Some free YouTube Music users are seeing a limit on how often they can open full song lyrics, followed by blurred text and a prompt to subscribe. Google has described the change as an experiment affecting a small percentage of ad-supported users—not a permanent, universal policy. Reports of the test emerged in February 2026.
What the lyrics limit looks like
For affected accounts, the lyrics panel may initially show the full lyrics. After repeated views, users have reported seeing a counter—often described as five views remaining. Once that allowance is used, only part of the lyrics may remain visible while the rest is blurred or covered by a Premium prompt.
Five is a commonly reported test limit, not a rule YouTube has published for every account. Google reportedly said limits can vary during the experiment. There is no reliable evidence that the allowance resets daily, applies separately to each song, or works the same way on mobile, web, desktop, and other devices.

Google told news outlets it was “running an experiment with a small percentage of ad-supported users” that could affect repeated access to lyrics, and said the vast majority of users globally would not see a change. That is the clearest distinction for readers: some free users have encountered a lyrics restriction, but Google has not announced a permanent worldwide paywall.

YouTube Music’s public Premium benefits documentation lists features such as ad-free music, background play, audio-only playback, and downloads. It does not explicitly list lyrics as a permanent Premium-only benefit. The reported restriction therefore appears to be an experiment rather than a clearly documented change to the published subscription benefits.
Different accounts may behave differently, even on the same app version or device. The test’s precise country, account, and device reach has not been established publicly, and the reported behavior should not be treated as proof that every free user is affected.

A missing lyric is not always a paywall
Look for the pattern. A counter, blurred lyrics, or an upgrade prompt after repeated lyric views points toward the reported experiment. If one track simply has no lyrics, that may instead reflect song-level catalog, metadata, or rights limitations. If the lyrics panel disappears, fails to load, or shows an error, it could be an app problem.
YouTube notes that product experiences can vary by country or region, and music availability can be affected by rights arrangements. Its help documentation on audience restrictions describes restrictions that can apply to music content. A subscription is not a guarantee that lyrics exist for every track.

What would paying get you?
YouTube Music Premium is a music subscription; YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium as well as benefits for regular YouTube. Officially documented YouTube Music Premium benefits include ad-free music, background listening, audio-only playback, and downloads. Google has not clearly added lyrics to that published list.
February 2026 coverage reported US prices of about $10.99 per month for YouTube Music Premium and about $14 per month for YouTube Premium. Treat those as reported snapshots, not guaranteed current prices: country, taxes, promotions, eligibility, and billing through an app store can change the amount. Check the live YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium checkout page before deciding.

Paying makes more sense if you also want the broader bundle—such as ad-free YouTube, background play, or downloads. If you use YouTube Music mainly to read lyrics occasionally, a subscription solely to regain access may be poor value, particularly while the restriction remains an experiment.

- Wait and check again. Account experiences may differ because this is a test, but waiting is not a guaranteed fix.
- Try another lyrics source. Musixmatch, Genius, or Shazam may offer lyrics independently. Catalog coverage, synchronization, ads, permissions, and regional availability vary; these services do not restore lyrics inside YouTube Music.
- Consider another streaming service. Spotify’s current help page says lyrics are available to Free and Premium users, while noting that availability depends on market, device, track, and rights-holder agreements. Spotify previously tested restricting lyrics for some free users in 2024 and later restored access; that precedent does not predict what YouTube will do.
- Compare the whole service, not just lyrics. Apple Music and Amazon Music are paid alternatives; compare their live prices, catalogs, devices, and features for your location. A switch may not solve a specific song’s rights or availability gap.
- Send feedback for apparent errors. Use YouTube Music’s in-app Help & feedback option if lyrics fail unexpectedly, especially if you are a subscriber or the issue affects many tracks.
There is no verified reset or workaround for a free account placed in the test. Clearing cache, reinstalling, or switching devices should not be expected to restore views; avoid unofficial modified apps or attempts to bypass the restriction.

If you already subscribe and lyrics are missing
- Confirm YouTube Music is signed into the Google account that holds your subscription.
- Check whether the plan is YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium.
- Update the app, then try the same track on another device or the web player.
- Test several songs. One track without lyrics is not proof of a subscription problem.
- If lyrics are missing across many songs, contact YouTube support or send in-app feedback.
Lyrics can matter for accessibility, language learning, singing, and musicianship, not just casual sing-alongs. Even a Premium account may encounter gaps in availability or accuracy, so the relevant question is whether the issue is a test limit, an account problem, or a particular track’s catalog status.
Will the restriction become permanent?
That is not confirmed. Google has called the measure an experiment and has not announced a final global policy. Spotify’s earlier reversal shows that lyrics restrictions can provoke backlash and be reversed, but it does not establish what YouTube will decide. For now, the accurate description is that YouTube Music is testing limited lyric access for some free users.
