YouTube Music’s March 26, 2025 update brought two separate ways to personalize the app: Premium subscribers in selected markets could refine Ask Music radio sessions with follow-up prompts, while Android users could upload a photo or choose an image for a playlist cover. The radio feature uses AI; uploading a cover does not. Custom playlist art later reached iOS as well, but availability of Ask Music still depends on account and region.
Tune an Ask Music radio with prompts
Ask Music turns a natural-language request into a radio-like listening session, then lets eligible listeners steer it with suggested follow-ups or a custom prompt. You might ask for a more upbeat sound, focus on jazz, or request songs with female vocals. These are directions for recommendations, not guaranteed filters: the resulting queue can depend on your listening history, the available catalog and how YouTube Music interprets the request.
- Open YouTube Music and start an Ask Music radio, if the feature is available on your account.
- Review the suggested refinement prompts shown with the session.
- Choose a suggestion or enter your own instruction to shift the mood, genre or other quality.
- Let the app update the radio. Likes, dislikes and skips can also inform recommendations over time.
The reported March 2025 rollout was for YouTube Music Premium subscribers on Android and iOS in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Ireland. It should not be read as a worldwide or free-user launch. YouTube notes that experiences can vary by country and region; check the YouTube Music availability and membership information for your account. The March 2025 rollout details describe suggested prompts and free-form refinements, but the exact controls may differ by app version or account.

For a personal playlist, YouTube Music added an option to use an image from your device or take a new photo. This changes the playlist thumbnail—not the official artwork for an album or single.

- Open the YouTube Music Android app and go to Library.
- Open a playlist you created, then look for the pencil or edit control near its cover-art area.
- Choose Choose from library to select an image, or Take photo to use the camera.
- Confirm the image and save the playlist changes.
The reported interface places the edit control around the playlist’s 2×2 cover-art grid. Images may be cropped or resized to fit. Use an image you have permission to use, particularly if the playlist is public. The rollout was first reported for Android; YouTube Music later said custom playlist art was available on iOS too. Three features that are easy to confuse

YouTube introduced Custom Radio in 2023, with controls for choosing artists and adjusting listening attributes. A later feature roundup described tuning existing attribute-based radios on mobile, not just radios created with the builder. Those conventional radio tools are distinct from Ask Music; YouTube’s older feature announcements describe mobile radio tuning for listeners broadly, while the 2025 Ask Music rollout was reported as Premium-only. AI-generated playlist art is another separate tool. Its experimental rollout was initially described for English-language users in the United States, with guided categories such as colors, moods and landscapes. The 2025 update added Workout and Instruments themes. It generates artwork from theme choices; it is not the same as uploading a personal photo. A separate AI Playlist feature reported in 2026 generates playlists from prompts, and should not be confused with Ask Music radios.
If the controls are missing
- Ask Music or its refinements are absent: Confirm you are in YouTube Music, check that your account has Premium, and consider whether your country or language is supported. Update the app and restart it. Entry points and availability can vary; try starting from Search or Home if Ask Music is offered there.
- The playlist edit control is absent: Check a playlist you created rather than a platform-generated mix, and look around the cover-art area for the pencil icon. Update and reopen the app. The feature may not have reached every account or market; the web version may be another option.
- The chosen cover looks different: The image may be cropped or resized to fit the thumbnail. A clear, square image is a practical choice, though the precise image requirements may vary.
Premium includes benefits such as ad-free music, background play, audio-only listening and downloads, but subscribing does not guarantee immediate access to every experimental or region-limited feature. Check the official YouTube Music membership page for the plan and price available to your account.
