The best movie newly added to the U.S. Prime Video lineup in April 2024 was The Holdovers, while Música was the month’s most original new release. The rest of the lineup mixed recent acclaimed cinema with older romances, comedies, war dramas, and period films. Here are the strongest picks by mood, with a clear distinction between new-to-Prime titles and movies that were actually released years earlier.
If you wanted one safe recommendation from Amazon Prime Video’s U.S. movie additions in April 2024, start with The Holdovers. Alexander Payne’s bittersweet school-break drama was the month’s strongest prestige selection. For something more distinctive and newly made for the service, choose Música, Rudy Mancuso’s sensory, Brazilian-American coming-of-age comedy.

This is a retrospective guide to movies that were newly available on the U.S. Prime Video lineup in April 2024. “New” does not necessarily mean released in theaters or produced that month: several of the most appealing choices were older films added to the catalog. Prime Video availability is temporary and differs by country, so these recommendations should not be read as confirmation that every title remains included with Prime Video now.
The best April 2024 Prime Video movies, ranked
1. The Holdovers (2023)
Best for: acclaimed drama, character-driven comedy, and an emotionally grounded movie night.

Set at a New England prep school during Christmas break, The Holdovers follows Paul Hunham, a prickly instructor forced to remain on campus with students who have nowhere else to go. His uneasy relationship with Angus, one of the remaining students, gradually expands to include Mary, the school cook, creating an unlikely three-person family.
Alexander Payne directs David Hemingson’s screenplay, with Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and newcomer Dominic Sessa at the center of the story. The film is funny without becoming glib and sentimental without abandoning its difficult characters. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Giamatti’s lead performance, Randolph’s supporting performance, film editing, and original screenplay. Randolph won the supporting-actress Oscar.
The Holdovers was a Focus Features release newly available through Prime Video—not an Amazon Original. It is the clearest choice for viewers who want the month’s most acclaimed and substantial recommendation rather than a disposable new streaming release.
Want to keep the month’s prestige pick? You can also look for The Holdovers DVD or Blu-ray if you prefer a physical copy, subject to current edition and retailer availability.
2. Música (2024)
Best for: inventive romance, Brazilian-American family stories, and a coming-of-age movie with a strong visual identity.
Available on Prime Video from April 4, 2024, Música is Rudy Mancuso’s semi-autobiographical feature debut. Mancuso plays an aspiring creator whose synesthesia makes ordinary experiences arrive as rhythms, patterns, and musical ideas. While navigating romantic uncertainty, family expectations, and Brazilian culture in Newark, New Jersey, he has to decide what kind of adult—and artist—he wants to become.
Camila Mendes and J.B. Smoove co-star. The film’s strongest idea is not simply its love triangle; it is the way Mancuso turns perception into cinematic form. Music and movement help express the protagonist’s inner life, while the Brazilian-American setting gives the story a cultural specificity that many conventional streaming romances lack.

Música is the best pick if “new” means something that feels genuinely fresh. It is also a good alternative for viewers who want a romance but would rather watch an inventive personal film than a familiar studio formula. Prime Video’s listing identifies it as a 2024, 91-minute, PG-13 movie.

Best for: teen romance and a lighter, younger-skewing watch.
Prime Video scheduled this teenage romantic comedy for April 5, 2024. Charithra Chandran, Sebastian Croft, and Tanner Buchanan lead a story built around a friendship disrupted by romantic feelings and a badly judged attempt to keep two people apart.
This is the most straightforward choice among the month’s newer romance titles. Its premise is more conventional than Música’s, but that can be an advantage when the goal is an uncomplicated high-school rom-com rather than a formally inventive drama. Choose it for a casual evening or a younger audience; choose Música when originality matters more than familiarity.
4. The Notebook (2004)
Best for: classic romance and emotionally direct date-night viewing.

The Notebook was not a new 2024 release. It was an older movie newly added to the April U.S. Prime Video lineup. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams play Noah Calhoun and Allie, whose relationship is tested by class differences, separation, and the passage of time in 1940s South Carolina.
Based on Nicholas Sparks’s popular novel, the film is the most accessible sweeping romance in this group. It is deliberately earnest, built around big emotional reversals and an enduring-love premise rather than ambiguity or restraint. That makes it a natural recommendation for viewers who want a familiar tearjerker or an adaptation to compare with the book.

If you enjoy comparing screen adaptations with their source material, The Notebook novel by Nicholas Sparks is the obvious companion read; availability and editions vary by retailer.
5. Boomerang (1992)
Best for: Eddie Murphy fans, adult romantic comedy, and early-1990s studio style.
Eddie Murphy stars as Marcus, a successful advertising executive and serial ladies’ man whose confidence is shaken after a merger places him under Jacqueline, played by Robin Givens. Halle Berry plays Angela, a more thoughtful romantic possibility in Marcus’s life.
The movie works as a charismatic rewatch rather than as a contemporary new release. Its central appeal is watching Murphy’s usual power position reverse: Marcus is accustomed to controlling romantic situations, then discovers what it feels like to be treated as one option among many. The ensemble, fashion, music, and glossy advertising-world setting provide much of the period flavor.
Viewers should approach Boomerang as a romantic comedy shaped by its 1992 conventions, not as a modern relationship drama. For a relaxed group watch, however, it brings considerably more star power and personality than its catalog-addition status might suggest.
6. Jarhead (2005)
Best for: psychologically focused war drama and stories about military life away from the battlefield.

Jarhead is not a conventional action film. Its emphasis is the mental and social experience of deployment: how waiting can become its own form of stress and how military identity affects the men inside the unit. That perspective makes it a useful choice for viewers who prefer war films concerned with psychology and environment rather than battlefield spectacle.
Because it is a dramatization of a memoir, the movie should not be treated as a complete historical account of the Gulf War. Its focus is personal experience and interpretation, not a comprehensive military history.
7. Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Best for: lavish period drama, literary adaptations, and visually elaborate historical stories.

After years of training, she becomes Sayuri and tries to build a life within a rigid social system shaped by status, patronage, desire, and later wartime upheaval.
The film offers elaborate costumes, production design, and a transformation narrative that moves from childhood into adulthood and through major social change. It is a reasonable catalog pick for viewers who prioritize visual spectacle and adaptation.
It also needs a qualification: the film has long attracted criticism and discussion over its Hollywood perspective on Japanese history and culture, including the gap between its Western production and the world it portrays. Enjoy it as a stylized adaptation, but do not treat it as an authoritative guide to geisha life or 1920s Kyoto.
8. Wayne’s World (1992)
Best for: broad comedy, music-heavy nostalgia, and a low-commitment group movie night.

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey expand their Saturday Night Live characters into a feature about Wayne and Garth, whose public-access television show attracts the attention of a producer intent on commercializing it. The result is a loose sketch-comedy movie filled with catchphrases, musical detours, and jokes about selling out.
Wayne’s World is the lightest recommendation here and a useful counterweight to The Holdovers, Jarhead, and Memoirs of a Geisha. Its structure is episodic and its humor is firmly tied to early-1990s pop culture, but the music, chemistry between the leads, and affectionate send-up of television make it an easy choice for a casual audience.

The seven main recommendations were not the entire U.S. April lineup. Contemporary April coverage also highlighted several additional catalog arrivals, including:
- Cloverfield: a found-footage monster movie built around the confusion and panic of an urban disaster.
- Mimic: a science-fiction horror film about an engineered insect species that develops beyond its intended purpose.
- Red Eye: a compact airborne thriller suited to viewers who want suspense rather than a long character drama.
- The Last Temptation of Christ: Martin Scorsese’s controversial literary and religious drama, a substantially more serious choice than the month’s comedies.
- The Exorcist: Believer: a recent supernatural-horror addition for viewers looking for a contemporary franchise entry.
- SPECTRE: a James Bond catalog option for action and spy-film fans.
Several of these titles were reported as available beginning April 1, while Música and How to Date Billy Walsh arrived later in the month. Exact start dates and inclusion can vary by territory and can change after a monthly announcement.

What “new on Prime Video” meant in April 2024
Monthly streaming lists often combine new service releases with older movies entering a platform’s catalog. That distinction matters here. Música, How to Date Billy Walsh, and The Holdovers were the clearest newer Prime Video choices, but The Notebook, Boomerang, Jarhead, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Wayne’s World were older films newly available to subscribers in the relevant lineup.
Prime Video also publishes territory-specific schedules. For example, Amazon’s April 2024 announcement for Japan included Música and How to Date Billy Walsh but otherwise listed a different mixture of Japanese and international films. The rankings above therefore apply specifically to the United States, and the service’s current title pages or in-app search should be checked before planning a movie night.
