On desktop, use the in-site Miniplayer command. On a phone, distinguish that from Picture-in-Picture (PiP), which requires separate system and YouTube settings.
First, identify which “mini player” is failing
YouTube has two similar features:
- Miniplayer: the small player that stays visible while you browse to another page inside YouTube.
- Picture-in-Picture (PiP): the floating video window that remains visible while you use other apps on a phone or tablet.
Start by testing a normal, long-form, non-music video. Shorts and videos marked Made for Kids are excluded from YouTube’s Miniplayer, and mobile PiP has additional content, account, country, and platform restrictions. If the feature works for one video but not another, eligibility—not a broken device—may be the explanation.
Quick fixes
- Leave full-screen and theater mode, then return to the regular YouTube watch page.
- Test a standard long-form video rather than a Short, music video, livestream, or Made for Kids video.
- On desktop, right-click the video and choose Miniplayer.
- On Android or iPhone, try the in-app Miniplayer first by tapping Back or swiping the video down.
- For a floating player outside YouTube, enable PiP both in the device settings and in the YouTube app.
- Force-close and reopen YouTube after changing a setting.
- Try YouTube in an incognito or private browser window to identify extension conflicts.
- Update YouTube, your browser, and your device software before clearing site data or reinstalling the app.
When YouTube’s in-site Miniplayer is not working on a computer
1. Use the normal Miniplayer control
While a regular video is playing on YouTube.com, right-click the video and select Miniplayer. The video should shrink into a small player while you browse elsewhere on YouTube. Depending on the interface, you can move or resize it, return it to the full watch page, or close it.
If Miniplayer is missing from the right-click menu:

- Exit full-screen mode.
- Exit theater mode if it is enabled.
- Return to the ordinary watch-page layout.
- Reload the page and test again with a regular long-form video.
Do not confuse this with PiP. The desktop Miniplayer is designed for browsing within YouTube; it is not necessarily the floating window you see over other desktop applications.
2. Test YouTube without extensions
Open YouTube in an incognito or private window and test while browser extensions are disabled or unavailable. This is an isolation test, not proof that a particular extension is defective.
If Miniplayer works there, return to your normal browser and disable extensions one at a time. Check ad blockers, privacy and script-blocking tools, user-agent modifiers, video downloaders, and extensions that change YouTube’s layout first. Reload YouTube after each change. Once the feature stops working again, you have identified the likely conflict.
3. Update the browser and clear YouTube site data
YouTube recommends using a current compatible browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Install any pending browser update, then reload YouTube.
If the page still behaves abnormally, clear the browser’s cached data. In Chrome, open the browser menu, choose Delete browsing data, select a time range, and remove the relevant cached data. Clearing cookies can sign you out and remove saved site preferences, so use it as a later step and make sure you know your account credentials before proceeding.
4. Check the account, connection, and browser session
Sign in if you normally use YouTube while signed in, then refresh the page. Also try:
- Restarting the browser.
- Testing another supported browser.
- Temporarily disconnecting from a VPN or managed network, if applicable.
- Restarting your router or switching networks.
- Restarting the computer.
These steps address broader playback and page-loading problems; they are not guaranteed Miniplayer-specific fixes. If ordinary videos also buffer, fail to load, or show a blank player, investigate the general connection or browser problem first.
Android: fix the floating YouTube PiP window
On Android, tapping Back or swiping the video down tests YouTube’s in-app Miniplayer. Pressing Home or leaving the app tests Picture-in-Picture. These are separate behaviors.

1. Enable Android’s PiP permission
Open:
Settings > Apps > YouTube > Picture-in-picture > Allow picture-in-picture
Android menu names can differ slightly by manufacturer and software version. Search Settings for “picture-in-picture” if the path is different.
2. Enable PiP inside YouTube
In the YouTube app, open your profile picture, choose Settings > Playback, and turn on Picture-in-picture.
After enabling both switches, force-close YouTube, reopen it, and test a normal non-Short video. Play the video actively, then leave YouTube. If audio continues but no floating video appears, the problem is more likely related to PiP permission, app state, content eligibility, or an app regression than to basic video playback.
3. Check content and account limits
PiP is not guaranteed for every video or account. YouTube’s documented restrictions include limits on music content, particularly for users without YouTube Premium, with availability also varying by country and platform. A Premium restriction is different from a software bug: YouTube Premium may be relevant when the specific problem is Premium-only background playback or music-content PiP, but subscribing should not be presented as a general repair for a broken PiP control.
For a clean test, use an ordinary long-form video that is not a Short, music video, livestream, or Made for Kids video.
4. Restart, update, or reinstall
If both PiP settings are enabled:
- Force-close YouTube and open it again.
- Restart the Android device.
- Update YouTube from the app store.
- Install available Android system or firmware updates.
- Only then consider uninstalling and reinstalling YouTube, if your device permits it.
Reinstalling may reset app state and settings, but it does not override content or subscription restrictions.
iPhone and iPad: fix YouTube PiP
1. Confirm the iOS requirement and system setting
YouTube’s cited PiP guidance specifies iOS 15.0 or later. In iOS, open:

Settings > General > Picture in Picture > Start PiP Automatically
Turn on Start PiP Automatically.
2. Enable PiP in YouTube
Open YouTube, tap your profile picture, choose Settings > Playback, and enable Picture-in-picture. Test with an eligible, ordinary long-form video. Shorts and videos marked Made for Kids do not support the in-app Miniplayer, while music and other content can have additional PiP restrictions.
3. Force-close YouTube after changing the setting
Swipe YouTube away from the app switcher, reopen it, start a video, and leave the app. This matters after an app-side fix as well as after changing PiP settings.
YouTube’s official TeamYouTube issue reporting described a mainly iOS PiP problem as fixed on July 20, 2026 and instructed users to force-close and reopen the app to receive the fix. That report does not mean every current PiP failure is resolved; it does show why reopening the app is worth doing when the setting is already enabled.
4. Update the app and iOS
If PiP still does not trigger, update YouTube and iOS, then restart the iPhone or iPad. If the issue began immediately after an update, avoid repeatedly changing unrelated settings; first check whether YouTube has posted a known issue or follow-up fix.
Audio plays, but the floating video is missing
This symptom narrows the diagnosis. YouTube playback is functioning, but the PiP window is not being created or displayed. Check these in order:
- Confirm that you are testing PiP—not merely the in-app Miniplayer.
- Verify the system PiP permission and YouTube’s own PiP switch.
- Test an eligible non-music, long-form video.
- Force-close and reopen YouTube.
- Update the app and operating system.
- Restart the device.
If audio continues and the app becomes unresponsive when PiP should open, document the behavior and report it rather than assuming that a new phone or accessory is required. YouTube has documented temporary mobile PiP regressions, including an Android Premium/PiP issue reported as fixed in June 2026.

A YouTube-side defect becomes more plausible when:
- The same failure occurs on multiple devices or accounts.
- PiP fails in the official app after both permissions are enabled.
- The problem began immediately after a YouTube or operating-system update.
- Many users are reporting the same behavior.
Temporary YouTube bugs do happen. However, the available research did not establish an official global Miniplayer outage on August 12, 2026. Treat an outage as a possibility, not a confirmed explanation, until YouTube posts a notice or the issue is widely corroborated through its official support channels.

Before waiting for a fix, complete the eligibility test and clean-app or incognito test. Those steps distinguish a platform regression from a video restriction, permission problem, or extension conflict.
Report the problem to YouTube
In the Android YouTube app, open your profile picture, choose Settings > Send feedback, describe the failure, and attach a screenshot or diagnostic information when appropriate. Comparable feedback options are available through YouTube’s Help Center and supported-device app interfaces.
Include details that let YouTube reproduce the problem:
- Device model and operating-system version.
- YouTube app version, or browser name and version.
- Whether the failure affects the in-app Miniplayer, mobile PiP, or both.
- The test video type: ordinary video, Short, music video, livestream, or Made for Kids.
- Whether you were signed in and whether the account has YouTube Premium.
- Whether the issue survives an incognito or clean-browser test.
- A privacy-safe screenshot or screen recording.
Do not include private messages, payment details, or unrelated personal information in a recording or report.

- Do not assume every video supports Miniplayer or PiP.
- Do not treat YouTube Premium as a universal fix for a software failure.
- Do not blame a particular ad blocker, VPN, browser, or battery setting until disabling it actually changes the result.
- Do not buy a phone, streaming accessory, adapter, or repair tool to fix this software feature.
- Do not diagnose a third-party or modified YouTube client until the problem is reproduced in the official app or YouTube.com.
YouTube says some third-party apps do not support YouTube content. If you use one, reproduce the issue in the official YouTube app or on the mobile website before continuing with device troubleshooting.

Why is YouTube Miniplayer missing?
The Miniplayer may be unavailable because the video is a Short or marked Made for Kids. Why does YouTube keep playing audio but not show the floating video?
