Short answer: Hulu’s U.S. animation lineup in October 2023 was unusually broad. Adventure Time was the essential fantasy pick, Archer led the adult-comedy side, Bob’s Burgers offered the most warmth, Futurama covered science fiction, and Spy x Family, Undead Unluck and Fright Krewe added anime and seasonal horror.
This guide is deliberately dated. It describes what was available or announced for Hulu in October 2023 in the United States, not what Hulu necessarily carries today.

Important date note: This is a U.S.-focused snapshot of Hulu’s catalog and announced releases in October 2023. “Best” is an editorial recommendation based on genre, tone and audience fit—not an industry award. Hulu’s library changes by date, territory and season, so this article should not be read as a claim that every title below remains available on Hulu now.
The best animated shows on Hulu’s October 2023 lineup
1. Adventure Time — best for imaginative fantasy with emotional depth
Adventure Time is the standout choice for viewers who want animation that can be silly, adventurous and unexpectedly moving in the same episode. Finn and Jake travel through the bizarre Land of Ooo, encountering candy kingdoms, ancient monsters, talking animals, wizards and characters whose apparently simple comic premises often conceal complicated histories.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The series works for older children and adults because its fantasy is not merely decorative. Beneath the absurd humor are stories about identity, love, aging, grief, loneliness and mental health. It can play like a colorful children’s adventure one week and a melancholy meditation on memory or loss the next. That tonal range is what makes it a stronger recommendation than a conventional episodic cartoon.
The original series also serves as the foundation for a larger franchise, including Adventure Time: Distant Lands and Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. Those related series should be treated as separate availability questions, however; a Hulu franchise guide published later cannot establish what was streaming in October 2023.
2. Archer — best for fast adult spy satire
Archer begins as a sharp, deliberately dysfunctional parody of James Bond-style espionage. Sterling Archer is talented, vain, reckless and almost impossible to manage, while the agency around him is populated by equally self-interested coworkers. The result is an adult comedy driven less by realistic spycraft than by verbal timing, workplace hostility and characters who repeatedly make bad decisions with confidence.
H. Jon Benjamin’s performance gives Archer his distinctive combination of arrogance and panic, but the ensemble is equally important. The show’s jokes depend on long-running personality conflicts, recurring grudges and dialogue that moves faster than the characters’ plans. It is a good Hulu pick for viewers who want animated comedy aimed squarely at adults rather than a family sitcom.
A major strength is the show’s willingness to change its setting. Over its run, Archer moves beyond its original spy-agency formula into Hollywood, space and the alternate-history setting of Danger Island. Those shifts are not equally successful for every viewer, but they keep the series from becoming a simple repetition of its original premise.
3. Bob’s Burgers — the warmest adult animated sitcom
Bob’s Burgers is the best choice for viewers who want adult animation with jokes but little cynicism toward its central family. Bob Belcher runs a struggling hamburger restaurant with his wife, Linda, and their children, Tina, Gene and Louise. Business problems provide the weekly setup, but the show’s real subject is the family’s durable affection for one another.
The humor comes from awkward customers, school problems, eccentric neighbors, terrible business ideas and the children’s highly individual personalities. Unlike many long-running animated sitcoms, the relationships have meaningful continuity: the Belchers may irritate one another, but their support is usually genuine. That balance makes the show accessible to viewers who find more aggressively abrasive adult cartoons exhausting.
The October 2023 recommendation coverage identified nine seasons as available on Hulu at that point, while Hulu’s October schedule separately listed Bob’s Burgers Season 14 as an arrival on October 2. That distinction illustrates why streaming availability should be checked season by season rather than summarized as a claim that the entire series was present.
4. Futurama — best for science-fiction sitcoms
Futurama combines the structure of a workplace comedy with time travel, alien civilizations, robots, artificial intelligence and deliberately outlandish scientific premises. Fry, a delivery worker accidentally transported from the year 2000 to the distant future, joins Planet Express and becomes part of an ensemble that includes Leela, Bender, Professor Farnsworth and a host of strange employers and clients.

- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
The series can be broad and joke-heavy, but its science-fiction setting also gives it room for surprisingly sincere stories about friendship, family, mortality and the consequences of technology. It is a particularly relevant recommendation for this historical Hulu guide because Hulu released a revival in 2023, continuing the show in a Hulu-era format rather than merely hosting an old catalog favorite.
Choose Futurama if you want a long-running animated comedy with a larger speculative canvas than a typical family or workplace sitcom. It is less suitable if you are looking for a short, tightly serialized story with a fixed premise.
5. Hit-Monkey — best for violent comic-book action
Hit-Monkey is one of the clearest mature-viewer picks in the lineup. Its premise follows a Japanese snow monkey who is mentored by the ghost of an American assassin. Together, they become caught in a revenge-driven journey through Tokyo’s criminal underworld.

The appeal is the collision between an inherently strange protagonist and a grim, violent action story. The monkey’s appearance creates an almost absurd contrast with the body count, criminal conspiracies and hard-edged revenge narrative. It is comic-book-inspired animation with dark humor rather than a family adventure, so it belongs on an adults-only or mature-viewer shortlist.
6. Spy x Family — best anime for action, comedy and found family
Spy x Family offers a more accessible entry point for viewers who want anime but do not want to choose between action and comedy. A spy, an assassin and a telepathic child form a fake family for different reasons, with each member hiding a major secret from the others. The child, however, knows everyone’s secret, which creates much of the show’s comic tension.
The espionage plot gives the series missions and danger, while the domestic setup supplies the emotional center. School scenes, family misunderstandings and the characters’ attempts to perform normal domestic life are as important as the spy action. Hulu’s October 2023 schedule listed Season 2 as arriving on October 7, making it one of the notable anime additions to that month’s lineup.
7. Fright Krewe — best for seasonal spooky animation
Fright Krewe was the notable new animated horror-adventure entry in Huluween 2023. It premiered on Hulu on October 2 as part of Hulu’s Halloween programming push and was also scheduled to debut on Peacock. It should therefore not be described as a Hulu exclusive.

The show is a useful recommendation for older children, teenagers or families who want supernatural danger without moving directly to live-action horror. Because the appropriate audience depends on the applicable rating and a child’s sensitivity to frightening material, check the rating and parental controls before watching with younger viewers.
More worthwhile October 2023 Hulu animation picks
Family Guy — best for long-running, joke-dense adult comedy
Family Guy is a broad-reach choice for viewers who want an established adult animated sitcom built around cutaway jokes, pop-culture references and an intentionally chaotic family dynamic. It is more abrasive and gag-driven than Bob’s Burgers, with less emphasis on emotional realism and more on the speed and frequency of its comic premises.

Hulu’s October 2023 schedule listed Family Guy Season 22 arriving on October 2 after its linear-TV premiere. It is best approached as a large catalog of comic episodes rather than a series that needs to be watched in strict order.
The Simpsons — best for an enormous comedy catalog
The Simpsons remains the obvious pick for viewers who want a long-running animated sitcom with satire, family stories and a huge range of recurring characters. Its tone varies across decades: some episodes are built around topical jokes, others around emotional family plots, and still others around Springfield’s broader social world.

The Awesomes — best deep-cut superhero parody
The Awesomes follows a replacement superhero team led by the son of the original Mr. Awesome. The premise lets the show parody superhero succession, team dynamics and the pressure to live up to a famous predecessor.
Its large comedy voice cast and middle-ground tone make it a useful recommendation for viewers who want superhero satire that is more mature than a straightforward children’s cartoon but less extreme than adult stop-motion comedy. It is also one of the deeper cuts in the October selection, making it a good choice for anyone who has already exhausted the better-known Hulu sitcoms.
Bless the Harts — best Southern family sitcom with a female-centered perspective
Bless the Harts centers on a working-class Southern family and brings a distinctly female-centered perspective to the animated sitcom format. The series was created by Emily Spivey and features Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Jillian Bell among its leading voices.

Viewers who like character-based sitcoms but want something less familiar than The Simpsons or Family Guy should put it on the shortlist.
Duncanville — best for irreverent modern family comedy
Duncanville follows an imaginative teenager whose ordinary life is constantly interrupted—or psychologically transformed—by elaborate fantasies. The contrast between Duncan’s everyday family and the dramatic worlds in his head supplies the show’s central comic engine.
It is a fit for viewers who want a contemporary animated family sitcom with an irreverent edge. Choose it over Bob’s Burgers if you prefer adolescent frustration, exaggerated fantasy sequences and a more conventional modern sitcom setup.

Crossing Swords — best for raunchy medieval fantasy
Crossing Swords is a black-comedy medieval adventure about a squire trying to navigate a world of royalty, violence, corruption and absurdity. Its deliberately toy-like visual style makes the show’s vulgarity and brutality feel even more incongruous.

It is aimed at adults who enjoy crude humor, irreverent historical settings and animated comedy that uses cuteness as part of the joke. It is a stronger match for fans of raunchy genre parody than for viewers seeking the all-ages wonder of Adventure Time.
Undead Unluck — best new anime addition of the month
Undead Unluck was one of Hulu’s notable new anime additions in October 2023. Its central pairing is built around Andy, who cannot die, and Fuuko, whose ability brings misfortune. Their powers create both the action premise and the series’ unusual comic tension.
The show is a good option for viewers who want supernatural battle anime with a high-concept rule system and an unconventional partnership at its center. Hulu’s October calendar listed it as arriving on October 6. Because it was a new weekly-style addition rather than an old complete sitcom catalog, viewers should distinguish its Hulu premiere timing from the availability of a full season.
Sword Art Online: Alicization Season 2 — best for returning fantasy-action anime
For viewers already invested in the franchise, Sword Art Online: Alicization Season 2 was listed among Hulu’s October 2023 animation arrivals on October 1. It belongs on a watchlist for fans of virtual-world fantasy, action and continuing serialized anime stories.

One Piece Season 10 — best for a long-form anime commitment
One Piece is the choice for viewers who want an expansive adventure rather than a short series they can finish in a weekend. Hulu’s October 2023 calendar listed One Piece Season 10 as arriving on October 15.
As with any long-running anime, season labels and catalog divisions can vary by service and territory. The October date identifies the Hulu schedule’s labeling, not a universal numbering system. New viewers should also expect a substantial time commitment and a story designed to build across many arcs.

Availability: how to read this October 2023 list
Streaming availability is not permanent. The recommendations above describe titles and season arrivals associated with Hulu’s U.S. catalog in October 2023, not a guaranteed current lineup. A title may later lose some seasons, move to another service, become available only through a different plan or disappear entirely. Hulu’s own guides and landing pages can also change their destinations and contents over time.
That matters especially for long-running shows. Saying that Hulu carried Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy or The Simpsons does not necessarily mean every episode or season was available at the same time. Likewise, an announced premiere date identifies when Hulu planned to add a title in the United States; it does not establish availability in other countries.
For a current viewing decision, search Hulu directly and confirm the specific season, territory and plan. For the historical question—what animated programming made Hulu especially worthwhile in October 2023—the answer is the breadth: adult sitcoms, surreal fantasy, science fiction, superhero parody, anime, family comedy and darker action animation all appeared in the same catalog conversation.
