Jump ahead is a YouTube Premium shortcut that predicts a point many viewers want to reach and offers a quick jump while you seek forward. YouTube says it combines AI with viewing-data patterns; it is not a chapter navigator, full-video summary, or guaranteed sponsor skipper. The feature first launched for U.S. Premium subscribers on Android on June 27, 2024, expanded to the web as a Premium experiment on January 22, 2025, and is now documented for additional TV and connected-device platforms.
What YouTube Jump ahead actually does
When you fast-forward through a supported video, YouTube may show a Jump ahead control or marker. Activating it takes you to what YouTube describes as “the next point in the video most users fast-forward to.” The destination is inferred from aggregate viewing behavior, with AI helping predict where a viewer may want to go.

That makes Jump ahead a single suggested destination, not a list of chapters or a semantic search engine. It does not promise to identify the objectively best moment, understand your personal reason for watching, or produce an AI-generated summary. YouTube has not published the model architecture, training method, confidence threshold, or the exact mix of transcript, audio, and visual signals involved.

YouTube describes the feature and its AI-and-viewership-data approach in its June 27, 2024 announcement.

The dates and rollout descriptions come from YouTube’s 2024 announcement, its January 2025 announcement, and the current Premium benefits Help page. It is therefore misleading to describe Jump ahead as a new 2026 launch.
How to use Jump ahead
On a computer
- Open an eligible video while signed in to the YouTube Premium account.
- Seek forward in the player. You can double-click or otherwise use the seek control, or hover over the progress bar to look for the Jump ahead indication.
- Select the Jump ahead control when it appears.
- If you prefer the keyboard, YouTube documents Option/Alt + Right Arrow for macOS presentations and Ctrl + Right Arrow on Windows. Browser and keyboard labeling can vary, so use the on-screen seek controls if a shortcut does not respond.
On a smart TV, streaming device, or game console
- Press the remote’s Right Arrow while the video is playing.
- Look for a dot or Jump ahead indication on the progress bar.
- Press Right Arrow again to move to the suggested point.
- Press Enter or OK to confirm the jump.
On a phone or tablet
YouTube’s original mobile description showed Jump ahead appearing after a viewer double-tapped to skip forward. Mobile controls can change with app updates, so use the current seek gesture or progress bar and follow the Jump ahead prompt if it appears. The Help page’s current device guidance should take precedence over an older gesture description.

Who gets Jump ahead?
Jump ahead is presented as a YouTube Premium benefit, not a standard control for every account. Availability can vary by country or territory, language, device, account rollout, and video. YouTube’s Help documentation lists support for content in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, and Turkish. A supported language alone does not make every video eligible.

The original release was limited to U.S. Premium subscribers on Android. Later web and connected-device documentation reflects a broader rollout, but it does not mean every Premium member sees the same interface on every device.
Videos that do not support it
YouTube says Jump ahead is unavailable on:
- Shorts
- Premieres
- Live streams
- Music videos and other music content
- Movies
- Shows
It can also be missing from an ordinary long-form upload when YouTube has insufficient viewing patterns or does not generate a suggestion. An absent button therefore does not automatically indicate a billing or app problem.
Does Jump ahead skip ads or sponsor segments?
No such guarantee exists. YouTube’s official description is a jump to a point most viewers fast-forward to; it does not define Jump ahead as an advertising or sponsorship remover.
A prediction may happen to land after a long introduction, repeated section, or creator-read sponsor message because viewers commonly seek past that material. That is a consequence of observed behavior, not a promised function. YouTube Premium’s normal ad-free benefit also does not necessarily remove sponsorships recorded inside a creator’s video.

How accurate is the prediction likely to be?
Jump ahead trades precision for speed. A popular skip point can be useful in a long interview, tutorial, lecture, podcast, or presentation, especially when you simply want to get beyond a slow opening. But the same point may be wrong for your purpose.
- A frequently skipped introduction may contain context, disclosures, or setup you need.
- The most common destination may reflect a different audience intent from yours.
- A video’s edit, title, audience, or popularity can change after the behavior pattern was established.
- A suggestion may be unavailable when there is not enough viewing data.
These are practical consequences of a behavior-based shortcut, not published YouTube performance statistics. If context matters, inspect chapters or scrub manually before accepting the jump.
Jump ahead versus other ways to navigate

Jump ahead is separate from YouTube chapters, conversational features, transcript search, and automatic playback-speed tools.
Troubleshooting when Jump ahead is missing
- Confirm that the account has an active YouTube Premium membership.
- Update the YouTube app or open the current desktop site.
- Test a conventional long-form video rather than a Short, live stream, Premiere, music video, movie, or show.
- Check whether the video’s language and your region are covered by YouTube’s documented availability.
- Use the progress bar or seek controls instead of relying on one particular phone gesture or keyboard shortcut.
- Try another eligible video; YouTube does not promise the feature on every upload.
- Use chapters or manual seeking when no prediction appears.
- For a device-specific discrepancy, check YouTube’s current Premium benefits and controls page, since experimental features and interfaces change.
Is YouTube Premium worth paying for Jump ahead alone?
Usually not. Jump ahead is a convenience feature with conditional availability, so it is a weak reason to buy a subscription by itself. It makes more sense as one small benefit in a broader Premium decision.

If you rarely watch long videos, free YouTube with chapters and manual seeking may be sufficient. YouTube Music Premium, available at music.youtube.com, is aimed primarily at music listening rather than replacing all video Premium benefits. Google One plans at one.google.com/about/plans address storage and Google-service needs without making Jump ahead part of the purchase.

The Bottom Line
Jump ahead is an AI- and viewing-data-assisted Premium shortcut to a point many viewers commonly seek, not a guaranteed highlight finder or sponsor skipper. It is most useful on long-form videos, but device, language, region, format, and video-level limits mean even eligible Premium subscribers may not see it.
