The moment is an early, deliberately startling sign of her bodily curiosity and development. It is not accompanied by a confirmed explanation that the fruit represents one specific idea.
What happens in the scene
The scene occurs as Bella is learning about her body and feelings she has not experienced before. TIME’s review describes her taking an apple from the table and beginning to pleasure herself. The film presents the act as part of her discovery rather than as a puzzle with an explicitly stated solution.
Why Bella behaves so openly
Bella has been brought back to life by the scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter and begins the story without the memories and social conditioning normally associated with an adult life. Her perspective develops through direct experience, while the people around her react to behavior they find shocking or improper.
Director Yorgos Lanthimos explained Bella’s relationship to social rules in a 2023 Guardian interview: “She never got to know what shame is, so she is totally free to give her mind, her thoughts, her opinions, her body, whatever.” That is broad character context, not a scene-specific explanation of the apple.

What the apple may suggest
A cautious reading is that the episode dramatizes Bella’s emerging bodily autonomy and her lack of learned sexual shame. It also creates a collision between her developmental point of view and the expectations of the Victorian world around her. The scene can therefore feel comic, provocative and unsettling at the same time.
Those ideas are interpretations based on the scene and Lanthimos’s comments. The available interviews and reviews do not establish that Stone or Lanthimos identified the apple as a definitive symbol, nor do they support a settled consensus about the scene’s ethics or meaning.

How it fits the film’s larger story
Poor Things follows Bella after Dr. Baxter revives her. As she encounters new places, relationships and forms of knowledge, her behavior exposes the assumptions other characters bring to her. The apple episode belongs to that larger pattern: Bella investigates her own experience directly, while society tries to classify or control it.

The film was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, written by Tony McNamara and adapted from Scottish novelist Alasdair Gray’s 1992 book Poor Things. That source provides a useful route for readers interested in adaptation differences, but the film’s existence does not prove that every detail of this scene appears in the novel or carries the same emphasis there.
