Watch the former Netflix Marvel programs in Defenders Saga release order for your first viewing. The 13-season sequence introduces each hero before The Defenders, places Frank Castle’s solo series after his Daredevil debut, and provides the clearest preparation for Daredevil: Born Again.
The short answer
For a first watch, view the six former Netflix Marvel series in release order. That means watching all 13 seasons as one connected Defenders Saga, beginning with Daredevil and ending with Jessica Jones Season 3.
Release order preserves the heroes’ introductions, crossover timing, and character development. You do not need to interrupt the street-level story to watch every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Choose Marvel’s official chronological MCU order only if you are already watching the entire MCU in in-universe timeline order.
Netflix Marvel shows watch order
- Daredevil Season 1
- Jessica Jones Season 1
- Daredevil Season 2
- Luke Cage Season 1
- Iron Fist Season 1
- The Defenders Season 1
- The Punisher Season 1
- Jessica Jones Season 2
- Luke Cage Season 2
- Iron Fist Season 2
- Daredevil Season 3
- The Punisher Season 2
- Jessica Jones Season 3
This is the most straightforward order for viewers watching only the former Netflix material. It follows the original rollout and places The Defenders after all four principal heroes have been introduced. It also places Frank Castle’s solo series after his important introduction in Daredevil Season 2.

What is the Defenders Saga?
The Defenders Saga is the interconnected group of six live-action Marvel series originally associated with Netflix:
| Series | Seasons | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Daredevil | 3 | The narrative anchor. It establishes Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk, Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, and Hell’s Kitchen. |
| Jessica Jones | 3 | Introduces Jessica and provides important background for Luke Cage and the later Defenders relationships. |
| Luke Cage | 2 | Moves the story into Harlem and develops characters first seen through Jessica Jones. |
| Iron Fist | 2 | Introduces Danny Rand and the mythology that becomes especially important in The Defenders. |
| The Defenders | 1 | The crossover miniseries bringing Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist together. |
| The Punisher | 2 | Expands Frank Castle’s story after his introduction in Daredevil Season 2. |
Marvel described the original project as 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes across the interconnected shows. The shows do not all cross over to the same degree, but they share characters, locations, organizations, consequences, and a broader New York setting. For that reason, watching the six series in release order is more useful than treating them as six unrelated superhero programs.
Why release order works better for a first watch
The release-order list is a production-and-story recommendation, not a claim that every episode occurs in precisely the same chronological sequence as its release date.
- It introduces characters before they become part of the crossover. The Defenders is more effective after you know Matt, Jessica, Luke, and Danny individually.
- It protects character reveals and relationships. Later seasons assume that viewers have seen earlier developments.
- It handles Frank Castle correctly. His story begins in Daredevil Season 2, before continuing in The Punisher.
- It avoids unnecessary interruptions. You can watch the Defenders shows without stopping for MCU films that are not essential to their immediate plots.
The order is especially suitable if your goal is to understand Daredevil: Born Again or to experience the former Netflix shows as a self-contained street-level corner of Marvel.

Marvel’s current MCU Complete Timeline takes a different approach. Its guide, dated March 26, 2026, places individual television seasons among the MCU films rather than presenting the Defenders shows as one uninterrupted block.
For the former Netflix seasons and the nearby MCU entries, Marvel’s published sequence is:
- Daredevil Season 1
- Jessica Jones Season 1
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- Ant-Man
- Daredevil Season 2
- Luke Cage Season 1
- Iron Fist Season 1
- The Defenders Season 1
- Captain America: Civil War
- Black Widow
- Black Panther
- Spider-Man: Homecoming
- The Punisher Season 1
- Doctor Strange
- Jessica Jones Season 2
- Luke Cage Season 2
- Iron Fist Season 2
- Daredevil Season 3
- Thor: Ragnarok
- The Punisher Season 2
- Jessica Jones Season 3
- Ant-Man and the Wasp
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Avengers: Endgame
Marvel’s complete list continues through later MCU projects and places Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 near the current end of the timeline, after Deadpool & Wolverine and before later listed entries.
Which timeline should you choose?
| Your goal | Best order |
|---|---|
| Watch the former Netflix shows for the first time | Defenders Saga release order |
| Prepare for Daredevil: Born Again | At minimum, Daredevil Seasons 1–3 and The Defenders; release order is preferable |
| Complete the entire MCU | Marvel’s official chronological timeline |
| Follow only the in-universe chronology | Marvel’s official chronological timeline |
Neither list makes the other “wrong.” Release order is the better viewing plan for this group of shows; Marvel’s chronological list is the appropriate reference for a complete MCU marathon.
What should you watch before Daredevil: Born Again?
Marvel describes Daredevil: Born Again as picking up after the original Daredevil television series. Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio returns as Wilson Fisk. Marvel’s current television listings also include Born Again in the MCU Complete Timeline.
For the strongest Matt Murdock context, watch:
- Daredevil Season 1
- Daredevil Season 2
- The Defenders Season 1
- Daredevil Season 3
Jessica Jones Season 1 is useful before The Defenders if you want the fullest introduction to the crossover cast. The Punisher Season 1 is worthwhile if you want Frank Castle’s complete arc, but it is not essential preparation for Matt’s central story. The remaining seasons deepen the shared world and supporting characters, although they are not equally necessary to follow Born Again.
Marvel’s inclusion of the former Netflix seasons in its official timeline is the clearest current indication of their place in the MCU. However, it is more precise to say that Marvel now includes these seasons in its official chronology and presents Born Again as continuing the original Daredevil story than to claim that every earlier Marvel Television production is mandatory viewing for the modern MCU.
Can you skip any of the shows?
For a complete Defenders Saga watch
Do not skip seasons merely to shorten the release-order list. The shows were designed as an interconnected sequence, even though some seasons contain more crossover material than others.

For a Daredevil-focused watch
Use this shorter route:
- Daredevil Season 1
- Daredevil Season 2
- The Defenders Season 1
- Daredevil Season 3
Add Jessica Jones Season 1 before The Defenders for more context about Jessica and Luke. Add The Punisher Season 1 after The Defenders if Frank Castle interests you. This shorter route is a compromise, not the best way to experience the full six-show saga.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can you watch the former Netflix Marvel shows?
Marvel announced that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher moved to Disney+ in the United States and several other markets beginning March 16, 2022. They should be described as former Netflix Marvel shows, not as shows currently guaranteed to be on Netflix.
Availability can change by country, subscription tier, licensing arrangement, and catalog updates. Check the Disney+ listing in your country or a current local streaming-search service before starting a binge. Do not assume that a U.S. availability statement applies to another market.
The series are mature superhero dramas rather than all-ages MCU adventures. Expect graphic violence, crime, sexual content, trauma-related themes, and strong language. The exact content rating and parental-control options depend on your country and the service you use.

Final recommendation
Start with Daredevil Season 1 and follow the 13-part release-order list. That is the clearest and most satisfying route through the Defenders Saga, and it gives you the context that matters most for Daredevil: Born Again without requiring a full MCU marathon. Switch to Marvel’s official chronological order only when your goal is to place these seasons inside the entire MCU timeline.
