Start by identifying which kind of black screen you have. If your TV menus and other apps work but Hulu video is black, fully close Hulu, restart the device, update the app and system software, clear Hulu’s cached data, and reinstall the app if necessary. If the TV says No signal or the entire HDMI input is black, troubleshoot the power, input, HDMI connection, and display path instead.
The fastest diagnosis is to press Home or Menu. If the menu appears, open another streaming app. If other apps play normally, the problem is probably limited to Hulu, its cached data, your account session, or a title-specific playback issue. If the TV remains black outside Hulu, skip to the HDMI and no-signal troubleshooting section.
First, identify what is actually black
| What you see | Most likely troubleshooting path |
|---|---|
| Hulu menus appear, but the video area is black | Close Hulu, restart the device, update Hulu and the operating system, clear app data, then reinstall Hulu. |
| Hulu audio plays but there is no picture | Check for an HDMI, HDCP, TV-input, or display-device problem, especially when using a Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, Apple TV, console, or other external player. |
| The TV says “No signal” or is black before Hulu opens | Check the selected HDMI input, power, cable seating, HDMI port, and any switch, receiver, or soundbar between the player and TV. |
| Hulu works on another device but not in a browser | Clear the browser cache, test another current browser, disable playback-affecting extensions temporarily, and update the browser and operating system. |
| Hulu is black on several devices | Test the network and another service, then check whether the problem is account-wide or service-side and contact Hulu support if needed. |
These are diagnostic patterns rather than guarantees. A black screen can result from corrupted app data, an expired session, an unsupported browser environment, a network or proxy issue, an HDMI/HDCP handshake failure, or a Hulu-side problem.
The quickest fixes, in order
1. Fully close Hulu
Back out of the video and reopen it first. If that does not work, fully close Hulu using the device’s app switcher or force-close command. Simply returning to the home screen may leave the app running in the background with the failed playback session intact.

Reopen Hulu and try the same title. Then test a different title. If only one episode or film is black, note its name, episode number, and whether audio or subtitles appear; that information will help Hulu support distinguish a title-specific problem from a device failure.
2. Restart the device properly
Restart the TV, computer, phone, tablet, game console, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or other device running Hulu.
For an external streaming device, disconnect its power cable, wait about one minute, and reconnect it. Unplugging only the HDMI cable does not necessarily reboot the player. If the player is powered through a TV USB port, use the supplied power adapter or another manufacturer-approved direct power source when possible.
3. Update Hulu and the device
Open the device’s official app store and check for a Hulu update. Also install available updates for:

Out-of-date software can cause playback, authentication, and HDMI/HDCP compatibility problems. Restart the device after installing updates, then test Hulu again.
4. Clear Hulu’s cache or app data
On supported TVs and streaming platforms, open the device’s application settings and look for Hulu’s Clear cache, Clear data, or equivalent option. Labels vary by platform.

Clearing data can sign you out and remove local settings or downloads, so make sure you know how you normally sign in before using it. After clearing the data, launch Hulu, sign in again, and test both the original title and another title.
5. Reinstall Hulu
If closing, restarting, updating, and clearing data do not help, uninstall Hulu and reinstall it from the platform’s official app store. Reinstallation replaces damaged application files and creates a fresh app session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis may remove local preferences or downloads. It also does not fix a TV-wide no-signal problem, so do not repeatedly reinstall Hulu if the screen is black on other inputs or the TV reports no signal.
Fixing a black Hulu screen in Chrome, Edge, Safari, or another browser
- Close the Hulu tab and quit the browser completely.
- Reopen the browser and clear cached data for Hulu. If your browser permits it, clear data for the Hulu site rather than deleting every saved item.
- Sign in again and retry the video.
- Test another current, supported browser.
- Temporarily disable extensions that block scripts, alter privacy settings, change network routing, or affect video playback.
- Update the browser and the computer’s operating system.
If Hulu works in another browser, the original browser’s cache, extension configuration, or compatibility is the likely cause. If Hulu fails in every browser but works on a phone or TV, focus on the computer rather than repeatedly changing your Hulu password.
Do not use a VPN, proxy, or anonymizing service during testing. These services can change the apparent location or interfere with streaming authorization. Test over a normal household connection first.

- Select the correct input. Use the TV remote to cycle through HDMI inputs and select the port where the streaming device is connected.
- Reseat the HDMI cable. Remove it from both the TV and the player, then push it firmly back into place.
- Try another HDMI port. A single port can fail or have a compatibility issue.
- Connect directly to the TV. Temporarily bypass an HDMI switch, AV receiver, soundbar, capture device, or other intermediary.
- Use the correct power source. Prefer the power adapter and cable supplied with the streaming device. A TV USB port may not provide the power the device needs.
- Restart both ends. Power-cycle the TV and streaming device, reconnect the HDMI cable, select the correct input, and test again.
- Test another display. If possible, connect the streaming device to another HDMI television. This helps separate a player problem from a TV or port problem.
HDCP is part of the protected connection between a streaming device, TV, and content. An HDMI or HDCP handshake failure can produce a black screen even though the app appears to be running. Updating the player and TV firmware, removing intermediary equipment, changing ports, and restarting both devices are more useful first steps than immediately buying new hardware.
For the Chromecast with Google TV 4K, Google specifies a compatible HDMI extension cable supporting 4K and HDMI 2.0 for the relevant setup. For Google TV Streamer 4K, the relevant extension-cable scenario calls for HDMI 2.1. Those specifications apply to those devices and situations; they do not mean every Hulu viewer needs a replacement cable.
Check whether the network is responsible
Open another streaming app or website on the same device. If several services buffer, fail to load, or lose their connection, restart the modem and router according to your internet provider’s instructions, then retry Hulu.
If every other service works and only Hulu fails, a general internet outage is less likely. The remaining possibilities include Hulu’s app state, account session, device compatibility, a title-specific issue, a proxy/VPN, or a service-specific problem.
Testing Hulu on both Wi-Fi and cellular data can help on a phone or tablet, but be aware of mobile data limits. On a TV or streaming device, testing another network or a temporary phone hotspot can also separate a home-network problem from a Hulu or device problem.

Check the title, profile, and account
Try another title
Play a different Hulu program, preferably an on-demand title rather than live programming. The results usually point to one of three paths:
- Only one title is black: record the title, season, episode, time, device, and whether sound or subtitles work. The issue may be associated with that program or playback session.
- Every title is black on one device: focus on the app, cache, browser, operating system, HDMI path, and device compatibility.
- Every title is black on multiple devices and networks: capture the exact behavior and contact Hulu, because the problem may involve the account or a service-side incident.
When Disney+ is involved
Eligible Disney Bundle subscribers in the United States may be able to watch Hulu content through the Hulu hub inside Disney+. Availability depends on the subscription, profile linkage, device, and supported features. Hulu Live TV and certain add-ons may still require the standalone Hulu app while the unified Disney+ and Hulu experience continues to roll out.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If standalone Hulu is black but your subscription qualifies, test the same title through the Hulu area in Disney+. If Disney+ is black while standalone Hulu works, use the standalone Hulu app while checking updates and profile/account linkage. Disney+ is not a universal replacement for Hulu, and a title’s availability can differ by plan and location.
Device-specific checklists
Smart TV or game console
- Fully exit or force-close Hulu.
- Restart the TV or console.
- Update Hulu and system software.
- Clear Hulu cache or data if the platform offers that control.
- Reinstall Hulu.
- If the black screen occurs through an external input, follow the HDMI steps instead of repeating app reinstalls.
Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, or Google TV Streamer
- Confirm the TV’s selected HDMI input.
- Disconnect the streaming device’s power for about one minute, then reconnect it.
- Use the supplied adapter or a suitable direct power source.
- Reseat the HDMI cable and try another port.
- Bypass switches, receivers, and soundbars.
- Update Hulu, the streaming device, and the TV firmware.
- Reinstall Hulu only after checking power and the HDMI path.
Windows or Mac
- Close Hulu and quit the browser.
- Clear Hulu’s site or browser cache.
- Retry in another current browser.
- Temporarily disable playback, privacy, script, and network-routing extensions.
- Update the browser and operating system.
- Test Hulu on another device to isolate the computer from the account or service.
Phone or tablet
- Fully close Hulu.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Update Hulu and the operating system.
- Clear app data if the operating system supports it, or uninstall and reinstall Hulu.
- Test Wi-Fi and cellular data where practical and permitted by your data plan.
What not to do first
- Do not factory-reset the TV or streaming device immediately. A factory reset erases apps, settings, and device data and forces you through setup again. Reserve it for a last resort after software, power, HDMI, and account tests.
- Do not buy a new TV or streaming stick before isolating the fault. Test another HDMI port, direct connection, power source, display, and app installation first.
- Do not assume a new HDMI cable fixes every black screen. Cables matter when the symptoms point to a physical signal or HDCP path, not when Hulu alone has a black video area while menus and other apps work.
- Do not declare a Hulu outage based only on an outage dashboard. Third-party reports can be useful clues, but confirm with controlled tests on another device or network and with Hulu support.
When to contact Hulu
Contact Hulu when the problem persists after the relevant steps, especially if all titles are black across multiple devices or networks. Before contacting support, collect:
- the device make and model;
- the Hulu app version or browser name and version;
- the device operating-system or firmware version;
- whether menus and other apps work;
- whether audio, subtitles, or captions appear;
- whether the problem affects one title or every title;
- whether Hulu works on another device or network;
- the exact error message, if any; and
- the date and approximate time of the failure.
These details matter because device compatibility, app behavior, and the Disney+ integration can change. Hulu’s help and contact channels are the appropriate next step when the self-service process does not resolve an account- or service-wide problem.
Should you replace the streaming device?
Only consider replacement after the existing player fails across more than one display or HDMI port, has current firmware, receives proper power, and still fails after Hulu is reinstalled. A streaming media player can be a reasonable last resort for a demonstrably failing or incompatible device, but it should not be the first response to a Hulu-only black screen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Hulu black but the TV menu works?
The display is probably functioning, so start with Hulu: fully close the app, restart the device, update Hulu and the operating system, clear Hulu’s cache or data, and reinstall the app if necessary.
Why do I hear Hulu audio but see a black screen?
Audio without video can indicate an HDMI, HDCP, TV-input, firmware, or display-path problem. Reseat the HDMI cable, try another port, connect the player directly to the TV, use proper power, and restart both the TV and player.
Will buying a new HDMI cable fix Hulu?
Only if the symptoms point to an HDMI signal or HDCP problem. Test the existing cable, another HDMI port, a direct connection, and the correct input first. An HDMI cable will not normally fix an app-only failure.
Can I watch Hulu through Disney+ instead?
Eligible Disney Bundle subscribers in the United States may access some Hulu content through Disney+. Availability depends on the plan, profile, device, location, and feature. Hulu Live TV and add-ons may still require the standalone Hulu app.
Should I factory-reset my TV?
No. Treat a factory reset as a last resort because it erases device data and requires setup again. Complete the app, update, cache, power, HDMI, and account tests first.
The Bottom Line
For a Hulu-only black screen, fully close Hulu, restart the device, update everything, clear Hulu or browser data, and reinstall the app. For a TV-wide black screen, “No signal,” or audio without video, troubleshoot the HDMI input, cable, power, ports, firmware, and intermediary equipment. Testing another title and another device tells you whether the failure is local, account-specific, or service-wide.
