Spotify lets you change the country or region attached to your account, but the steps depend on your plan. Free users change it from Edit profile while physically in the new country. Premium users may need a payment method issued there, and the change normally starts with the next billing date. If you are only traveling briefly, you usually do not need to change anything.
What changing your Spotify region actually does
Your Spotify country is the market associated with your account, originally based on where you were when you signed up. Changing it can affect the price and eligibility of Premium plans, the catalog offered in that market, and locally available service features. Spotify warns that both pricing and catalog availability may change after a country switch (Spotify Support).
This setting is not the same as the app language, your phone’s location, recommendation preferences, or the country associated with an artist. A country change also does not guarantee that a particular song, album, podcast, or artist will become available.

Traveling or permanently moving?
- Short trip: Keep your existing region unless Spotify stops allowing playback. Premium users can generally continue using their account abroad without changing country settings.
- Free account abroad: Spotify says Free users can use Spotify in another country for up to 14 days before they may need to update the account region (Spotify Community FAQ).
- Permanent move: Update the account country, and if you have Premium, be prepared to update billing as well.
Change region on Spotify Free
- Sign in to your account page in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Choose Edit profile.
- Scroll to Country or region.
- Select the new country.
- Click Save profile.
The new country may appear only when Spotify detects that you are physically there. If it is missing, confirm your location, sign out and back in, and try the account page in a desktop browser. Spotify must also offer service in that country.

Change region on Spotify Premium
- Sign in to the Spotify account page.
- Under Your plan, select Update next to your payment method.
- Enter a payment method issued in your new country, if Spotify requests one.
- Complete the change and wait for it to take effect from your next billing date.
Spotify says Premium users may need a locally issued payment method. Prices, plans, eligibility and catalog availability can change by market, so check the official Spotify pricing page for the country where you now live rather than relying on prices from another country.
If your Premium payment method cannot be changed
Spotify’s Community FAQ describes this fallback:
- Cancel Premium.
- Wait until the account returns to Free.
- While physically in the new country, change the country under Edit profile.
- Add a payment method issued in that country.
- Subscribe again.
Canceling Premium can remove music downloaded for offline playback. Your playlists, liked songs and other saved library items should remain intact. If you are billed through Apple, Google Play, a mobile carrier or another partner, payment changes or cancellation may have to be handled through that provider.

Why the new country is missing
- You are not physically in the country Spotify is expected to detect.
- Spotify is not available there.
- The account page has not refreshed; sign out, sign back in and retry.
- You are using an app screen instead of the documented web account page.
- Your account was created through Apple or Facebook. Spotify says the country or region settings for those services may also need to be changed (official guidance).
- You are signed into a different or duplicate Spotify account from the one holding your subscription and playlists.
- Your Premium billing is controlled by a third party.
Will your playlists and saved music disappear?
Changing the country on the same account is preferable to opening a new one. In the cancel-and-resubscribe fallback, Spotify distinguishes between your library and device downloads: offline downloads may be removed, while playlists and saved library items remain.

Spotify’s FAQ notes that some playlists and followed profiles may be transferable in limited circumstances, but albums are not transferred automatically and must be saved again. You may also lose continuity such as listening history and followers.

Will a region change unlock an unavailable song?
Not necessarily. Music rights are licensed by territory. Changing your account country can change the catalog Spotify offers, but it cannot guarantee access to a specific track or release. If only one song is missing, a region switch may not solve the rights restriction.
Do you need a VPN?
No. A VPN can alter your apparent network location, but it does not change the country stored on your Spotify account, create a locally issued payment method or guarantee a different catalog. Spotify’s documented process relies on being in the new country for Free accounts and may require local billing for Premium. Treat VPN-based region changes as unofficial and unreliable, and do not use false payment details to bypass regional pricing or licensing rules.

Should you create a new Spotify account?
Usually not. Keep the existing account when you can update its country; that preserves your playlists and saved library. Consider a new account only if the original cannot be recovered or modified, or if you accept rebuilding data after a billing setup that cannot be attached to it.
