Hulu’s spinning wheel is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it can come from a stalled app, a network problem, browser data, an unsupported device, a title-specific issue, or a temporary Hulu-side failure. Start by trying another title and another device, then work through the least disruptive fixes: fully close Hulu, restart the device, check the connection, clear relevant cache or app data, update the app and device, and reinstall only if needed.
First, work out where the problem is
Before changing settings, try a different Hulu movie or episode. Then test Hulu on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi, and try another streaming service on the affected device. These quick checks narrow the cause:
- Only one title spins: The problem may be specific to that title, channel, live event, or your access to it. Try two other titles before changing the app or router.
- Hulu spins on one device, but works elsewhere: Focus on that device’s Hulu app, software, cache, or compatibility.
- Hulu and other services fail on devices using the same Wi-Fi: The router, internet connection, or local network is a stronger suspect.
- Hulu fails on several devices and different connections: An account or Hulu-side problem becomes more plausible. That pattern alone does not confirm an outage.

- Try another title. If only one program fails, note its name and any error message. There is little reason to reinstall Hulu when other titles play normally.
- Fully close Hulu and reopen it. Returning to the home screen may leave the app suspended. Exit Hulu, open your device’s recent-apps or app-management view, and remove or force-close Hulu. Reopen it and retry. The exact controls vary by device; Hulu has a guide to fully closing the app.
- Restart the device. Use the device’s genuine restart option if available. If a TV or streaming box has no restart command, turn it off and unplug it from power briefly before reconnecting it. Restart a phone or tablet; on a computer, close the browser completely and reopen it. A remote’s power button may only put a TV into standby.
- Power-cycle the modem and router. Close Hulu, unplug the modem and router, and wait several minutes. Reconnect the modem first and wait for its internet connection to return; then reconnect the separate router. This briefly disconnects other household devices. Hulu recommends connection troubleshooting such as power-cycling in its playback guidance and internet-connection help.
- Test the connection another way. If practical, connect the streaming device to Ethernet. You can also test Hulu on a phone using cellular data or a hotspot. If Hulu works on cellular but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the home network or internet service. If it improves near the router, weak Wi-Fi may be contributing.
- Clear the relevant cache or app data. Start with cached files where that option exists. Clear app data only if needed: it resets the app and usually means signing in again. Browser steps are below.
- Update both Hulu and the device. Check for Hulu updates in the device’s official app store, then check for operating-system or firmware updates on the TV, streamer, console, phone, or computer. One update does not guarantee the other is current.
- Reinstall Hulu if the problem persists. Uninstall the app, restart the device, reinstall Hulu from its official app store, sign in again, and test an on-demand title. If you use Live TV, test that separately. Do not download unofficial Hulu apps or APKs.
- Check device support. If an older TV or streamer is the only device that fails, confirm its exact model against Hulu’s supported-device list and list of devices no longer supported. Support depends on model and platform, not just brand.
If Hulu spins in a browser
Close Hulu tabs, then open the browser’s privacy or settings controls and clear cached files. If the problem remains, clear Hulu’s site data or cookies too; this may sign you out and remove site preferences. Restart the browser, sign in again, and test playback. Hulu provides browser-cache troubleshooting instructions.

A private-browsing window can help test whether ordinary browser data or an extension is involved. If it works there, temporarily disable extensions that affect scripts, ads, privacy, or content filtering, then test again. Private browsing is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed permanent fix.
If Hulu spins in an app
Menu names differ across Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android or Google TV, smart TVs, consoles, and mobile devices, so avoid following a path meant for another model. In app settings, look for options such as Force stop, Clear cache, or Clear data where available. Clearing cache removes temporary files and is usually less disruptive; clearing data typically resets the app and requires a new sign-in. Some platforms do not expose cache controls, in which case restarting or reinstalling may be the practical equivalent.

On iPhone or iPad, if restarting and updating do not help, use the platform’s app-removal and reinstall process rather than searching for a cache menu that may not exist. On any device, install Hulu only from the platform’s official store.

Check Wi-Fi, VPNs, and network filters
A speed test can be useful, but a high download-speed result does not rule out Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, unstable latency, a router fault, or a Hulu-side issue. If other services are also slow, troubleshoot the connection first. If only Hulu fails on one device, return to app, software, and compatibility checks.

As a targeted test, temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy and retry Hulu. You can also test on a different network. VPNs are not automatically the cause, and disabling one is not a universal fix; Hulu’s playback guidance includes proxy-related conditions. Work, school, hotel, or public Wi-Fi may also restrict streaming traffic.
When Live TV or one channel is the problem
If on-demand Hulu works but Live TV, a local channel, or a sports event spins, the issue may involve location, home-network requirements, regional availability, a blackout, device restrictions, subscription entitlement, or that particular feed—not ordinary buffering. Check that your plan includes the content and that location settings are appropriate; do not repeatedly change your Live TV home location as a generic troubleshooting step. If just one title or channel fails, test other programs and record the exact title, episode or channel, and time. That helps distinguish a specific playback issue from a problem affecting all of Hulu.

If Hulu still spins after these tests—especially across supported devices and more than one connection—use the Hulu Help Center for troubleshooting and support options. Do not assume there is an outage based on one device: the Help Center is a support resource, not a guaranteed real-time public outage diagnosis.

Before contacting support, gather:
- Device brand and exact model, plus its operating-system or firmware version.
- Hulu app version, if visible, or browser name and version.
- Whether one title or all titles fail, and whether Live TV is affected.
- Whether other streaming services work, and whether Hulu works on another device or network.
- Any exact error code or message, and when the issue began.
- Whether the device is connected by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular data.
Do not factory-reset a TV or router as a routine Hulu fix. It is disruptive and should be considered only for a broader device problem, after consulting the manufacturer or support. You probably do not need to buy anything: first test another network or Ethernet, and consider replacement hardware only if the device is unsupported or has broader problems.
