Knives Out did get a measurable burst of attention after Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery arrived on Netflix—but the original film did not become a broad Netflix title in the U.S. The renewed interest was most visible in December 2025 across digital storefronts and regional charts. As of the latest U.S. availability check on July 30, 2026, viewers could find Rian Johnson’s 2019 mystery through Peacock, YouTube TV, and several rental or purchase services, while Netflix remained the home of the new sequel.
Wake Up Dead Man gave Benoit Blanc a major Netflix moment
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery began select theatrical screenings on November 26, 2025, before becoming available to stream on Netflix on December 12. Netflix reported that the third Benoit Blanc mystery reached No. 1 on its English-language film list with 20.2 million views in the week reported December 16.

It stayed at No. 1 the following week, with Netflix reporting 20.9 million views in the report published December 23. The film was written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daniel Craig as Blanc alongside Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, and Daryl McCormack. A high-profile new chapter naturally gave audiences a reason to revisit Blanc’s first case. The timing strongly suggests that Wake Up Dead Man helped revive interest in Knives Out, particularly among viewers catching up with the franchise. But the available evidence shows an association in time and chart activity—not a controlled measurement proving that the sequel caused every additional viewing or purchase.

The original started appearing on digital and regional charts
In the period following the sequel’s release, Knives Out appeared on charts tracked across Amazon Prime, the Apple TV Store, and smaller regional services. Reports also placed it at No. 1 on the Apple TV Store in Singapore across multiple days and at No. 1 in Hong Kong. Those results indicate renewed attention, but they need to be labeled accurately.
A storefront ranking is not the same thing as a subscription-streaming audience figure. A film can rise on a digital rental or purchase chart because people are renting or buying it, while a different chart may reflect clicks, watchlists, or other user activity. International rankings in Singapore and Hong Kong also cannot be treated as evidence of an equivalent U.S. surge. (Reported international chart activity)
What “surging on streaming” actually means
The phrase can describe several different signals:
- Subscription streaming: Viewing through a service such as Peacock, where access is included with a qualifying plan.
- Transactional viewing: Paid rentals or purchases through stores such as Amazon Video or the Apple TV Store.
- Aggregator movement: Rankings compiled from user activity or availability data, such as JustWatch charts.
- Search and social interest: Evidence that people are looking for or discussing a film, without necessarily watching it.
- International storefront performance: A ranking in one country that may reflect local licensing, promotions, and audience behavior.
Netflix’s 20.2 million and 20.9 million figures apply to Wake Up Dead Man, not the 2019 film. They should not be combined with storefront or aggregator rankings to create a single “streaming surge” number.

Why Knives Out was not automatically added to Netflix
The distribution history of the franchise is the key to the apparent contradiction. Knives Out was released theatrically in 2019 and remains subject to licensing arrangements that can vary by country and by time. Netflix later became the home of the subsequent Benoit Blanc films, including Glass Onion and Wake Up Dead Man.
That later arrangement does not automatically put the original film in Netflix’s catalog everywhere. Netflix can distribute a new sequel while the earlier movie is available through another company’s subscription service, a digital store, or a different Netflix territory.
For that reason, “Knives Out is not on Netflix” is too broad a worldwide statement. The more accurate conclusion is that its availability is territory- and window-dependent. In the cited U.S. check on July 30, 2026, it was not listed on Netflix.

Where to watch Knives Out in the U.S.

Physical DVD and Blu-ray listings were also indicated. If the goal is to watch only the original movie, a one-time rental may be more economical than starting a broader subscription. Peacock makes more sense for viewers who also want its wider catalog, while YouTube TV is difficult to justify solely for one film because it is a larger live-TV bundle.
How the three films are distributed differently
The franchise is easiest to understand as a mixture of theatrical, licensing, and Netflix arrangements:
- Knives Out (2019): The original theatrical release, with availability changing by territory and licensing window. In the U.S. check cited above, it was on Peacock and available to rent or buy.
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery: A later Benoit Blanc film distributed through Netflix, illustrating the company’s role in the franchise’s newer installments.

Therefore, U.S. viewers seeking the complete Benoit Blanc experience may need more than one service—or a separate digital rental or purchase for the first film.

The strongest evidence for a surge belongs to the weeks immediately after Wake Up Dead Man debuted on December 12, 2025. The reported international chart activity supports the idea that the sequel renewed interest in the original.

The distribution irony
Netflix created a new wave of demand for the Benoit Blanc franchise, but other services captured much of the opportunity to watch the original in the United States. The sequel’s success made the first film newly relevant without turning it into a Netflix-wide subscription title.
That distinction matters when deciding where to watch. Netflix is the clear destination for Wake Up Dead Man; for Knives Out, U.S. viewers should check Peacock first, then compare the current rental and purchase prices across the listed digital stores.
