It became widely known in the United States in January 2025, when TikTok users facing uncertainty about the app’s future migrated to RedNote as a fallback, protest, or curiosity-driven alternative.
RedNote is not simply the Chinese version of TikTok. Its strongest use cases are lifestyle discovery, peer recommendations, and product-related content, and its Chinese-language community, moderation rules, and privacy disclosures create a different experience.
RedNote is the English-facing name commonly used for Xiaohongshu (小红书), a Chinese social platform built around lifestyle discovery, recommendations, shopping, and community discussion. It supports photo-and-text posts, short videos, live streams, comments, follows, messaging, search, and commerce. The closest description is not simply “Chinese TikTok,” but a blend of Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok-style video, and a product-recommendation platform. RedNote’s U.S. App Store listing describes a community for sharing daily life, fashion, music, recipes, home decor, travel, and pets.
English-speaking users heard about RedNote during a major January 2025 migration, when uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future availability in the United States led some users to look for an alternative. Those newcomers were widely nicknamed “TikTok refugees.” RedNote can still be interesting to TikTok users, but it is not a guaranteed replacement: its language mix, culture, moderation rules, privacy disclosures, search experience, and commercial ecosystem are different.

What does RedNote mean?
Xiaohongshu is the Chinese romanization of 小红书, which literally translates as Little Red Book. RedNote and rednote are English-facing names used for the same service, while XHS is a common abbreviation.
The app is operated by Xingin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. It is a different product from both TikTok and Douyin. TikTok is the international short-video service, while Douyin is its separate China-focused counterpart. RedNote is its own platform, with a stronger emphasis on lifestyle posts, recommendations, search, and shopping than either name “TikTok” might suggest. The Associated Press explains the distinction between these platforms and the 2025 migration.
Why were TikTok users called “refugees”?
The phrase describes a particular migration event, not an official RedNote user group. In January 2025, a U.S. law and a January 19 deadline created intense uncertainty about whether TikTok would remain available to American users. Some people downloaded RedNote as a fallback, some as a protest, and others simply out of curiosity.
RedNote briefly became the top free-download app in the U.S. App Store during that period, according to AP. Reuters reported an early influx of more than 700,000 new users. The numbers describe downloads or an early measurement of incoming users—not a verified count of people who became long-term, active RedNote users.
The migration was unusual because it placed English-speaking Americans directly into a platform whose established community was overwhelmingly Chinese. New users introduced themselves, shared pet photos, and asked questions about rent, food, school, health care, work, and everyday cultural differences. The result was part social-media experiment, part cross-cultural conversation, and part response to a fast-moving U.S. platform dispute.
What do people do on RedNote?
RedNote’s center of gravity is practical lifestyle discovery. The platform is commonly associated with beauty, fashion, food, travel, home decor, fitness, study, books, pets, and consumer recommendations. A post is often called a note, and notes can combine photographs, written explanations, short video, product references, and personal experience.

A newcomer may use RedNote to:
- Browse recommendations: View a personalized stream of posts selected around interests and activity.
- Search for practical advice: Look for travel ideas, restaurant suggestions, recipes, makeup routines, study methods, home projects, or product experiences.
- Read photo-led guides: Many posts are closer to visual reviews or mini how-to articles than to a conventional short video.
- Watch short videos: The platform supports video, but it is not limited to an endless full-screen video feed.
- Follow and communicate: Users can follow creators, like and comment on posts, and use messaging features.
- Explore live content and shopping: RedNote includes live-streaming and shopping functions, although the products, checkout process, and commercial features available to a user may depend on region and account.
This combination makes RedNote useful for people who treat social media as a discovery and research tool. It can feel closer to searching a visual recommendation community than simply watching entertainment clips one after another.
RedNote versus TikTok
| Area | RedNote | TikTok |
|---|---|---|
| Primary identity | Lifestyle discovery, recommendations, community posts, and shopping | Short-form video discovery and entertainment, with a large creator and sound ecosystem |
| Typical formats | Photos, text, photo galleries, short videos, reviews, guides, comments, and live streams | Primarily vertical short video, with tools built around video creation and sounds |
| Search behavior | Practical searches and peer recommendations are central to the experience | Search exists, but many users primarily encounter content through a rapidly moving video feed |
| Language and culture | Chinese-language content and Chinese social norms remain central, even when English-speaking users participate | Large English-language and international creator communities are already established |
| Commercial content | Product recommendations, shopping, and live commerce are part of the platform | Shopping and creator-commercial features also exist, but the tools and ecosystem are not identical |
| Moderation environment | Governed within China’s tightly controlled internet environment, with rules and enforcement expectations that may differ from TikTok’s | Uses its own policies, systems, and regional legal obligations |
The difference is more than a change of app icon. Someone who wants searchable restaurant recommendations, outfit ideas, travel planning, or product experiences may find RedNote especially appealing. Someone who wants TikTok’s familiar English-language entertainment network, specific music and sound culture, editing workflow, or established creator economy may find the transition incomplete.
Is RedNote available in the United States?
The official U.S. iOS listing uses the name rednote, identifies Xingin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. as the developer, and lists the app in Social Networking. The listing snapshot used for this guide showed support for iPhone and iPad, iOS 13.0 or later, a 13+ age rating, and English, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese as listed app languages. It also showed the app as free with in-app purchases.
App versions change frequently. The listing snapshot showed version 9.42 as the latest displayed version at the time the information was captured; that number should be checked directly before publication or installation. The current listing is the reliable place to confirm device compatibility and version details.
An official Google Play listing for RedNote identifies the developer with the Chinese name 行吟信息科技(上海)有限公司 and provides links to support, the developer’s website, and a privacy policy. Use the Apple App Store or Google Play rather than an unofficial APK, mirror, or downloader.
How to get started with RedNote
- Install the official app. Check the app name and developer against the official Apple or Google listing before downloading.
- Create an account using the option offered in your region. During the January 2025 influx, Reuters corrected an earlier report to clarify that a foreign phone number could be used and that a Chinese number was not required in that account-creation flow. That was a historical condition, not a permanent promise. Signup requirements can change.
- Choose a few broad interests. Travel, recipes, pets, books, beauty, fitness, and home decor are useful starting points. The exact onboarding screens may vary by app version and region.
- Search rather than relying only on the initial feed. Try specific topics and follow accounts whose posts are genuinely useful. Likes, follows, searches, and saves can help make the recommendations more relevant.
- Use translation as an aid. RedNote may offer translation features, and the app lists English among its supported languages. That does not mean every post, comment, help screen, joke, slang term, or commercial interaction will appear in fluent English. Reuters reported that the platform was working on English-language moderation and Chinese-English translation during the 2025 influx.
- Delay posting until you understand the audience. Spend time observing how people title posts, disclose recommendations, discuss products, and respond to visitors from other countries.
- Review permissions before granting them. Location, contacts, photos, audio, messaging, and contact-discovery features are not all necessary for every use of the app.
How much English content is on RedNote?
English-speaking users can participate, but RedNote should not be approached as an English-only network. The official listing includes English among the app’s listed languages, while Reuters’ reporting during the 2025 influx described ongoing work on translation and moderation for English-language users. Those facts are compatible: an app interface can support English even when a large share of its user posts and community conversations remain in Chinese.

Machine translation can help with the basic meaning of a caption or comment, but it may miss sarcasm, local references, slang, tone, or culturally specific assumptions. Be especially cautious before treating a translated health, legal, financial, travel, or product-safety claim as authoritative. Translation is useful for discovery; it is not a substitute for checking important information from a trustworthy primary source.
Moderation, censorship, and speech rules
RedNote operates within China’s tightly controlled internet environment. Reporting during the 2025 migration described limits around topics considered sensitive in China and the challenge of moderating a sudden increase in English-language posts. Users should not assume that RedNote has the same speech rules, content-removal process, transparency, or appeal expectations as TikTok, Instagram, or a U.S.-based service. Reuters’ reporting on the influx provides context for the language and moderation differences users encountered.
This does not mean that every post will be removed or that every user will experience enforcement in the same way. It does mean that platform governance is a material part of the decision to use RedNote. Avoid treating the service as a neutral mirror of TikTok, particularly when discussing politically sensitive subjects or relying on the platform for information that needs to remain available.
RedNote privacy: what should users know?
Apple’s App Privacy section says that Xingin reports the app may use identifiers to track users across other companies’ apps and websites. It also lists data that may be linked to a user, including purchases, location, contact information, contacts, user content, search history, and identifiers. Apple notes that these disclosures are provided by the developer and have not been verified by Apple. Review the listing’s App Privacy section for the latest disclosure rather than assuming the categories are permanent.

Depending on the features used, the same listing says the app may request or use precise or coarse location, contact information, contacts, photos or videos, audio data, customer-support content, other user content, and device identifiers. It also states that location may be used when the app is not open. A permission prompt is not proof that all data is always collected in every situation, but it is a reason to examine the feature and operating-system settings carefully.
A sensible privacy checklist
- Deny contacts access unless you specifically want contact discovery or contact syncing.
- Give location access only when it is needed, and review whether background location is enabled at the operating-system level.
- Choose selected photos instead of an entire photo library when your device offers that option.
- Do not upload passports, boarding passes, medical documents, financial records, private work files, or images containing addresses and account numbers.
- Avoid publishing an exact home address, regular commute, children’s school, travel dates, or other details that reveal your location or routine.
- Use a unique password if the available login method involves a password, and protect the email or phone account used for recovery.
- Assume that public posts can be copied, screenshotted, indexed, or redistributed even if you later delete them.
- Consider what you would do if you lost access to the account; do not keep the only copy of important work or memories on the platform.
Is RedNote safe to use?
There is no useful one-word answer. RedNote is distributed through the U.S. App Store and Google Play and offers ordinary social-network features, but it also involves user-generated content, messaging, location-related permissions, tracking identifiers, and a moderation environment shaped by Chinese law and platform governance. Whether it is an acceptable risk depends on what the user wants to share, how much privacy they require, and how comfortable they are with the platform’s speech and enforcement environment.

Anecdotal Google Play reviews include reports from users who said their accounts were flagged or frozen. Those reviews are individual reports, not a measured suspension rate, and they do not establish that account recovery is routinely difficult. They are nevertheless a reason to avoid relying on RedNote as the sole place for important content and to keep recovery information current.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is RedNote appropriate for children?
The U.S. iOS listing shows a 13+ rating and identifies user-generated content, messaging and chat, health or wellness topics, and potentially mature or suggestive themes among its controls or content descriptors. A rating is not a guarantee that every post is suitable for every teenager.
Parents and guardians should use device-level age, privacy, and messaging controls; discuss the risks of public posting and unknown contacts; and consider whether the child needs location, contacts, audio, or full-photo-library access. They should also explain that translated content can be misunderstood and that a stranger’s recommendation is not automatically reliable simply because it has many likes.
Should TikTok users switch to RedNote?
RedNote is worth trying as a complement or alternative if you enjoy lifestyle discovery, searchable recommendations, photo-led posts, travel and food content, product research, or cross-cultural interaction. It is a poorer one-for-one replacement if your main reason for using TikTok is its established English-language entertainment network, music and sound ecosystem, familiar editing tools, or a mature creator-business workflow.
| RedNote may be a good fit if you want… | Look elsewhere or use both if you need… |
|---|---|
| Searchable lifestyle advice and personal recommendations | A near-identical TikTok feed and creator community |
| Recipes, beauty, fashion, travel, home, study, and pet content | Established English-language reach for every type of creator |
| Photo-and-text guides as well as short video | TikTok’s particular music, sound, and editing culture |
| Exposure to Chinese-language communities and perspectives | Predictable English translation across every post and comment |
| Product discovery and shopping-related content | Guaranteed U.S. access to every shopping, live-commerce, or creator feature |
Creators should also avoid assuming that a formal U.S. creator fund, affiliate program, or other monetization route is available. The available research does not establish current U.S. eligibility, terms, or an application process. RedNote supports publishing and commercial content, but that is not the same as a verified, accessible monetization program for every American account.
What RedNote is—and is not
- It is a Chinese lifestyle social platform with visual posts, short video, search, recommendations, messaging, live content, and shopping functions.
- It is also a place where users can find peer advice about food, travel, beauty, fashion, homes, study, fitness, pets, and products.
- It is not TikTok under a new name.
- It is not Douyin, China’s separate domestic short-video service.
- It is not an English-only network, even though English is listed as a supported app language.
- It is not proven to have retained the full January 2025 wave of U.S. downloads as active users.
- It is not automatically safe or automatically dangerous; the decision depends on privacy expectations, content sensitivity, and personal risk tolerance.
For a TikTok user, the best approach is to treat RedNote as a different community rather than a replacement clone. Install it from an official store, explore without oversharing, check translations and recommendations independently, and decide whether its lifestyle focus and platform rules suit you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is RedNote the same as Xiaohongshu?
RedNote is the English-facing name commonly used for Xiaohongshu (小红书), also translated as Little Red Book. XHS is a common abbreviation. It is a separate service from TikTok and Douyin.
Can I use RedNote if I do not speak Chinese?
Yes, English-speaking users can participate, but English coverage is incomplete. The app lists English as a supported language, while many posts, comments, and cultural references may still be in Chinese. Built-in or device translation can help, but it may miss slang and context.
Are TikTok refugees still using RedNote?
The January 2025 migration was driven by uncertainty over TikTok’s U.S. availability. RedNote briefly topped U.S. free-download charts, and Reuters reported more than 700,000 new users in an early measurement. Those figures do not prove that the same number remain active today.
Is RedNote safe to use?
RedNote is distributed through the U.S. App Store and Google Play, but safe use depends on your privacy and speech-environment expectations. Review location, contacts, photos, messaging, and tracking permissions, and remember that RedNote operates within China’s tightly controlled internet environment.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I switch from TikTok to RedNote?
It can be a useful complement or alternative for lifestyle recommendations, travel, food, beauty, fashion, home, and product discovery. It is not a guaranteed replacement for TikTok’s English-language entertainment network, music and sound culture, editing workflow, or creator economy.
The Bottom Line
RedNote is Xiaohongshu, a Chinese lifestyle-and-shopping social network that attracted a wave of so-called TikTok refugees in January 2025. It is best understood as a recommendation-heavy mix of Instagram, Pinterest, short video, and social commerce—not as a direct TikTok substitute. Its language friction, China-specific moderation environment, and privacy disclosures are important parts of the decision to use it.
