That headline captured the novelty of the project but could easily give the wrong impression. Southern did not simply ask a machine to create an album and publish the unedited results. She used AI-generated musical material as part of a collaborative production workflow. In the case of “Break Free,” for example, she rearranged material generated by Amper.
Amper co-founder Drew Silverstein described the technology as being designed for collaboration between humans and AI. That distinction matters: the software could generate musical ideas and instrumental arrangements, but a person still directed the creative parameters, selected useful results, shaped the songs, and completed the recordings.
Was I AM AI really the first AI-composed album?
It is more accurate to call I AM AI one of the earliest and most prominent albums by a solo artist composed and produced with AI than to call it the first album ever made by a machine.
The word “first” can refer to several different achievements:
- the first song to include AI-generated musical material;
- the first album to use AI assistance;
- the first album by a solo artist to use AI for composition and production;
- or the first album composed and produced autonomously, without meaningful human creative decisions.
Those are not interchangeable claims. Earlier and parallel projects complicate any absolute “first ever” statement. Sony CSL’s Flow Machines project, for example, was reported before I AM AI as an AI-assisted pop-album effort. The later Hello World project also described itself as an album composed with AI assistance.
There is therefore no good basis for saying that Southern’s album was the first music ever composed by AI, or that a machine independently created every part of it. The defensible historical claim is narrower: I AM AI was an early, highly visible full-length project centered on AI-assisted composition and production by a solo artist.
How much of the album was made by AI?
The album’s production credits separate the AI-generated instrumental compositions from the human elements. Southern’s own account says she used IBM Watson Beat, Amper, AIVA, and Google Magenta. The systems did not all perform the same role, and different tracks used different combinations of tools.

According to the album’s production description:
- AI systems generated musical compositions or instrumental material.
- When Amper was used, it could also generate instrumentation.
- Southern arranged the compositions.
- Southern wrote the vocal melodies and lyrics.
- Southern performed the vocals.
- Ethan Carlson handled vocal production, mixing, and mastering.
This makes I AM AI better understood as AI-generated instrumental material within a human-directed production. The distinction is especially important when discussing authorship and copyright. The software’s contribution was not the same as writing the lyrics, inventing the vocal line, singing the song, arranging the final structure, or mixing the finished recording.

Southern’s album page identifies four principal technologies used during the project: IBM Watson Beat, Amper, AIVA, and Google Magenta. The album was not made with one single all-purpose AI system.
Amper
Amper was the most prominent tool associated with the project. Its 2017 description presented it as an AI composer, performer, and producer. Users could direct musical characteristics such as mood, tempo, instrumentation, and duration, then work with the resulting material.
That workflow suggests constrained generation rather than independent musicianship. A human supplied the musical direction, evaluated the outputs, and decided what belonged in the song. Amper was associated with “Break Free,” “New World,” “Alive,” “Life Support,” “Time,” and “Voices.”
IBM Watson Beat
Watson Beat was used alongside Amper on “New World” and “Alive.” In the context of I AM AI, it was one of the systems Southern used to generate compositional material that could then be arranged and developed into a finished song.

AIVA
“Lovesick” was composed with AIVA. AIVA is significant to the album’s story because it remains an active AI-composition platform, although the current service should not be confused with the version or workflow used for Southern’s 2017–2018 project.
Google Magenta and NSynth
Southern also identifies Google Magenta as one of the technologies used in creating the album. “Voices” was composed with Amper and included sounds from NSynth, a Magenta-related neural audio technology. This illustrates the experimental character of the record: the production combined different AI research and music-generation tools rather than treating “AI” as a single instrument.

The album’s themes examine the future relationship between people and machines. Its songs address identity, technological dependence, and whether humans are prepared for machine-assisted creativity. Those themes make the production method part of the work’s subject: the album was not only about AI, but also an experiment in what happens when a human artist shares parts of the compositional process with software.
Who actually composed and produced the music?
The answer depends on which layer of the recording is being discussed.
The AI systems contributed: compositional and instrumental material, with Amper also supplying generated instrumentation on some tracks.
Southern contributed: creative direction, arrangement, lyrics, vocal melodies, vocal performance, and the decisions that determined how the generated material became songs.
Ethan Carlson contributed: vocal production, mixing, and mastering.

The AI systems were important creative tools, but the finished album depended on human interpretation and conventional studio work. It is also misleading to say that Southern had no role in composing or producing the record. Her role was central even though software generated some of the underlying musical material.

Southern’s process involved directing musical parameters, working with generated material, arranging it, writing and recording vocals, and completing a conventional production. That is different from entering a text prompt and receiving a finished vocal song in one step.
Modern platforms demonstrate how rapidly the category has developed:
- AIVA currently advertises AI composition across more than 250 styles and offers different rights arrangements across its free, standard, and pro plans.
- Suno advertises text-directed song generation, editing, uploads, and stem separation. Its paid plans distinguish themselves from the free tier by offering commercial-use rights for new songs under specified terms.
- Udio advertises text-to-music generation, editing, and subscription tiers.
These services provide useful context, but they are not the tools that made I AM AI. They also should not be treated as interchangeable from a legal or commercial perspective. AIVA’s current plan information says its free plan is non-commercial and assigns copyright to AIVA, while its pro plan provides user ownership and unrestricted monetization. Suno’s help documentation says free-plan songs are for non-commercial use, and its pricing information describes commercial-use rights for new songs on paid plans.
Terms, pricing, ownership language, and commercial permissions can change. Anyone using a current AI music service for a release, client work, advertising, or monetized video should read the live plan terms before generating or distributing the music. Why I AM AI still matters
The album’s lasting importance is not that it proves a machine can replace a songwriter. It shows an earlier version of a question that has since become central to music technology: which parts of making a song can be delegated to an algorithm, and what remains distinctly human?
Southern’s project placed that question inside a commercially released pop album. AI generated some of the musical foundation; a human artist selected, rearranged, interpreted, wrote, sang, and finished it. That combination makes I AM AI an early landmark in human-AI music collaboration—and a more interesting story than the simplified claim that an autonomous machine made an album by itself.
