI, AirPlay and Bluetooth behavior depends on the app, iPad, output device and format. No player guarantees identical passthrough for every Dolby TrueHD, Atmos or DTS file.
Subtitles are absent
Try VLC or Infuse, which advertise multiple subtitle formats and tracks. For an external subtitle, place it beside the movie with a matching base name, such as Movie.mkv and Movie.en.srt. Forced, ASS/SSA-styled, PGS and other bitmap subtitles may render differently across players.

Playback stutters
Check power and the cable first, then test the same file locally. A high-bitrate or high-resolution file may exceed the iPad’s decoding capability, while a failing drive or unstable connection can interrupt otherwise compatible video.
Choose storage for your situation
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flash drive | Small, inexpensive and low power | Often slower or less durable; can become hot | A few movies while travelling |
| Portable SSD | Fast, quiet and resistant to movement | Costs more and may need a suitable cable or hub | Large or high-bitrate collections |
| Portable hard disk | High capacity for the money | More power-hungry and vulnerable to movement | Capacity-focused home use with reliable power |
| NAS or network share | No physical drive attached; central library | Requires Wi-Fi and server configuration | Home collections |
Infuse lists Mac, PC, NAS, Wi-Fi hard drives, Plex, Emby, Jellyfin and cloud services as sources. VLC lists SMB, NFS, SFTP, FTP, UPnP/DLNA and several cloud integrations. These approaches avoid adapter and drive-power problems but add network bandwidth and reliability requirements. Sources: Infuse and VLC.
Purchased and subscription downloads are different
Movies downloaded from Apple TV, iTunes, Netflix, Disney+ and similar services are normally protected by DRM. They generally cannot be copied to USB storage and played as ordinary files in Files, VLC or Infuse. Watch them in the relevant official app while signed in to the account that owns the content. Do not attempt to circumvent DRM.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Drive visible and MP4/MOV plays: stay with Files and play directly.
- Drive visible but playback fails: try VLC for a free solution or Infuse for a richer library and broader published format support.
- Drive missing or disconnecting: check power, data-capable connections, filesystem and partition layout before converting files.
- Large collection: use an exFAT portable SSD or a NAS, with Infuse if you want metadata and library organization.
- DRM-protected purchase or rental: use the original service app.
