Apple TV is Apple’s paid streaming service for original shows, movies, and selected live sports. You do not need Apple hardware to watch it: the Apple TV app works on many smart TVs, streaming devices, phones, tablets, computers, game consoles, and online. The optional Apple TV 4K is a separate streaming box that adds a dedicated interface, App Store access, 4K HDR support, and Apple ecosystem features.
In the United States, Apple’s current listing shows Apple TV at $12.99 per month after the listed seven-day free trial. The service focuses on Apple Originals rather than a broad third-party catalog, and the current U.S. sports offering includes selected Formula 1, MLS, and Friday Night Baseball coverage. Prices, device support, sports rights, and promotions vary by location and can change.
What is Apple TV?
Apple TV is Apple’s paid streaming service for original shows, movies, and selected live sports. You do not need to own an Apple device or an Apple TV 4K box to use it. Most viewers can subscribe and watch through the Apple TV app on an existing smart TV, streaming stick, phone, tablet, computer, game console, or web browser.
The name is confusing because Apple uses Apple TV for the service, the Apple TV app for the software, and Apple TV 4K for its optional streaming hardware. The service was also widely known as Apple TV+; older articles, account pages, and search results may still use that name.

Apple’s current U.S. service page describes Apple TV as an ad-free, all-original service with hundreds of exclusive shows and movies, plus selected live sports. The current U.S. standalone price is $12.99 per month after the listed seven-day trial, although prices, trials, bundles, sports rights, and device availability can vary by country and change over time.
Apple TV, the Apple TV app, and Apple TV 4K: the difference
| Name | What it means | Is it required? |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV | Apple’s subscription service for its original catalog and specified live sports. | Only if you want to watch the subscription content. |
| Apple TV app | The application used to browse and play Apple content. It can also include channels, rentals, purchases, and integrations with other services. | You need a supported way to access the service, but not necessarily Apple hardware. |
| Apple TV Channels | Separate subscriptions sold or managed through the Apple TV app, such as selected Paramount+ or Starz offerings. | No. Channel subscriptions are optional and generally cost extra. |
| Apple TV 4K | Apple’s physical streaming box, with its own operating system, remote, App Store access, gaming features, and smart-home capabilities. | No. It is an enhanced viewing option, not a prerequisite for Apple TV. |
The app may therefore show content that is not included in an Apple TV subscription. A movie available to rent or buy is not automatically part of the subscription, and a third-party channel is a separate paid service unless the relevant offer explicitly says otherwise. Apple’s App Store description of the Apple TV app explains these different content types and notes that channel availability depends on the device and region.
What does an Apple TV subscription include?
Apple Originals
The core of Apple TV is Apple’s own programming rather than a broad catalog assembled from many outside studios. Apple says the service includes hundreds of exclusive shows and movies across genres such as drama, science fiction, comedy, and other original programming. Apple Originals are available on demand and are presented as commercial-free.
Release patterns vary. Some series release one episode at a time on a recurring schedule, some release multiple episodes together, and some programs arrive with an entire season available at once. New movies and series are added regularly, so the current catalog is best checked in the Apple TV app or on Apple’s service page rather than inferred from an old list of titles.

Live sports in the United States
Apple’s current U.S. page lists selected live sports as part of the Apple TV subscription without an additional charge. It currently identifies:
- Formula 1 races
- Major League Soccer matches
- Friday Night Baseball
These are not permanent worldwide benefits. Sports rights are seasonal and geographic, and live events can be subject to regional availability and blackout rules. Apple’s 2026 Apple TV newsroom listings identify Apple TV as the U.S. home of Formula 1 beginning with the 2026 season and document Friday Night Baseball and the 2026 MLS season. Those announcements should not be treated as a guarantee that the same sports lineup, schedule, or rights will remain unchanged indefinitely.
If sports are the reason you are considering Apple TV, check the current U.S. service page and the event schedule before subscribing. A match or race being associated with Apple TV does not necessarily mean it is available in every country or in every local market.
What is not automatically included
- Apple TV Channels: These are separate subscriptions accessed through the app. Examples listed in Apple’s app documentation include Paramount+ and Starz, but availability varies.
- Rentals and purchases: A film or program that appears in the app may require a separate rental or purchase.
- Every third-party streaming service: The app can provide integrations and a central interface, but it does not make other streaming subscriptions free.

| Standalone Apple TV | $12.99 per month after the listed seven-day free trial. | Price and trial terms can change, and the trial is not a universal promise for every new or returning customer. |
| New Apple device promotion | Eligible customers may receive three months of Apple TV when they redeem the offer within 90 days of purchasing a qualifying new Apple device. | Eligibility and redemption rules apply. Buying any device does not automatically guarantee the offer. |
| Apple One | Apple TV is available as part of Apple One. | Apple One is a separate bundle with its own plans, pricing, and regional availability. |
| Apple Music Student Plan | Apple says students receive Apple TV access through the Apple Music Student Plan. | Student eligibility and plan availability depend on country and current Apple terms. |
| Apple and Peacock bundle | Apple’s U.S. page advertises a $14.99-per-month bundle combining Apple Originals with Peacock content and live sports. | This is a distinct, date- and market-dependent offer, not the standard standalone Apple TV price. |
Apple also supports Family Sharing for Apple TV. According to Apple, one subscription can be shared with up to six people total: the purchaser plus up to five family members. The people you share with need to fit within Apple’s Family Sharing rules, and availability can vary by region.
Do not assume that canceling and resubscribing will produce another free trial. The seven-day trial shown on Apple’s page applies to the listed new-subscriber path; device promotions, student access, Apple One, and bundle offers have separate eligibility conditions.

Where can you watch Apple TV?
Apple TV is available through the Apple TV app on a wide range of devices and online. Apple lists access through:
- iPhone and iPad
- Mac and PC
- Apple Vision Pro
- Apple TV 4K
- Selected Samsung and LG smart TVs
- Amazon Fire TV devices
- Roku devices
- Android TV devices and selected Android devices
- Selected Sony televisions
- Selected game consoles
- AirPlay-compatible viewing setups
- A web browser through Apple’s online service
Support is model-specific. A television brand appearing on Apple’s compatibility list does not mean that every model or model year supports the app. Apple’s device and smart-TV setup guidance is the safer reference because Apple notes that features and availability vary by country and region. The Apple TV app listing also identifies supported device categories, but app support can change as manufacturers update their platforms.

On a compatible smart TV or streaming device:
- Open the device’s app store.
- Search for the Apple TV app.
- Download and open the app.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the subscription, or follow the on-screen subscription instructions.
In the United States, Apple says users can subscribe to Apple TV on Amazon Fire TV and through Prime Video. Some purchases and rentals may still require another supported device, so the subscription and the app’s full transactional functionality are not necessarily identical on every platform.
What you need to watch
- An Apple Account: You need an account to subscribe and sign in.
- An internet connection: Apple TV is an internet streaming service.
- A compatible device: This can be an existing phone, tablet, computer, smart TV, streaming device, console, or Apple TV 4K.
- A compatible screen: For ordinary viewing, use a supported display. For 4K HDR playback through Apple TV 4K, Apple says a compatible 4K HDR television is required.
- An HDMI cable for Apple TV 4K: Apple says the cable is sold separately if you use the physical box.
You do not need an Apple TV 4K simply because you have an Apple TV subscription. If the Apple TV app already works on your television, Roku, Fire TV, game console, Android device, iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC, you can watch Apple Originals without purchasing another box.
Should you buy Apple TV 4K?
Buy the hardware for the dedicated-device experience and its platform features, not because Apple requires it for the streaming service. It is most relevant if you want a consistent interface across televisions, close integration with other Apple devices, 4K HDR and compatible immersive-audio support, gaming and App Store access, or Apple home-hub functionality.
If your existing television or streaming stick runs the Apple TV app properly, the box is optional. In that situation, the purchase may still be attractive as a dedicated upgrade, but it is not a prerequisite or a way to unlock a larger Apple TV subscription catalog.
| Your situation | Most practical choice |
|---|---|
| You only want Apple Originals and already have a supported TV, streaming stick, console, phone, tablet, or computer. | Subscribe and use the existing device first. Do not buy Apple TV 4K merely to access the service. |
| You want a dedicated streaming interface, Apple ecosystem integration, App Store apps, or gaming on the television. | Consider Apple TV 4K. |
| You want wired networking or Thread support for compatible smart-home accessories. | The 128GB Wi-Fi-plus-Ethernet Apple TV 4K is the relevant configuration. |
| You want 4K HDR or Dolby Atmos. | Apple TV 4K can support those formats, but the television, content, receiver or soundbar, and connection must also be compatible. |
| You are trying to fix an unsupported or very old smart TV. | A supported streaming device may be simpler than replacing the television, but verify compatibility before buying. |
Disclosure: This guide may contain retailer links. If you purchase through one, the site may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. The recommendation does not change the central point: Apple TV 4K is optional for the Apple TV service.
Apple TV 4K specifications
Apple’s current technical documentation identifies the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) as the 2022 generation. Apple introduced it in October 2022 with a U.S. launch price starting at $129, but that launch price should not be mistaken for the current retail price. Check the Apple announcement for the launch details and Apple’s current store listing for live pricing and availability.
| Feature | Apple’s documented specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | A15 Bionic chip |
| Storage and networking | 64GB Wi-Fi model, or 128GB Wi-Fi-plus-Ethernet model |
| Wired networking | The 128GB model adds Gigabit Ethernet. |
| Smart-home networking | The Ethernet model adds Thread networking. |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 |
| Video output | Up to 2160p at 60 frames per second |
| HDR formats | Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG, subject to compatible content and equipment |
| Audio formats | Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1, subject to compatible content, television, receiver, and app |
| Ports and power | HDMI 2.1 and a built-in power supply |
| Remote | Third-generation Siri Remote with Bluetooth 5.0, an IR transmitter, and USB-C charging |
Apple’s Apple TV 4K technical specifications are the source for these hardware details. The two storage configurations share the main video and wireless capabilities; the 128GB version is the one to choose when Gigabit Ethernet or Thread is important.
Video, audio, and connection requirements
Apple TV 4K can output up to 2160p at 60 fps and supports the HDR and audio formats listed above. Those specifications do not mean that every show, app, or television will use every format. The content must be offered in the format, the display must support it, and the television or receiver must be able to pass or decode the signal.

For 4K HDR streaming, Apple specifically requires a compatible 4K HDR television. The box connects over HDMI, and Apple says the HDMI cable is sold separately. If you want Dolby Atmos, the rest of the audio chain also needs compatible equipment, such as a supported receiver or soundbar; the Apple TV box alone cannot create Atmos from incompatible hardware.
For a wired installation, the 128GB model provides Gigabit Ethernet. The Ethernet model is also the relevant choice for Thread-related smart-home functionality. These are specification-based distinctions; no independent performance, latency, picture-quality, or reliability testing is claimed here.
The Siri Remote
The included third-generation remote uses Bluetooth 5.0, includes an IR transmitter, and charges through USB-C. Apple says it can control compatible televisions or receivers through infrared or HDMI-CEC. If the remote is lost or damaged, an Apple TV Siri Remote is the relevant replacement accessory; confirm compatibility and the connector before purchasing a spare.
Apple TV 4K setup checklist
If you decide to use the box, gather these items before starting:
- Apple TV 4K: Choose the 64GB Wi-Fi model or the 128GB Wi-Fi-plus-Ethernet model according to your networking and smart-home needs.
- A compatible 4K HDR TV: This is necessary if you want 4K HDR output.
- An HDMI cable for Apple TV 4K: Apple lists the cable as sold separately.
- Power: The Apple TV 4K has a built-in power supply.
- Network access: Use Wi-Fi, or connect Ethernet if you selected the Ethernet model.
- An Apple Account: You will use it to sign in, subscribe, and access purchases or other Apple TV app content.
Connect the box to the display over HDMI, connect power, select the correct television input, complete the network connection, and sign in. The exact on-screen wording can change with tvOS updates, so follow the setup prompts shown on the device.

The Apple TV app is not on my television
First check the television or streaming device’s app store and search for Apple TV. If it does not appear, the model, operating system, or region may not be supported. Update the device if an update is available, then consult Apple’s current compatibility and setup guidance. Do not assume that an unsupported older model will gain the app simply because a newer television from the same brand has it.
I can open the app, but the show asks me to subscribe
The app is free to install, but the Apple TV service is paid. Also check whether you are looking at an Apple TV Channel, rental, or purchase rather than an Apple Original included with the subscription. Signing in with a different Apple Account can also make an existing subscription appear to be missing.
Why can’t I watch a particular sports event?
Live sports depend on country, season, rights agreements, local coverage, and blackout rules. Check the event listing and current service terms rather than relying on a general statement that Apple TV carries a sport. The U.S. lineup is especially time-sensitive because Formula 1, MLS, and Friday Night Baseball coverage is tied to specific seasons and rights announcements.
Recommended Free Tools
Why am I not seeing 4K HDR or Dolby Atmos?
Check the entire chain: the program must support the format; the television must support 4K HDR; the receiver or soundbar must support the relevant audio format; and the HDMI connection must be suitable. Apple TV 4K’s published capabilities are maximum supported formats, not a guarantee that every title or app will deliver them.
Can I rent or buy a movie on every device?
Not necessarily. Apple says that in the United States, some purchases and rentals require another supported device even though Apple TV subscriptions are available on Amazon Fire TV and through Prime Video. If a transaction option is missing, use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, Apple TV 4K, or another device that Apple currently supports for that function.

Who should subscribe to Apple TV?
Apple TV makes the most sense for viewers who want Apple’s exclusive shows and movies, prefer an on-demand catalog centered on originals rather than a huge general library, or want the currently advertised U.S. sports coverage. Family Sharing can make the subscription more useful for a household of up to six people total.
It is less suitable as a replacement for every other streaming service. Apple TV Channels, rentals, purchases, and third-party services in the app may require additional payments. If your main expectation is one subscription containing a broad selection from many studios, Apple TV’s all-original positioning is an important limitation to understand before signing up.
Final recommendation
Start with the service, not the box. If you already have a compatible smart TV, streaming device, computer, or mobile device, install the Apple TV app and verify that it meets your needs before buying hardware. Choose Apple TV 4K when you specifically want a dedicated Apple-centered interface, App Store and gaming access, 4K HDR and compatible audio support, or a home-hub and networking feature that your current device does not provide.
