If you have a Roku TV, open Home → Settings → System → Time → Sleep timer. Choose 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, or 3 hours. If you use a Roku Streaming Stick or Roku player connected to another television, use that television’s own sleep-timer control instead—the built-in Roku Sleep Timer is a Roku TV feature.
These instructions reflect Roku’s current menu and shortcut guidance, although labels and Home-screen layouts can vary by model, region, and Roku OS version.
How to set the Sleep Timer from Roku Settings
- Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
- Scroll to Settings and select it.
- Choose System.
- Select Time.
- Choose Sleep timer.
- Select the desired interval: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, or 3 hours.
The countdown begins after you select the interval. Roku documents these preset choices in the Settings menu; it does not provide an arbitrary number-of-minutes field there.

First, confirm that you have a Roku TV
A Roku TV has Roku software built into the television itself. TCL, Hisense, onn., Philips, Roku-brand televisions, and other models can use the Roku TV Sleep Timer.
A Roku Streaming Stick or Roku player is a separate device connected to a television through HDMI. Its Roku menus generally do not include the Roku TV Sleep Timer. In that setup, open the television manufacturer’s settings and look for options such as Sleep Timer, Auto Power Off, or Power Timer.
Roku’s shortcut documentation specifically identifies Sleep Timer as Roku TV only. This distinction is the most common reason people cannot find the setting.

Faster ways to open Sleep Timer
Use the Home-screen shortcut
Many Roku TVs provide a Sleep Timer tile near the bottom of the Home-screen app grid:

- Move to the Home-screen app grid.
- Scroll to the bottom of the grid.
- Select Sleep Timer and follow the on-screen instructions.
On some layouts, moving upward from the top of the grid takes you quickly to the bottom shortcut area. Roku’s Home-screen presentation has changed during 2026, so the tile’s position and appearance may differ from older screenshots.
Show the shortcut if it is hidden
If the tile is missing, it may simply be turned off:
Home → Settings → Home screen → Shortcuts
Find Sleep Timer and press OK to show it. Roku provides additional details in its shortcut visibility instructions.

- Press the Star/asterisk (*) button.
- Choose Sleep timer from the Options menu.
- Select a duration.
This is convenient when you are already watching something, but it is not universal. Some apps assign the Star button their own function. If Sleep Timer does not appear, return to Home → Settings → System → Time → Sleep timer.
Use a voice command
On a compatible Roku TV, press and hold the Voice button on a Roku voice remote and try a command such as:
- “Turn off TV in 30 minutes.”
- “Set sleep timer for an hour.”
- “Turn off TV at 11 PM.”
- “Set sleep timer for 1:30 AM.”
Voice features depend on the television, remote, language, region, app, and account or device configuration. Not every Roku remote has a microphone. If yours does not, the Roku mobile app may provide voice control when supported. Roku also identifies a compatible Roku TV Voice Remote as an option.

Home → Settings → System → Time → Sleep timer
Choose a different interval to replace the current timer. To stop it, select the cancellation option shown on screen. Depending on the software version, it may be labeled Cancel, Off, or something similar.
Only one Roku Sleep Timer can be active at a time. Setting a new interval changes the existing timer rather than creating a second countdown.

What does Roku’s Sleep Timer turn off?
Roku describes the feature as powering off the Roku TV screen after the selected period. It can be used while watching internet streaming content, over-the-air live TV, or an external device.

The timer is not limited to the input that was active when you set it. Roku’s support material and TV guides indicate that it can remain in effect after you change sources. For example, switching from a streaming app to a game console does not necessarily cancel the timer.
However, do not assume that every connected device also powers down. A cable box, console, Blu-ray player, or other HDMI device may remain on. Its behavior depends on the device and HDMI-CEC settings. The safe expectation is that the Roku TV display turns off.

- Check the device type. Confirm that Roku is built into the television. An external Roku player normally requires the TV’s own timer.
- Look for the Home-screen tile. Scroll to the bottom of the app grid.
- Show hidden shortcuts. Open Settings → Home screen → Shortcuts and enable Sleep Timer.
- Try the Star menu. Test it while watching a different app or an external input, since some apps use Star for another purpose.
- Record your device details. Open Settings → System → About and note the TV model and Roku OS version.
- Restart or update the TV. Do this after recording the current details, because menu availability can vary by model and software version.
Some Roku Community discussions suggest that store or demo mode may be associated with missing time-related settings in particular setups. Treat that as model-specific community troubleshooting, not as a universal explanation or guaranteed fix. If the menu remains unavailable, contact Roku or the television manufacturer with the model and OS information.

Can I set a custom number of minutes from the Roku TV menu?
The documented Settings menu offers five presets: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, and 3 hours. Supported voice control can also accept certain clock-time commands.
Will a Roku Sleep Timer pause Netflix, YouTube, or another app?
