If you mean Alex Garland’s Civil War (2024), the film is not newly arriving at home this month. It has been available for home viewing since 2024. In the latest U.S. availability snapshot used for this guide—checked July 28, 2026—you could watch it free with ads on several services, or rent and buy it through major digital storefronts. A Blu-ray/DVD/Digital edition is also available.
This is Garland’s near-future war thriller about journalists crossing a fractured United States toward Washington, D.C.—not Ken Burns’s historical documentary series The Civil War (1990), and not Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Can you stream Civil War with a subscription?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Civil War would stream exclusively on Max in the United States beginning September 13, 2024. That confirms the film had a Max subscription-streaming window, but it does not prove that Max still carries the movie in August 2026. The more recent catalog snapshot used here listed free-with-ads and transactional options instead.
In other words, do not assume that a Max subscription currently includes the film. Check Max directly if you already subscribe, but use the current service listing or A24’s watch links to verify where it can actually be played now.

- Expect to rewatch it? Compare the digital purchase price with the physical combo edition. A purchase gives you access through the retailer’s account; a disc gives you a tangible copy but requires a compatible Blu-ray or DVD player.

What is Civil War about?
Written and directed by Alex Garland, Civil War imagines a near-future United States split by armed conflict. Kirsten Dunst plays photojournalist Lee Smith, who travels with fellow journalists—including Cailee Spaeny’s aspiring photographer, Jessie—through a country being torn apart. Their destination is Washington, D.C., where they hope to document the conflict as opposing forces approach the capital.

The film’s central perspective is that of war correspondents rather than soldiers or political leaders. That makes it a tense road movie and journalism-focused war thriller, not an explanation of the actual American Civil War of 1861–1865. A24 describes it as an adrenaline-driven journey through a fractured America, while the Associated Press coverage frames the story around journalists attempting to record the fighting while traveling toward Washington.
The principal cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman. The film was released theatrically in the United States on April 12, 2024, and its digital/home-video release followed in 2024—not this month.

- Civil War (2024): Alex Garland’s fictional A24 thriller, starring Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny.
- The Civil War (1990): Ken Burns’s documentary miniseries about the 1861–1865 American Civil War. PBS maintains separate information and availability for that series.
- Captain America: Civil War (2016): the Marvel superhero film, a different title and production.
The quickest checks are the year, director, cast, and runtime. The 2024 film is the 109-minute Alex Garland production; it is not a historical documentary.

In the latest U.S. check, the least expensive paths were free-with-ads services, while Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Fandango at Home, and Spectrum On Demand provided rental or purchase routes. The Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo is the better fit for viewers who want a permanent physical copy. Check the current storefront listing before choosing, especially if you are looking for a subscription stream rather than a rental or purchase.
