Use ChatGPT as a drafting partner for the musical plan: give it the film context, cue length, emotional movement, available instruments and edit points, then ask for a playable motif, chord outline and arrangement map. Treat the reply as a proposal to check and adapt by ear; move the parts you keep into a songwriting workspace or your DAW before scoring to picture.
Set The Brief Before You Prompt
For a documentary cue, the brief should tie music to the scene’s evidence and edit, rather than ask for a mood alone. Decide what the music must do: support narration, leave room for an interview, mark a reveal, or carry a transition. Note the picture duration, any dialogue or location sound that must remain clear, and where the cue should begin and end.
- Describe the scene in a few factual sentences. Separate what viewers see from what the narrator or interviewee says.
- Name the intended emotional change, such as moving from uncertainty to cautious resolve. Avoid asking for music that tells viewers what to think about disputed evidence.
- List the instruments you can actually record or program, the performer’s ability, and any production limits.
- Mark the edit points and approximate cue duration. If timing is still changing, ask for a flexible structure with a clear ending option.
Ask ChatGPT For A Playable Starting Point
Use a prompt that requests concrete musical decisions and makes uncertainty visible. Here is a template to adapt:
Prompt: “I’m composing a documentary cue for this scene: [brief factual description]. It lasts about [duration]. The music should move from [starting state] to [ending state], while leaving space for [dialogue, narration or sound]. I can use [instruments] and have [performer or production constraints]. Propose a short instrumental cue plan: sections tied to these edit points [times or events], a simple motif described in note names or scale degrees, a chord outline, a playable rhythm, and one variation for the final section. Keep the arrangement restrained and avoid adding a dramatic hit unless an edit point calls for one. Flag any music-theory assumptions I should check. Do not write lyrics or claim this is a finished score.”

For a scene with an interview under music, try a narrower follow-up: “Revise the plan so the motif uses fewer notes and the accompaniment thins under the interview. Give me two voicing options that stay within [instrument range].” For a montage, specify the actual cut sequence and ask for a musical change at one named cut, rather than a generic build.
Turn The Reply Into A Cue You Can Edit
- Check the musical details. Play or enter the proposed notes and chords yourself. Check that the motif fits the instrument, the harmony works with the melody, and the rhythm can be performed at the intended tempo. Ask ChatGPT to clarify a notation you cannot interpret; do not assume a plausible-looking answer is correct.
- Make a cue map. Convert the plan into a compact table or session markers: opening, development, edit-point change and ending. Put approximate timecodes beside the picture events, then adjust them against the actual cut.
- Record or program a rough version. Start with the motif and a minimal accompaniment. Listen against narration and location sound; reduce or pause parts where they compete with speech or an important sound.
- Revise against the film. If a cut changes, move the musical event to the new edit point. If the cue feels too forceful, ask for a thinner texture or less frequent motif, then decide by listening whether the change serves the scene.
- Save the human decisions. Keep your own drafts, edits, notation and session versions so you can identify what you contributed and recreate the cue.

Get consent before using a person’s voice or a sample they control, and check the terms of any platform used to create or store music. Do not infer a license from a tool’s ability to produce or export a cue. For U.S. copyright registration, the Copyright Office says applicants must disclose and describe the human author’s contribution when a work contains more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material. It also says prompts alone do not make someone the author and that only human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected.
