If you want a short break, use Netflix’s Pause Membership option when it is available. If you want to stop paying until you decide to return, cancel the membership instead. Deleting the Netflix app, signing out, or removing Netflix from a television does not stop billing.
Netflix says paused or canceled accounts can retain important account information for a limited period, but the exact option available depends on your plan, payment method, and billing arrangement.
Choose the right kind of break

Netflix’s official instructions are available in its Help Center cancellation guide. The labels and available controls may vary by account, language, plan, and payment provider.
How to pause Netflix
Netflix describes a Pause for 1 Month option on the cancellation page. To check whether your account qualifies:

- Open Netflix in a web browser and sign in.
- Open the Account page.
- Open the cancellation or membership-management page.
- Select Pause for 1 Month, if it appears.
- Confirm the pause.
You can generally continue using the membership until the next billing date. At that point, Netflix says the account will not be charged and the pause will begin. During the pause, you can browse Netflix and add titles to My List, but you cannot stream or download content.
Pause limitations
- The pause is initially for one month and can be extended only up to a total of three months.
- It is not available on the Basic plan.
- It may be unavailable for direct-debit payments, gift cards, and some partner-billed accounts.
- It is temporary, not an indefinite suspension.
- Netflix automatically resumes the membership and billing after the pause unless you extend it or cancel.
How to extend a pause
About one week before the account automatically resumes, Netflix says an Extend Pause option should appear in the Ready to watch? banner on the Account page.
- Sign in through a web or mobile browser.
- Open Account.
- Find the Ready to watch? banner.
- Select Extend Pause.
- Confirm the additional month.
The total pause cannot exceed three months. If the option is missing, you may have reached the limit or your account may not qualify.
How to resume a paused membership
- Open Netflix in a web or mobile browser.
- Go to Account.
- Select Unpause Now in the Ready to watch? banner.
- Confirm the change.
Unpausing is not free: Netflix says it charges the current plan price immediately, changes the billing date, and restores streaming immediately. If Netflix is included in a package from another provider, reactivation may take up to 24 hours.
How to cancel Netflix instead
Cancel if you do not know when you will return, if the pause option is unavailable, or if you want to avoid an automatic restart.

- Open Account.
- Choose Manage your membership or open the cancellation page.
- Select Cancel.
- Select Finish Cancellation.
- Keep the confirmation email.
Netflix normally lets you continue watching until the end of the current billing period. Check Payment History to confirm the relevant date. An account on hold may close immediately, while unused gift-card or promotional credit may allow access to continue until that balance is exhausted.
If Netflix is billed through a mobile carrier, internet provider, app store, or another partner, you may need to cancel through that provider. Follow the instructions shown on the Netflix Account page and check the partner’s billing account as well.

Removing Netflix from a phone, television, streaming device, or browser only removes local access. The same is true of signing out. Neither action stops subscription charges.
To stop billing, complete the official pause or cancellation flow and verify that Netflix displays a confirmation or sends a confirmation email.

How to take a behavioral break from Netflix
If the real goal is to stop opening Netflix, pausing or canceling may not be enough. Add friction to the devices and routines that trigger viewing:
- Sign out on televisions, phones, tablets, browsers, and streaming devices.
- Delete the app from the devices you use impulsively.
- Remove Netflix shortcuts and saved passwords.
- Use the device’s screen-time, app-limit, or parental-control tools.
- Change the account password if other household members can restart the membership.
- Choose a specific alternative, such as reading, exercise, podcasts, or a scheduled social activity.
- Set a definite review date if you plan to return.
These measures affect access and habits, not billing. You must separately pause or cancel the membership if you want charges to stop.

Protect the account after cancellation
A canceled account can still be accessible on devices where someone remains signed in. Netflix recommends changing the password and selecting the option to sign out of all devices, especially when several people use the account.
This distinction matters: cancellation stops the membership’s future billing, while password and device security help prevent an unwanted person from restarting it.

What happens to your account after cancellation?
Netflix says it retains specified information for 24 months after an account closes, including viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history, and certain game saves. Its restart guidance also says profiles, My List, game saves, and payment information may remain available when an account is restarted.
This is not a guarantee that every setting, download, device login, or item will remain unchanged. Downloaded titles do not become permanently playable, and the subscription itself is no longer active. Waiting beyond the retention period, using a different email address, or starting a new account may prevent the previous account information from being restored.

How to restart Netflix later
To give yourself the best chance of recovering the previous account setup, use Netflix’s official restart membership instructions:
- Go to Netflix and choose Sign In.
- Do not choose Get Started, Join to Watch, or Join Now if you want to recover the old account.
- Select Undo Cancel Request or Restart Membership if Netflix displays it.
- If necessary, open the Account page and choose Restart Membership.
- Confirm or update payment and account details when prompted.
If Netflix cannot find the account, check for a typing error or try another email address you may have used. If too much time has passed, the old account information may no longer be available. Creating a new account will not necessarily restore the former profiles, My List, or game data.

Troubleshooting common problems
The Pause button is missing
Pausing is conditional. Check whether you are on the Basic plan, whether Netflix is billed through a partner, and whether your payment method is supported. If the control still does not appear, cancel the membership if your goal is to stop future charges.
The Cancel button is missing
Your membership may be managed by a mobile, internet, app-store, or other billing partner. Use the Account page instructions and cancel through the provider responsible for charging you.

That is normally expected: access usually continues through the current billing period. Check Payment History and your cancellation confirmation. Gift-card or promotional balances may extend access, while accounts on hold may close immediately.
Someone restarted the account
Change the Netflix password and sign out all devices. Also secure the email account associated with Netflix if another person can access it.
Netflix cannot find my old account
Try the email address originally used, check for spelling mistakes, and use Netflix’s restart flow rather than creating a new account. If the account has been closed beyond Netflix’s stated retention period, its previous information may no longer be recoverable.
