Short answer: Disney+ generally does not allow an account to be shared with people outside the subscriber’s Household in the United States. On eligible plans, the authorized alternative is an Extra Member: one person outside the Household gets a separate login for an additional monthly fee. Disney’s listed U.S. prices range from $6.99 to $14.99 per month, depending on the plan or bundle.
This is not a newly announced universal lockout or automatic charge for every shared account. Disney says it may analyze account use, limit access, or terminate access when it determines that the subscriber agreement has been violated.

Disney’s Help Center lists these U.S. Extra Member add-on prices. They are charged in addition to the underlying subscription.

What Disney means by “Household”
Under Disney’s subscriber agreement, a Household is generally the collection of devices associated with the subscriber’s primary personal residence and used by people who live there.
That means ordinary sharing among family members or roommates who live at the same primary address is generally different from giving the password to someone in another apartment, city, or state. Disney says it can assess subscription activity, linked devices, internet connections, and other signals when determining whether use complies with the Household rules.
The restriction can affect:
- A parent paying for a child who permanently lives away at college.
- A partner who maintains a separate home.
- Friends splitting one subscription between different addresses.
- A relative using the account from another city.
- A former roommate who still has the password.
- Users who treat a vacation home as a second permanent Household.
A temporary trip is not necessarily treated the same way as permanent out-of-home sharing. Disney provides separate travel and Household-update options, so a second location should not automatically be assumed to be a violation.
Extra Member is not simply permission to keep sharing the password
Extra Member is a paid seat attached to an eligible Disney+ subscription. The invited person uses their own email address and password, rather than continuing to use the account holder’s credentials.
Disney says an Extra Member receives:
- One separate login.
- One profile.
- Personalized watch history and recommendations.
- Access to the same content and features available under the account holder’s plan.
- The same video and audio quality as the account holder.
- Streaming or downloading on one device at a time.
It is not a second full Disney+ account. The one-profile and one-device-at-a-time limits matter if several people at the other address want to watch or maintain separate profiles.
Who can become an Extra Member?
According to Disney’s Extra Member guidance, the invited person must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Live in the same country or region as the account holder.
- Not already have an active Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscription.
There is a limit of one Extra Member per Disney+ or eligible bundle subscription. The account holder—not the invited person—is billed for the add-on.

Which plans do not support Extra Member?
Disney says Extra Member is currently unavailable on several bundle types, including:
- Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited Bundle plans.
- Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle plans.
- Bundle plans with NFL+ Premium.
If you switch to an ineligible plan, Disney says the Extra Member add-on will be removed. Check eligibility before moving to a more expensive bundle; a higher price does not necessarily preserve the out-of-home access option.

Choose Extra Member when
- Only one person outside the Household needs access.
- You want the account holder to keep centralized billing.
- Both people are in the same country or region.
- The invited person does not already pay for Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN.
- The existing subscription is eligible.
Choose a separate subscription when
- More than one person at the other address needs access.
- The user needs multiple profiles or more independence.
- The user already has an active Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscription.
- The account is on an excluded bundle.
- The account holder may cancel, change plans, or stop paying.
A standalone Disney+ With Ads plan costs $5 more per month than a $6.99 Extra Member seat. A standalone Premium plan costs $9 more than a $9.99 Premium Extra Member seat. That premium buys independent billing and account control, not merely access attached to someone else’s subscription.

How to add an Extra Member
- Use a mobile or desktop web browser and sign in at DisneyPlus.com.
- Open the account-management page or the Extra Member flow.
- Follow Disney’s invitation and billing instructions.
- Have the invited person use their own email address and create a password.
Disney’s public Help Center does not expose every current menu label, so the exact wording and placement may vary by plan, account state, and billing provider.

What happens if the account holder removes the Extra Member?
Removing the add-on takes effect at the end of the current Extra Member billing period. The invited person then loses access but can create an independent subscription with their own login and billing details.
Be careful when replacing an invited person. Disney’s guidance indicates that removing or replacing the individual does not necessarily cancel the add-on itself. The account holder must remove the Extra Member add-on to stop the recurring charge.

A legitimate traveler, recent mover, or member of the primary residence may still encounter a Household warning because Disney associates devices and usage with a primary location.
- Traveling temporarily: choose “I’M AWAY FROM HOME” and follow the verification instructions.
- You moved: choose “UPDATE HOUSEHOLD” when that option appears and follow the prompts.
- Review access: check connected devices and account activity for unfamiliar users.
- Secure the account: change the password if someone unauthorized may still be using it.
- Contact Disney support: do so if a legitimate Household cannot be restored through the available prompts.
The options and verification steps can vary by device, app version, and account state. Disney’s published materials do not promise a fixed number of resets or one universal verification method.
Do not treat a VPN, credential resale, or another location-obscuring workaround as authorized access. Those methods do not create an approved Extra Member relationship and may conflict with Disney’s account terms.
College students, second homes, and frequent travelers
Disney’s published definition focuses on the primary residence and the people who live there. Its travel guidance addresses temporary use away from home. Therefore, a short trip should be handled through the travel flow, while a student or family member who permanently lives at another address may need an Extra Member seat or a separate subscription.
Disney does not publish a blanket exemption that automatically covers every college student, second home, or long-term stay. These cases are practical interpretations of Disney’s Household and travel language, not guaranteed exceptions.
Is Disney automatically charging every password sharer?
No such universal automatic charge or single cutoff date is established by the supplied official terms. Disney says it may analyze account use for compliance and may limit or terminate access if it determines the Household rules have been violated. That gives Disney enforcement discretion; it does not mean every account sharing outside the home will be charged immediately or stopped on the same day.

The practical choice
For one eligible person living elsewhere, Extra Member is the least expensive authorized option: $6.99 on Disney+ With Ads or $9.99 on Disney+ Premium, with higher prices on eligible bundles. A separate subscription is usually more suitable when several people need access, the user wants control of billing, the account is on an excluded bundle, or the user already maintains a qualifying Disney, Hulu, or ESPN subscription.
If the added cost is not worth the service—or the subscription existed mainly for someone outside the Household—canceling may be the simplest answer. Before doing so, verify whether Disney bills you directly or through a third party, since cancellation steps and effective dates can differ.
