Yes—music can keep playing while your iPhone is locked or while you use another app, provided the app supports background audio and nothing else takes control of the audio session. When playback stops, the cause is usually an app interruption, a changed audio destination, AirPods detection, Bluetooth range, or missing offline access—not a single iPhone-wide switch.
The fastest method
- Open a music app that supports background playback and start an album, playlist, or podcast.
- Lock the iPhone or swipe up to open another app.
- Use the Lock Screen or Control Center audio card to pause, resume, skip, scrub, adjust volume, or choose an output.
- If it stops, open Control Center and tap Play. Check that the card shows the expected app, track, and destination.
Apple documents this workflow for the Music app on iOS 26. It does not guarantee identical behavior from every third-party app.
Apple Music: reliable background playback
In Music, choose Library, Home, New, an album, or a playlist, then tap Play or Shuffle. Starting an album or playlist is more reliable than starting one isolated song if you want continuous listening. Check the queue, repeat, shuffle, Crossfade, and AutoMix controls when a playlist ends unexpectedly.
For travel or weak reception, download content over Wi‑Fi and confirm it under Library > Downloaded. Streaming needs network access; a downloaded subscription track remains subject to the service’s account and licensing rules, while purchased or personally owned files are a separate category.

When another app stops the music
Video players, camera and voice-recording apps, calls, some games, and navigation prompts can claim audio focus or interrupt an existing audio session. That is an app or system audio conflict, not necessarily a lock-screen problem.
- Open Control Center and press Play.
- If it stops again immediately, pause or close the app that is recording, calling, or playing media.
- Restart playback in the music app.
- Test a different app. If only one app causes the pause, update that app and iOS.
There is no universal setting that forces every app to coexist with music. Apple’s developer documentation describes interruptions as normal iOS audio behavior: Handling audio interruptions.
Check whether the sound moved instead of stopping
Open Control Center, tap the playback-destination button, and select the iPhone, AirPods, car, speaker, or other intended device. Audio can move to a nearby Mac, HomePod, TV, car system, or Bluetooth accessory and make the iPhone appear silent.
For AirPods, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Keep Audio with Headphones to reduce unwanted switching when another Apple or Bluetooth device becomes available. This setting is specifically useful when audio appears to stop but is actually being routed elsewhere.

Bluetooth playback can return to the iPhone when an accessory leaves range. Charge the accessory, move closer, disconnect it from other nearby devices, and reconnect it if necessary. For a third-party accessory, Settings > Bluetooth > information button > Device Type lets you identify it as headphones, speakers, or a car stereo; this improves identification but is not a universal dropout fix.

AirPods that pause unexpectedly
AirPods can pause when their sensors decide an earbud has been removed. AirPods Max can use head detection similarly. Try this sequence:

- Clean and reseat the earbuds.
- Test with automatic ear detection disabled in the AirPods settings. For AirPods Max, test with automatic head detection disabled.
- Forget and re-pair the AirPods if the behavior continues.
- Update the iPhone and AirPods firmware where applicable, then test another audio app.
Disabling detection changes the normal pause-when-removed behavior, so treat it as a diagnostic or deliberate trade-off rather than an automatic permanent fix.

Offline listening: the most dependable preparation
- Download the album, playlist, or podcast on Wi‑Fi.
- Open the app’s downloaded/offline section and confirm the tracks appear.
- Start one downloaded track, enable Airplane Mode briefly, and verify that it continues.
- Disable Airplane Mode afterward and leave adequate storage for future downloads.
Cached streaming is not the same as a confirmed offline download. Subscription downloads normally require the active account and periodic service authorization; they are not permanent ownership.
Bluetooth or wired headphones?
Wireless headphones are convenient and can provide hands-free controls, transparency modes, and Spatial Audio, but they add battery, pairing, range, and automatic-switching failure modes. Wired headphones avoid Bluetooth dropouts and are a useful fallback for an important journey.
On USB‑C iPhones, Apple’s USB‑C-to-3.5-mm adapter connects standard wired headphones or speakers. It occupies the USB‑C port and adapter quality can affect controls or microphone support. Lightning iPhones need a Lightning-compatible audio adapter instead. Wired audio does not prevent pauses caused by calls, recordings, or an app’s audio session.

Lossless audio affects quality and data use, not whether playback survives a screen lock. In Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality > Lossless Audio, Apple lists Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi‑Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Lossless downloads use more storage and streaming uses more data. Ordinary Bluetooth connections are not lossless; high-resolution playback may require wired equipment and, above 48 kHz on iPhone, an external DAC.

For Apple Music subscribers, Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos offers Automatic and Always On. Spatial Audio can also be adjusted by touching and holding the volume control in Control Center. These features change presentation, not basic background playback. If audio behaves oddly, temporarily disable Atmos or other processing, establish stable playback, then re-enable it.

Background Sounds is a different feature
Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds provides ambient sounds such as rain, ocean, or noise. It is not a switch for keeping music apps alive. It includes volume, behavior alongside other media, and timer controls.

Choosing a service for uninterrupted listening
- Apple Music: Best for iPhone and Apple-device integration, Lock Screen controls, downloaded catalog content, lossless, Dolby Atmos, AutoMix, and Family Sharing. Promotions and prices vary by country and date; see the official page.
- Spotify Premium: Strong discovery, playlists, social listening, broad device support, CarPlay/Android Auto, and offline listening. Its U.S. page advertises lossless up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz; check current regional pricing at Spotify Premium.
- YouTube Premium: Suits live performances, remixes, DJ sets, creator uploads, and video-first listening with background playback. Terms and prices are region-specific; verify them at YouTube Premium.
- Owned or local files: Avoid subscription availability and streaming-signal problems, but require your own storage, library management, and compatible playback app.
A reliable travel setup
Before leaving Wi‑Fi, download a playlist, test it in Airplane Mode, charge the headphones, select the intended destination, and configure automatic switching deliberately. Carry a wired fallback—especially for flights, long workouts, or commutes where a Bluetooth or battery failure would be inconvenient. This setup addresses continuity, routing, and connectivity separately instead of relying on one unexplained setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Background App Refresh keep music playing?
No universal evidence supports that as a fix. Supported audio apps use their own audio sessions; diagnose the app, interruption, destination, or network instead.
Can music keep playing during a phone call?
Calls can interrupt or take audio focus. Resume playback from the Lock Screen or Control Center when the call ends.
Why does lossless audio not sound different over AirPods?
Ordinary Bluetooth playback is compressed, and audible differences also depend on the headphones, track, environment, and listener. Lossless does not improve playback continuity.
